To use Screen Effects in Google Messages, send a message that matches one of Google’s hidden prompts. Google says the animation appears on both your screen and the recipient’s. Examples include “Happy Valentine’s Day,” “It’s snowing,” and “I love you.”
Send a message that triggers a Screen Effect
-
Open the conversation in Google Messages.
-
Type and send a phrase that Google identifies as a Screen Effects prompt. Its examples are “Happy Valentine’s Day,” “It’s snowing,” and “I love you.”
-
If the message matches a prompt, Google says an animation plays on both participants’ screens. Google’s Screen Effects help page describes the feature; its introductory page gives additional examples.
Which messages trigger Screen Effects?
Google describes hidden prompts and gives examples, but the help pages linked above do not provide a complete list. The introductory page says there are “15 or more” hidden messages, but it does not enumerate them. Treat the listed phrases as examples rather than a guaranteed or exhaustive inventory.

Turn off expressive animations
To disable these animations in Google Messages, tap your profile picture, open Messages settings, then turn off Show expressive animations. Google also documents a device-level option: Settings > Accessibility > Color and motion > Remove animations.
Screen Effects are different from Camera effects
Screen Effects are triggered by text. Camera effects are applied to images or videos before sending and are a separate feature. Google says Camera effects are available on Pixel 6 and later and Samsung Galaxy S20+ devices, and work with images and videos sent through RCS and MMS. To use one, open or start a conversation, tap the image capture control, choose Camera effects, select an effect, then send the image or video. Google’s stated device restriction applies to Camera effects; its reviewed help page does not give the same restriction for Screen Effects.
