Use netstat to inspect connections, listening ports, and network counters—not to capture packet contents or display a live bandwidth graph. The right command depends on your operating system: on Windows, netstat -ano is a useful starting point for connections and process IDs; on Linux, netstat -ant lists numeric TCP sockets, while ss is often the better choice for busy servers.

What netstat can—and cannot—show

netstat provides a snapshot of socket and network state, or repeats that view at intervals. Depending on the operating system and options, it can show active TCP connections, listening ports, process IDs, interface counters, protocol statistics, and routing information. Microsoft documents those capabilities for its Windows command; Linux offers separate modes for connections, routes, interfaces, and protocol statistics.

It does not show packet payloads. Nor does one cumulative byte-counter reading tell you a transfer rate. To estimate activity from counters, compare readings taken over a known interval; the difference is the amount counted during that interval.

Choose a command by operating system and question

Need Windows Linux
Inspect connections and listeners netstat -ano netstat -ant for numeric TCP sockets; add -l to show listeners, or use -a for all sockets
Identify a process netstat -ano shows PIDs; netstat -b attempts to show executables netstat -p attempts to show PID/program where permitted
Check interface counters netstat -e netstat -i
View protocol statistics netstat -s netstat -s
Repeat output netstat -o 5 refreshes active connections and PIDs every five seconds netstat -c continuously redisplays the selected output once per second

Options are not portable between Windows and Linux. On Windows, check the syntax supported by the installed version with netstat /?. Linux options here follow the net-tools manual; availability and installed behavior can vary by distribution and package.

Windows: inspect connections, ports, and traffic counters

List connections and listening ports with process IDs

  1. Open Command Prompt or PowerShell.

  2. Run netstat -ano. The -a option includes active TCP connections and TCP/UDP listeners, -n keeps addresses and ports numeric, and -o adds the owning process ID.

  3. To identify a PID, open Task Manager and match the number to a process. Microsoft documents this PID-based workflow. A PID identifies a process, not necessarily a descriptive application name.

    • Supports IPv4/IPv6 pack Checksum Offload Engine (COE) to reduce Cental Processing Unit (CPU) loading
    • Compatible with Windows 8.1 or higher, Mac OS

Show the executable associated with a connection

Run netstat -b to attempt to display the executable involved in a connection or listener. Microsoft notes that this can be slow and requires sufficient permissions. If it does not show the expected program, try an elevated terminal or use -ano and map the PID in Task Manager.

Check Ethernet and protocol counters

  • netstat -e displays Ethernet bytes and packets sent and received.
  • netstat -s displays statistics grouped by protocol.

These are counters, not a bandwidth display. A single value is cumulative; compare successive readings over a measured interval to see how much the count changed.

Refresh the connection view

Run netstat -o 5 to refresh active connections and process IDs every five seconds. Press Ctrl+C to stop. Microsoft documents the interval form as repeating output until interrupted.

Linux: inspect sockets and interface statistics

List TCP sockets and listeners

Run netstat -ant to list numeric TCP sockets. Linux netstat omits listening sockets by default unless you request them: use netstat -l for listeners or netstat -a to include all sockets. Numeric output avoids resolving addresses and service names into labels.

Read queue columns in context

Linux netstat output can include Recv-Q and Send-Q. For an established socket, the manual defines the receive queue as bytes not copied by the user program and the send queue as bytes not acknowledged by the remote host. Listening sockets have different queue meanings. These fields are not direct bandwidth measurements; interpret them according to the socket state and the manual’s definitions.

When to use ss instead on Linux

The Linux netstat manual recommends using the netlink-based ss command when a server has many connections and connection counts are low. The ss manual describes it as a socket-statistics tool that provides information similar to netstat. Start with ss -t to inspect TCP sockets, then consult the ss(8) manual for filtering options and output semantics.

For the documented netstat options and Linux queue definitions, see the Linux netstat(8) manual. For Windows syntax and option behavior, see Microsoft’s netstat reference, which lists Windows 10, Windows 11, and Windows Server releases among its applicable versions.
