What the Jules extension does
Google announced the extension on October 29, 2025. It connects two different work modes: Gemini CLI is the active terminal collaborator, while Jules takes selected tasks and works in the background. Google describes Jules as running in a virtual machine where it clones code, installs dependencies, and modifies files.
The extension is part of Gemini CLI’s broader extension system. Google describes extensions as integrations that package instructions and tools for the CLI; they can be installed from GitHub URLs or local paths. Jules adds a route for Gemini CLI to delegate work to a separate asynchronous agent rather than replacing the terminal workflow. Google’s Gemini CLI extensions overview explains the ecosystem, and Google’s announcement describes the Jules handoff.
What you need to install it
- Gemini CLI version 0.4.0 or newer, according to Google’s announcement and the extension README.
- A Jules account.
- A GitHub repository connected in the Jules console.
These are the documented requirements; account access and compatibility can change over time.

Install from the extension repository
Run the command documented in the Jules extension README:

The README says --auto-update is optional. The command installs the extension from its GitHub repository; the provided materials do not establish that it has been tested in every environment.
Delegate a task
Use /jules in Gemini CLI to hand off a selected task. The README documents examples such as bug fixes, refactoring, dependency version updates, and documentation maintenance. Give the task enough context to identify the relevant repository and desired change, then continue other work in Gemini CLI while Jules proceeds asynchronously.

Check progress and review the result
Use /jules to ask about task status. For completed changes, Jules can submit its work to a new GitHub branch. Inspect the branch and review the code before merging or otherwise treating the change as accepted—particularly for security-sensitive fixes.
Examples of work to delegate
The extension README lists routine maintenance tasks such as fixing bugs, refactoring, updating dependency versions, and maintaining documentation. Google Cloud also demonstrates delegating multiple GitHub issues in parallel, asking Jules to investigate and fix security findings on a branch, and using observability data to investigate a crash and add a unit test. These are Google’s examples, not independently measured evidence of speed, quality, or success rates.

This division makes the extension useful when a task can be handed off without interrupting active terminal work. The available official materials do not provide a performance benchmark or a basis for ranking Jules against other coding agents.

As of October 4, 2026, the Gemini CLI changelog lists the Jules extension in its v0.11.0 entry and again under v0.61.0, dated September 23, 2026. The extension README remains publicly available with installation guidance and task examples. Those listings show that official project materials continue to document the extension; they do not guarantee compatibility in a particular environment or confirm that every user can access Jules. Check the Gemini CLI changelog and the extension README for the latest project information.
