Windows 11 Snap layouts let you arrange open windows into predefined areas of the desktop instead of resizing each one by hand. You can place a browser beside a document, keep Teams above a notes app, or create a three-window workspace on a large monitor.
Snap layouts are built into Windows 11. You do not need a separate utility or command-line command. You can open the layout menu with the mouse, keyboard, or touch, although the layouts available depend on your display.
What are Snap layouts?
Snap layouts are predefined window arrangements in Windows 11. They divide the usable desktop into zones, such as two equal columns, a larger area beside a smaller column, or several stacked sections.
After you place the first window, Windows can show Snap Assist, which displays thumbnails of other open windows. Select a thumbnail to fill one of the remaining zones.

| Feature | What it does |
|---|---|
| Snap layouts | Offers predefined zones for arranging windows. |
| Snap Assist | Suggests other open windows for the remaining zones. |
| Snap groups | Exposes a multi-window arrangement for later switching or restoration. |
Use the Maximize button to open Snap layouts
- Open the applications you want to arrange.
- Activate the window you want to place first.
- Hover over its Maximize button in the upper-right corner of the title bar. If the window is already maximized, this may be the Restore button.
- Wait for the Snap flyout to appear.
- Move the pointer over the desired zone and click it.
- When Snap Assist appears, select another open window for the next zone.
- Continue selecting windows until the arrangement is complete, or leave a zone empty.
The number and shape of layouts are not identical on every PC. A large landscape monitor may offer arrangements suitable for three side-by-side windows, while a portrait display may offer top-and-bottom combinations.
Open Snap layouts with the keyboard
Press Windows + Z to open the Snap layouts menu for the active window. This shortcut opens the menu; it does not automatically choose a zone. Select a layout and then select a position within that layout.

- Click and hold the title bar of a window.
- Drag it toward the left or right edge of the screen to snap it to that side.
- Drag it toward a corner to place it in a quarter-screen zone.
- On Windows 11 version 22H2 or later, drag the window toward the top of the screen.
- When the Snap bar appears, move the pointer over a layout position and release the window in the chosen zone.
Windows may show a translucent preview before the pointer reaches the physical edge. This behavior is controlled by the option that allows snapping without dragging all the way to the edge.
Turn Snap layouts on or off
All Snap functionality is controlled from the Multitasking settings page.

- Turn the main Snap windows switch on or off.
- Expand Snap windows to manage individual behaviors.
Windows 11 provides these options:
| Setting | Purpose |
|---|---|
| When I snap a window, show what I can snap next to it | Turns Snap Assist suggestions on or off. |
| Show snap layouts when I hover over a window’s maximize button | Controls the Snap flyout on the title bar. |
| Show snap layouts when I drag a window to the top of my screen | Controls the top-of-screen Snap bar. |
| Show my snapped windows when I hover over the taskbar apps, in Task View, and when I press Alt + Tab | Controls how Snap groups are displayed in those locations. |
| When I drag a window, let me snap it without dragging all the way to the screen edge | Allows snapping before the pointer reaches the exact edge. |
Turning off the main switch disables Snap. Turning off an individual option disables only that entry point or behavior. For example, you can leave keyboard snapping available while hiding the layouts shown when you hover over a Maximize button.
Resize windows after snapping
Snapping does not lock the layout permanently. To resize adjacent snapped windows, move the pointer over the divider between them. When the resize cursor or separator bar appears, drag the divider.
Windows adjusts the neighboring snapped window at the same time, preserving the overall arrangement. This is useful when one application needs more space—for example, giving a spreadsheet two-thirds of the screen while keeping a browser in the remaining third.
Restore a Snap group
Snap groups are created automatically when multiple windows are snapped together. There is no separate command for naming or creating a group.

