This guide is for iPads with a physical Home button. Press it once to return to the Home Screen, double-click it to open the App Switcher, or press it together with the top button to take a screenshot. If your iPad has no Home button, its controls differ; Apple outlines the model-specific buttons in its iPad button guide.
What the iPad Home button does
The Home button is the round physical button below the display. Its action depends on how you use it:
- Press once: Return to the Home Screen from an app or another screen.
- Press and hold: Activate Siri. Holding the button is not the way to open the App Switcher.
- Use Touch ID: On supported models, the sensor in the button can unlock the iPad or authenticate purchases. Apple Support puts it this way: “Use the Home button to unlock your iPad or make purchases using Touch ID.”

Open the App Switcher with a double-click
To see recently used apps, double-click the Home button. The App Switcher displays your open apps; tap an app’s preview to return to it. Apple’s iPad gesture guide describes this as the Home-button method for switching apps.

If VoiceOver is on
Double-click the Home button, then swipe left or right to move through the apps. When the app you want is selected, double-tap it to open it. These steps are described in Apple’s VoiceOver instructions for iPadOS 27.
Switch between apps without opening the App Switcher
For a direct jump to another open app, swipe left or right along the bottom edge of the screen, using a slight arc. This is an alternative to double-clicking Home and choosing an app in the switcher. Apple documents the gesture for Home-button iPads in its iPad navigation gestures guide.

Take a screenshot
- Find the content you want to capture.
- Quickly press and release the Home button and the top button at the same time. For this Home-button model, use the top button—not a volume button.
- Tap the screenshot thumbnail if you want to edit or share it. If you leave the thumbnail alone, the screenshot is saved in Photos.

Set up a triple-click accessibility shortcut
A triple-click of Home can activate an Accessibility Shortcut, provided you first choose the accessibility feature or features for that shortcut in Settings. Apple lists the triple-click action and other Home-button gestures in its gesture guide. The available shortcut features depend on what you enable on your iPad.

Use onscreen controls instead of the physical button
If pressing the button is difficult or you prefer onscreen controls, turn on AssistiveTouch: go to Settings > Accessibility > Touch > AssistiveTouch. AssistiveTouch provides an onscreen menu with alternatives for actions such as Home, App Switcher, and screenshots. Apple explains its controls in the AssistiveTouch guide.
