Before recording with smart glasses, tell the people likely to be captured, ask where practicable, and respect a refusal. Keep the recording indicator unobstructed, avoid private or sensitive settings, follow venue rules and local law, and put safety ahead of using the camera or other features.
Before wearing smart glasses around other people
Ordinary-looking frames can make it hard for others to know whether a camera or microphone is active. Meta’s human-rights report on Ray-Ban Stories identified risks to bystanders and wearers, so do not assume people recognize your glasses or understand what they are doing: Meta’s Ray-Ban Stories human-rights assessment.
Learn the controls and check the setting
- Read the current manual for your exact model. Find out how photo, video, audio, and AI features start and stop, and review the companion app’s privacy settings. Behavior varies by model, generation, and software.
- Check the venue’s policy. If the rules are unclear or the setting is sensitive, ask the host, organizer, employer, or staff before wearing or using the glasses.
- For a private conversation, appointment, meeting, or gathering, consider wearing ordinary glasses instead. Even when you are not recording, an unobtrusive camera can leave people unsure.
How to ask before recording
- Say what you plan to do. Explain plainly that you want to take a photo, record video, capture audio, or use an AI feature, and why.
- Ask the people likely to be captured. This matters particularly during a conversation or in a close social setting, where people may be recorded unintentionally.
- Accept a no. Do not record someone who declines. If they are already in a clip, stop and discuss whether to delete or edit it before sharing.
- Keep the capture light visible. Do not cover, disable, or defeat a recording indicator. It is notice—not permission.
ConnectSafely advises against photographing, filming, or recording people’s audio without permission. Its guide describes a narrow exception concerning documentation of human-rights abuses and other horrific crimes; that exception is not a basis for recording in ordinary social situations. Where to take smart glasses off
Do not use the camera or microphone in places where recording would be inappropriate or intrusive. ConnectSafely names locker rooms, public bathrooms, doctors’ offices, pharmacy lines, and places of worship as examples. The same caution applies to other private or sensitive settings: put the glasses away rather than relying on others to notice a recording light.

What the recording indicator can—and cannot—tell people
Ray-Ban’s FAQ says the capture LED on Ray-Ban Meta glasses activates during photo or video capture to indicate to nearby people that the wearer may be recording. It distinguishes that front-facing capture LED from an inward-facing notification light and notes that first-generation glasses can behave differently during some AI features because of hardware limits. These are product-specific details, not a description of every smart-glasses model. See the Ray-Ban Meta FAQ.
Meta says its devices can prevent photo or video capture when the light is covered, and that intentionally covering the light goes against its guidelines. This describes Meta’s feature; do not assume other brands or software versions work the same way. See Meta’s responsible-innovation guidance.

Meta’s guidance states, “It’s important to respect the comfort and privacy of other people when using AI glasses.” A light may reduce uncertainty, but it cannot explain why you are recording, who will see the footage, or whether audio or AI features are active. Tell people what you are doing and ask where practicable; do not treat an indicator as consent.
Stay attentive while wearing them
Keep your attention on traffic, steps, sports, and the people you are with. ConnectSafely advises focusing first on the activity and safety during walks and sporting activities. Stop before operating controls whenever doing so would distract you, and stop using the camera if someone asks or the situation becomes more private than you expected.

Review a recording before sharing it
Taking a recording and publishing it are separate decisions. Before sharing, review the clip for people who did not agree to be included, children, private conversations, sensitive information, or location details that change its context. Consider narrowing the audience and removing material that is unnecessary or identifying. Permission to record should not be treated as automatic permission to publish.
Rules about storing, disclosing, or publishing recordings depend on location and context. For example, Singapore’s Ministry of Digital Development and Information says its Personal Data Protection Act (PDPA) generally does not require consent from people for photography or recording in public spaces, while organizations must ensure subsequent use or disclosure of personal data has a reasonable purpose and complies with applicable laws. Check local law and venue rules
There is no single rule that makes all public recording legal or requires consent for every recording. The answer can depend on the country or state, the setting, whether audio is captured, who is involved, and what happens to the recording afterward. Check current local law and venue policy, especially for audio, workplaces, sensitive settings, and later sharing.

- United Kingdom: A 2026 parliamentary written answer said people may lawfully use smart glasses and similar recording technologies in public spaces in line with freedom-of-expression rights. - California: The Associated Press reported on October 1, 2026, that Governor Gavin Newsom vetoed a bill that would have penalized specified non-consensual recordings in spaces generally considered private and required covered wearable devices to have an indication feature beginning in 2028. AP reported that Newsom objected that the definition of a wearable recording device was too broad and cited his statement that existing state law already barred certain recordings without consent in private spaces. This is a dated account of a bill outcome, not a general guide to California law: Associated Press report on the veto.
