On the Dyson Supersonic Nural, press the button on top of the clear circular end-cap to toggle Scalp protect on or off. To use Attachment learning, turn Scalp protect off first: Dyson documents these as separate behaviors, and Attachment learning requires Scalp protect to be deactivated.
What Scalp protect does
Scalp protect uses a Time of Flight sensor to continually measure the distance between the dryer and your hair. As you move the dryer closer, it automatically reduces heat. Dyson describes the mode as intended for comfortable, up-close drying; it is not a manual temperature selection, and the mode can override custom heat settings. Dyson’s product information names the Gentle air attachment and Styling concentrator as compatible with Scalp protect.
How to switch Scalp protect on or off
- Find the Scalp protect button on top of the clear, circular end-cap.
- Press the button to toggle the mode. Dyson’s US owner support guide says the capsule illumination turns off when Scalp protect is deactivated while compatible attachments are connected.
- Watch the capsule indicator as you use the dryer. In Scalp protect mode, heat and capsule color adapt; the color is not a fixed setting you select manually.
Dyson’s manual maps the heat indicators as high/red, medium/orange, low/yellow, and no heat/blue. These colors indicate the heat level; in Scalp protect mode, the level changes in response to distance. See the Dyson Supersonic Nural user manual.
How to use Attachment learning
- Deactivate Scalp protect using the button on the clear end-cap.
- Connect an intelligent Nural styling attachment.
- Let the dryer recognize the attachment. Dyson says a Hall sensor reads the attachment’s unique magnetic ID.
- Use the attachment’s recommended heat and airflow settings, or customize them. The dryer remembers the settings from its last use with that attachment and applies them when it is recognized again.
Attachment learning is for intelligent Nural styling attachments, not every attachment that can physically connect to the dryer. Dyson’s support instructions explicitly require Scalp protect to be deactivated for this feature.

- A new network of Nural sensors within the machine activate intelligent features automatically to optimize your styling routine.
- Scalp protect mode automatically adjusts air temperature to maintain an optimal target temperature of 130°F at the scalp for comfortable, close-up drying.²
- Attachment learning recognizes each attachment and remembers your styling preferences. New, intelligent attachments automatically adjust to your preferred airflow and heat settings for easier styling.³
- Pause detect knows when you’ve paused styling. When no motion is detected, the machine will automatically switch off the heater and reduce airflow. When it’s picked back up, it’s reactivated.
- Capsule illumination changes color to indicate what heat setting you are in, so you always know how much heat you’re using. Clear endcap lets you see Dyson’s pioneering technology at work.
Attachment compatibility and recommended settings
Dyson’s US support guide gives these recommended starting settings for intelligent attachments. The manual lists only the Gentle air attachment and Styling concentrator as compatible with Scalp protect among the attachments below.
| Attachment | Recommended heat and airflow | Scalp protect compatibility |
|---|---|---|
| Gentle air attachment | High heat, high airflow | Yes; named by Dyson as compatible |
| Styling concentrator | High heat, medium airflow | Yes; named by Dyson as compatible |
| Wide-tooth comb | High heat, high airflow | Not listed as compatible in the Dyson manual |
| Wave+Curl diffuser | Medium heat, medium airflow | Not listed as compatible in the Dyson manual |
| Flyaway attachment | Low heat, high airflow | Not listed as compatible in the Dyson manual |
Settings are recommendations, not fixed requirements: Dyson says Attachment learning settings can be customized. Previous Supersonic styling attachments generally fit the Nural, but Dyson identifies the Wide-tooth comb as an exception; older attachments do not support Attachment learning even when they fit.
