For curls that hold as well as your hair allows, start with detangled hair that is about 80–90% dry, let the FlexStyle’s Auto-Wrap Curler catch a small section, then hold it with heat for 10 seconds and Cool Shot for 10 seconds. Turn the unit off before sliding the barrel down to release the curl. Shark recommends this technique to help curls last longer, but does not publish a guaranteed wear time.
Before you start: prepare your hair and attachments
Use the FlexStyle Auto-Wrap Curlers, not a different styling attachment. The two 1.25-inch barrels create opposite curl directions. Shark’s US product pages list these curlers with FlexStyle HD430 and HD435 systems; check your system’s included attachments and model compatibility before buying a separate accessory. Detangle your hair and let it dry until it is slightly damp, roughly 80–90% dry. Shark’s guidance says hair that is too wet is harder to curl. Treat this range as a starting point: the manufacturer also suggests trying a different moisture level to see what works for your hair. Separate the top and bottom portions so you can work through manageable sections.
How to curl each section with the Auto-Wrap Curler
- Choose a barrel for the curl direction. Select the left- or right-direction barrel for the side of your head you are styling. The barrels create opposite directions; follow the arrow on the barrel to orient the ends.
- Take a small section. Hold it near the middle and position at least 10 cm of the ends alongside the barrel arrow. Smaller sections are easier for the airflow to catch and wrap. If the hair will not wrap cleanly, reduce the section size.
- Let airflow wrap the hair. Hold the wand upright with the section in front of it, then switch it on. Guide the ends toward the barrel so the airflow catches them; move the wand toward your head as the section wraps around. Shark calls this automatic wrapping Coanda Technology. Avoid winding the hair around the barrel by hand.
- Apply heat, then Cool Shot. With the section wrapped, hold it in place for 10 seconds. Then press and hold Cool Shot for 10 seconds while the hair remains wrapped. Shark’s FAQ recommends high airflow and high heat for the Auto-Wrap Curlers.
- Switch off and release. Turn the unit off before pulling the barrel straight down. Let the curl fall free rather than tugging it off the barrel.
Repeat with the remaining sections, alternating barrels where you want curls to face in opposite directions.

What helps curls last longer?
Keep the Cool Shot step in the routine: Shark says it helps set the shape, and its styling guide says it allows for longer-lasting curls. After releasing a curl, you can use setting or holding spray if you want; Shark presents spray as optional, not required. The guide does not specify a particular product or promise a set number of hours, and it does not establish which moisture level or section size will last longest for every hair type.
Shark also describes the FlexStyle as measuring or regulating temperature 1,000 times per second on its product pages. That is a manufacturer specification, not proof that heat damage is impossible.

Quick fixes if wrapping or setting is difficult
- The ends do not catch: Reposition at least 10 cm of ends beside the arrow, make the section smaller, and hold the wand upright with the hair in front.
- The section will not wrap smoothly: Check that the hair is detangled and not too wet; try a smaller section before changing the recommended starting moisture level.
- The curl falls before you finish: Keep the section wrapped for the full 10 seconds of heat and 10 seconds of Cool Shot, then switch the unit off before releasing it.
