Before you start scanning
Keep the items you are buying together and make a clear space at the register for them and your personal belongings. This simple organization makes it easier to notice if an item is missing from the screen or does not belong to your purchase. Self-checkout layouts and prompts differ by store, so follow the instructions on the machine.
Scan and verify each item
- Pick up one item and scan it.
- Check the register screen. Make sure the displayed item and price match what you just scanned. Erie County Department of Consumer Protection advises shoppers to “Watch as the price of the item shows on the checkout register.” Georgia’s Attorney General also recommends watching the display and bringing discrepancies to an attendant’s attention: Georgia price-scanning guidance and Erie County scanner-accuracy guidance.
- Move the verified item to the bagging area. Then repeat with the next item. Keeping to one item at a time helps you compare what is in your hand with what the register has recorded.
If the scan fails, an unclear prompt appears, or the screen shows a different item, stop rather than guessing or scanning it again repeatedly. Ask the attendant to resolve the issue before continuing. ASDA’s Scan and Go terms direct customers with scanning difficulties to staff at the payment area; Walmart’s Scan & Go terms tell customers who cannot scan an item to consult an associate so the items are reflected in the cart or receipt. These are examples of retailer-specific processes, not universal self-checkout rules: ASDA Scan and Go terms and Walmart Scan & Go terms.
Follow the store’s workflow for produce
Loose produce may need a different process from packaged goods. Follow the machine’s instructions and do not guess at a code, weight, or count. ASDA says loose produce is generally weighed and labeled in the produce area at most stores, though some stores allow weighing at self-checkout. Walmart says certain produce prices may be estimates until weight or count is confirmed. Ask an attendant if you are unsure how the store expects you to enter an item; workflows vary by retailer and location.

Review the list before paying
Before you submit payment, inspect the on-screen item list and total. Check that each item is yours and that it appears once, with no expected item missing. If you spot an unfamiliar, repeated, or incorrect entry, call an attendant and have it corrected before paying. There is no universal technical safeguard established for preventing another shopper’s item from appearing in a transaction, so checking the display and asking staff to resolve discrepancies are practical safeguards—not a guarantee.
Check your receipt before leaving
After payment, compare the receipt with your items while you are still at the checkout lane. Georgia’s Attorney General recommends checking it before leaving the store, preferably before leaving the lane. Erie County advises keeping the receipt in case a question comes up later. If a charge is unclear, ask the attendant or customer service desk while you can show the receipt and the relevant item.

What to do about a scan or price error
Start with store staff or customer service. Show the receipt and, if the issue is a shelf-price mismatch, the shelf label or advertisement. Georgia’s Attorney General recommends bringing the store’s advertisement or pricing notes so the advertised price can be verified. If the store does not resolve the matter, consult consumer-protection or weights-and-measures guidance for the jurisdiction where that store is located; remedies are not uniform nationwide.
Do not assume a scanning error means you are automatically entitled to a free or discounted item. Florida’s Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services says its guidance does not require a business to provide an item free or at a discount for an incorrect scan, though a store may have its own policy: Florida price-scanner guidance. Connecticut describes a narrower rule with conditions: the item must be a qualifying consumer commodity, have been advertised for at least seven days, and the consumer must ask for it free: Connecticut scanned-price accuracy guidance. Erie County describes its own local process, including a possible super refund at qualifying stores; its rules should not be applied outside the county without checking local requirements.
