You can SSH into a remote server from an iPhone or Android phone with a mobile SSH client, the server’s address and port, a username, and an accepted authentication method. Install a client for your platform, confirm the server is reachable, verify its identity on first connection, and then open a remote shell. The exact app features and background behavior vary by client.

What you need before connecting

SSH connects a client on your phone to an SSH server running on the remote machine. Gather these details before opening the app:

  • Host: the server’s hostname or IP address.
  • Port: the port configured for SSH. Port 22 is the default documented by Mobile SSH, but use the server’s actual configured port if it differs. Mobile SSH documentation
  • Username: an account on the server that is permitted to connect.
  • Authentication: a password or, preferably where supported, a public/private key pair.
  • Network route: a way for the phone to reach the server, such as a reachable address, an appropriate VPN, or a jump host.

The server must be running SSH and configured to accept your account’s authentication method. A client cannot compensate for an unreachable server or an account the server does not permit.

Android

ConnectBot describes itself as an Android SSH client for remote shell access and file transfer. Mobile SSH also documents an Android client; its documentation describes Android 8.0+ support and USB/NFC FIDO2 security-key support for that client, subject to compatible server configuration. Those details are specific to Mobile SSH, not Android apps generally.

iPhone and iPad

Blink documents an SSH client for iOS, including key-handling and command examples. Mobile SSH documents iOS 16+ support, Ed25519 and ECDSA key support, and no hardware security-key authentication or agent forwarding in its iOS app. These are product-specific details that may change.

Mobile SSH’s documentation describes its Android build as a Google Play closed test and its iOS build as a public TestFlight beta. Check current store or TestFlight availability and requirements before relying on that app. When comparing clients, look for the features you actually need: supported key formats, host-key verification, session behavior when the phone sleeps, SFTP, tunnels, jump hosts, accessibility and external-keyboard controls. The cited materials do not establish a universal best app or comparative usability results.

Connect to the server

  1. Install a client that is currently available for your phone’s operating system.
  2. Confirm reachability. Make sure the server accepts SSH and that your phone has a network route to it. If access requires a VPN or jump host, establish or configure that route first.
  3. Create a connection profile or start a new connection. Enter the hostname or IP address, the configured SSH port, and your username. Enter a password only if the server expects password authentication.
  4. Authenticate with a key when appropriate. Create or import a key pair using a method supported by your client and server. Keep the private key on your phone and install the corresponding public key on the server account. Blink documents a `ssh-copy-id identity_file user@host` flow; its example `ssh user@1.2.3.4` illustrates command-line syntax, not an interface every graphical client provides. Blink documentation
  5. Check the server’s identity on first connection. If the client presents a host-key fingerprint, compare it with a fingerprint obtained through a trusted channel before accepting it. Mobile SSH documents SHA-256 fingerprint comparison and checking server identity before sending credentials. Mobile SSH documentation
  6. Stop if a known server’s host key unexpectedly changes. Do not blindly delete the saved identity or accept the new key. Confirm the change with the server administrator or through another trusted channel; an unexpected change could indicate a legitimate server replacement, a configuration change, or an interception risk.
  7. Open the shell and run commands appropriate to the account and task. Use an account with the privileges needed for the work rather than assuming every phone connection should log in as root.

Keep work manageable when the phone sleeps or changes networks

A phone may lock, suspend background activity, or move between networks. A regular SSH connection is not guaranteed to stay uninterrupted through those changes. Blink notes that iOS power management can affect long-running connections. Mobile SSH describes Eternal Terminal as a transport intended to survive network drops, sleep, and IP changes when it is also set up on the host; that behavior depends on the implementation and server setup, not on every SSH app. Blink documentation · Mobile SSH documentation

For work you need to leave running on the server, consider using a server-side terminal multiplexer such as tmux. It can keep a shell session running on the server independently of the phone’s connection. Reconnecting to SSH does not mean every client automatically resumes the same session; you may need to reconnect to the multiplexer explicitly.

Optional capabilities: SFTP, tunnels and jump hosts

These features are useful for particular tasks, but support varies by client. OpenSSH lists SFTP and encrypted TCP/IP port forwarding among its features. OpenSSH features

  • SFTP: transfer files using the SSH-based file-transfer protocol, if the client includes an SFTP interface.
  • Local tunnel: forward a local port through SSH to reach a service on the remote side. Blink gives `ssh -L 8080:localhost:8080 host` as an example.
  • Jump host: connect through an intermediate host when the target server is not directly reachable. Blink gives `ssh -J jumphost host` as a pattern.

The commands are Blink examples for clients with a compatible command interface; they are not guaranteed to work as written in every graphical app. Blink documentation

Use agent forwarding only when you trust the remote server

Agent forwarding is not required for a basic phone-to-server login. OpenSSH describes an agent as keeping keys locally while allowing a remote machine to request authentication. However, Blink warns that software running on the remote server may use a forwarded agent for unintended or malicious purposes. Forward an agent only when you need it and trust the host; consider a separate, limited-purpose key rather than exposing access to a broadly useful identity. OpenSSH features · Blink documentation

Optional Android security-key authentication

Mobile SSH documents USB/NFC FIDO2 security-key support for its Android client. This is an optional authentication path, not a requirement for SSH, and it depends on the phone, client, and server being compatible. The same documentation says its iOS app does not support that authentication path. Confirm connector or NFC compatibility and server configuration before choosing a key. Mobile SSH documentation
