To let your Pixel rotate its screen automatically, turn on Auto-rotate screen in Settings. Google describes Smart Autorotate, part of Android System Intelligence, as detecting the orientation in which you hold your phone. Google’s help material does not explain the feature’s face-detection method or guarantee that the screen will stay in portrait whenever you are looking at it.
What Smart Autorotate does—and what Google confirms
Google identifies Smart Autorotate as an Android System Intelligence feature that “Detects the orientation you hold your phone in.” That description supports the idea that the phone considers how it is held, but Google’s help material does not publish details of its computer-vision implementation. So, treat face detection as a possible part of the experience, not a guarantee that the screen will remain in portrait whenever your face is visible.
Google’s reviewed support information does not specify which Pixel models or Android versions expose face detection for auto-rotate. Check the settings on your own phone rather than assuming the option is available on every Pixel.
How to find and enable Auto-rotate screen
- Open Settings.
- Open Display & touch, or Display if that is the label on your software.
- Find Auto-rotate screen and turn it on. If the menu labels differ, use Settings search for “Auto-rotate.”
After enabling it, turn the phone to landscape or portrait and check whether the app you are using supports that orientation. The exact menu wording can vary by software version or locale.

Automatic rotation or the manual Rotate control?
| Choice | How it works | Best suited to |
|---|---|---|
| Auto-rotate on | The screen can change orientation as you turn the phone. | People who want orientation changes to happen without a tap. |
| Auto-rotate off, then tap Rotate | Turn the phone; when the corner Rotate control appears, tap it to rotate the screen. | People who want to avoid unwanted automatic changes and do not mind confirming rotation manually. |
Google documents the corner Rotate control as a way to rotate the screen while Auto-rotate is off. The control is a manual alternative, not a face-detection setting.
If Pixel auto-rotate is not working
- Check that Auto-rotate screen is enabled in Settings.
- Install any system update offered for your phone, then test rotation again.
- Test the phone in safe mode. Google says that if rotation works in safe mode, a downloaded app is most likely causing the problem.
