Microsoft Edge’s Find on page feature searches the current tab so you can locate a word or phrase without scanning the page manually. Press Ctrl+F on Windows or Command+F on macOS to open it; use the next- and previous-result shortcuts to move through matches.
One important distinction: Ctrl+G and Command+G navigate to the next result after Find on Page is open. They do not open the search box.
Open Find on Page in Microsoft Edge
| Platform | Open Find on Page | Next result | Previous result |
|---|---|---|---|
| Windows | Ctrl+F | Ctrl+G | Ctrl+Shift+G |
| macOS | Command+F | Command+G | Command+Shift+G |
Press the shortcut while the tab with the content you want is active, then enter a word or phrase. These shortcuts are documented for Edge on Windows and Mac.
Search efficiently instead of typing a whole sentence
Start with a distinctive word or short phrase. For example, when looking through a troubleshooting page for instructions about clearing stored data, search for cache rather than pasting an entire sentence.

- Open the page or PDF in Edge.
- Press Ctrl+F on Windows or Command+F on macOS.
- Type a word, number, product name, or short phrase.
- Review the matches shown in the page.
- Use the next- and previous-result shortcuts to move through matches.
For technical pages, try identifying details such as an error code, command name, file extension, version number, or menu label. Searching for PowerShell or .csv, for instance, can be more targeted than a general term such as problem.
Move through matches with the correct shortcut
Once Find on Page is open, use the navigation shortcuts to move through results:
- Windows: Ctrl+G goes to the next result; Ctrl+Shift+G goes to the previous result.
- macOS: Command+G goes to the next result; Command+Shift+G goes to the previous result.
Microsoft documents Windows F3 as Find in the current tab. To open Find on Page, use the documented Ctrl+F shortcut. See Microsoft’s Edge keyboard shortcuts.
Use Find on Page with PDFs
In Edge’s built-in PDF viewer, use the same general Find on Page shortcuts: Ctrl+F on Windows or Command+F on macOS. Search for a heading, model number, regulation number, or phrase, then read the surrounding text to confirm the context.

Protected PDFs
Microsoft documents built-in Edge support for protected PDFs beginning with Edge version 83.0.478.37. To check your installed version, select Settings and more, then Settings, and open About Microsoft Edge. See Microsoft’s guidance on viewing protected PDFs in Edge and checking your Edge version.
Some older protection formats may prevent a protected PDF from opening in Edge. Microsoft gives some SharePoint IRM-protected PDFs as an example. This is a document-opening limitation, not evidence that Find on Page itself is failing.
When Find on Page does not locate text
A missing match does not necessarily mean the term is absent. The official documentation cited here describes how to open Find on Page and navigate its results, but does not establish how the feature handles every type of rendered or embedded content. Avoid assuming that visible text in an image, scan, canvas, frame, or collapsed section will be searchable.

Try these checks:
- Wait for the page or document to finish loading.
- Expand the relevant section if the page has collapsible content.
- Search for a shorter, distinctive part of the phrase.
- Try a visible heading, number, or code from the same section.
- Reload the page if its content appeared after an error or incomplete load.
- If the document is a scan or image, use an OCR workflow rather than assuming the visible letters are searchable text in Edge.
Use the Edge menu when you need settings
Microsoft’s shortcut documentation identifies the feature as find on page and documents keyboard commands, but does not provide a command-line syntax, URL scheme, or Edge setting for invoking it. The documented way to open it on Windows and macOS is the keyboard shortcut.
Microsoft calls the upper-right menu Settings and more. To inspect Edge configuration, select Settings and more, then Settings. The consulted documentation does not confirm a menu path such as Settings and more > Find on page. See Microsoft’s guide to finding settings and tools in Edge.
A fast workflow for research and troubleshooting
- Press Ctrl+F or Command+F.
- Search first for the exact error code, command, or product identifier.
- Use the next-result shortcut to inspect matches.
- Try a broader related word if the exact search is not useful.
- Search for a heading or version number to locate a relevant section.
- Read the surrounding text before acting on an isolated match.
For example, on a support page about a failed installation, search first for the error code. If that is not useful, try a related term such as install, repair, or requirements.
What Edge documents—and what it does not
Microsoft’s current shortcut page applies to Edge for Windows and Edge for Mac. It does not list a separate Find on Page shortcut for Linux, Android, or iOS, so do not treat the shortcuts above as officially documented commands for those platforms.

Can I use Find on Page in an Edge PDF?
Yes. Edge’s built-in PDF viewer uses the general Windows and Mac Find on Page shortcuts. Protected PDFs can have separate opening limitations, particularly when they use older protection formats.
Why did Edge fail to find text that is visible?
The consulted official material does not establish how Find on Page handles every type of content. Try waiting for the page to load, expanding relevant sections, and searching for a shorter visible term. For scans or images, an OCR workflow may be needed.
The Bottom Line
Use Ctrl+F on Windows or Command+F on macOS to open Find on Page. Search for a distinctive word, error code, heading, or number, then use the platform’s next- and previous-result shortcuts to move through matches. In PDFs, the same search shortcuts apply, but protected documents can have separate opening limitations.
