Open Spotify’s web player in a supported browser, sign in, and choose music to play—no desktop app installation is needed to listen in a browser. If playback fails, update the browser, test a private window, and check for network or protected-content restrictions. On a computer, you can also create and manage playlists and use keyboard shortcuts for common controls.
Open Spotify in a browser
- Go to open.spotify.com in your browser and sign in to your Spotify account.
- Choose music using search or your library, then select a track to start playback.
- Use the playback controls in the player to pause, resume, or move through music. On a computer, the shortcuts below can speed up common actions.
Spotify describes the web player as browser-based playback. Its support page lists Chrome, Firefox, Edge, Opera, and Safari on desktop, with baseline widely available browser versions updated within the previous 30 months. That is not a guarantee for every browser build indefinitely. Spotify’s listed mobile minimums are Android 6.0 or later with Chrome 87+, Samsung Internet 17+, or Firefox 115+; on iOS, Chrome 87+ or Safari 15+. Requirements can change, so consult Spotify’s current compatibility information if your device or browser is not working.
Fix common web-player playback problems
If Spotify does not play in your browser, try these checks in order. Spotify recommends trying a desktop app if browser playback still does not work.
- Update the browser. Install the latest available update for your browser, then reopen Spotify.
- Test a private or incognito window. If playback works there, browser settings or extensions in your regular window may be interfering.
- Check the network. Public or shared networks, such as those at work, school, or a hotel, may restrict access to Spotify. Try another network if possible.
- Enable protected content if Spotify reports a protected-content error. In Chrome, check the site content settings for
open.spotify.com. In Firefox, check the DRM content settings. In Edge, a separate Media Feature Pack may be required on Windows 10 N editions; this qualification does not apply to every Edge installation. - Try the desktop app. If the browser steps do not resolve playback, Spotify suggests using its desktop app instead.

Use keyboard shortcuts to control playback
Spotify’s shortcut reference covers both the computer app and web player. Shortcuts can vary by operating system; if a combination does not work, open Spotify’s current shortcut list using the displayed shortcut-list combination on its keyboard shortcuts help page.

Spotify’s support page renders the Windows shuffle and repeat combinations as Ctrl/Cmd+S and Ctrl/Cmd+R, respectively. Check the live shortcut list if the displayed combination is unclear or differs from what works on your setup.

Create and edit a playlist on a computer
These instructions follow Spotify’s desktop workflow for the web player and computer interface.
Create a playlist
- Open Your Library.
- Select Create, then choose Playlist.
- Edit the playlist name and other details, then save.
You can also create a playlist with Cmd-N on Mac or Ctrl-N on Windows, according to Spotify’s playlist help page.

Add tracks
- Right-click a track, or open its three-dot menu, choose Add to Playlist, and select the playlist.
- Alternatively, drag a track into the playlist.
Reorder, remove, or delete
- To change track order, drag a track to the position you want.
- To remove a track, open its context menu and choose Remove from this Playlist.
- To delete the playlist, open the playlist’s context menu and choose its delete option.
Spotify may show recommended songs at the bottom of a playlist, based on what you have added and the playlist title.

The browser is a convenient way to listen without installing the computer app. If browser compatibility, network restrictions, or protected-content settings prevent playback after the checks above, Spotify recommends trying the desktop app. Spotify’s cited help pages document those troubleshooting paths but do not establish a broad feature-by-feature difference between the web player and desktop app.