- Select the group thumbnail to restore the related windows together.
Windows can also expose the arrangement in Task View and Alt + Tab. If the group is not shown there, return to Start > Settings > System > Multitasking > Snap windows and enable Show my snapped windows when I hover over the taskbar apps, in Task View, and when I press Alt + Tab.
Why Snap layouts look different on different monitors
Windows adapts the available layouts to the current display. You may see different choices when you:
- Move a window between a laptop screen and a larger monitor.
- Rotate a display from landscape to portrait.
- Change display scaling.
- Change the resolution.
- Use a small panel that cannot comfortably accommodate several narrow windows.
Consequently, there is no guaranteed number of layouts on every Windows 11 computer. Avoid treating the commonly pictured menu as a fixed six-choice interface.
Fix common Snap layout problems
The Snap flyout does not appear
Some applications do not expose a standard Maximize caption button. Others use custom title bars or custom caption controls that Windows cannot identify as the maximize control. This is common with certain older desktop applications and custom-built software.

Try Windows + Z, or snap the window by dragging it to an edge. If those methods also fail, the application may not use a window structure that supports normal Windows snapping.
Snap Assist does not suggest other windows

The first window can still snap when this option is disabled; Windows simply stops showing the list of suggested windows for the remaining zones.
Dragging to the top does nothing
Top-of-screen dragging requires Windows 11 version 22H2 or later. On a supported version, check Start > Settings > System > Multitasking > Snap windows and enable Show snap layouts when I drag a window to the top of my screen.
An app will not fit the selected zone
Some applications declare a minimum window size that is larger than the zone you selected. Windows may display the layout, but the app will remain wider than the intended area or prevent neighboring windows from reaching the expected size.
Microsoft says applications should support a minimum width of no more than 500 effective pixels for common Snap compatibility, and recommends 330 effective pixels or less for broader compatibility. This is an application limitation rather than necessarily a Windows Snap failure. Look for a compact view, update the app, or choose a wider layout zone.
The layout changes on another display
This is expected behavior. Snap layouts are tailored to the display currently containing the window. Check the monitor’s resolution and scaling if the available choices changed unexpectedly, but different layouts between a laptop panel and an external monitor are normal.

Snap layouts, as they are presented in this guide, are a Windows 11 feature. Windows 10 also has basic window snapping, but support for Windows 10 ended on October 14, 2025. Microsoft no longer provides normal free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, or security fixes for Windows 10 after that date.

- Research and writing: Place a browser on one side and a word processor on the other.
- Video meetings: Keep a meeting window in one zone and notes or a presentation in another.
- Development: Use a wider zone for the code editor and narrower zones for documentation and a terminal.
- Monitoring: Arrange a dashboard, email client, and chat application on a large display.
- Comparison work: Snap two documents side by side and resize the divider as needed.
The Bottom Line
Use Windows + Z when you want to choose a complete arrangement, the arrow shortcuts for quick two-window work, and edge or top dragging when you prefer the mouse. If a layout is unavailable or an app refuses to fit, check the Multitasking settings first—but remember that display dimensions and the app’s own window-size rules also determine what Windows can do.
FAQ
What is the shortcut for Snap layouts in Windows 11?
Press Windows key + Z to open the Snap layouts menu. You must then select a layout and a zone. Windows key + Left Arrow or Windows key + Right Arrow directly snaps the active window to a side.
Why are some Snap layouts missing?
Windows changes the available layouts according to the display’s size, orientation, resolution, and scaling. A small laptop screen and a large landscape monitor may show different layouts.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsHow do I enable Snap Assist?
Go to Start > Settings > System > Multitasking, expand Snap windows, and enable When I snap a window, show what I can snap next to it.
Are Snap Assist and Snap groups the same thing?
No. Snap Assist suggests windows for the empty zones after you snap the first window. Snap groups are the multi-window arrangements Windows can show later from the taskbar, Task View, or Alt + Tab.
Can I use Snap layouts with every application?
Most applications support them, but some custom title bars, older desktop applications, and apps without a standard Maximize button may not show the Snap flyout. An app’s minimum window size can also prevent it from fitting a narrow zone.
Does Windows key + Z automatically snap the current window?
No. Windows key + Z opens the layout menu. You still need to choose a layout zone.
