Use Reddit for marketing by contributing where your audience already has relevant discussions, following each community’s rules, and being transparent about your connection to your business. Reddit Pro can help eligible businesses participate, while Reddit Ads can buy reach when a campaign calls for it. Neither makes unsolicited promotion welcome: a subreddit’s rules and its moderators’ decisions still matter.

How Reddit marketing works

Reddit marketing has two distinct paths: organic participation in communities and paid advertising. Organic activity is suited to answering questions, sharing useful material, and building familiarity in relevant discussions. Ads are a separate way to pay for distribution and choose from targeting and placement options available to a particular campaign. You can use either path, or both, but paid access does not override community rules.

Reddit’s own guidance says promotional content is not automatically spam, but communities vary: some prohibit promotion, and others set their own limits. Repeated unwanted or unsolicited promotion can be spam whether it is posted manually or automatically. The often-mentioned 10% self-promotion guideline is used by some communities, not a platform-wide allowance; Reddiquette also describes a 9:1 ratio as a common rule of thumb. Treat neither ratio as permission. Check the specific subreddit’s rules and norms before posting. Reddit’s spam guidance explains the distinction.

Find communities where your business is relevant

Start with the audience’s needs, not a list of places to drop links. Look for communities where people are already discussing the problem, interest, or category your business relates to. A community discussing a product category is not necessarily open to brand promotion.

  1. Search for communities connected to the audience’s interests or questions.
  2. Read each community’s description, rules, and posting requirements before joining a discussion.
  3. Review recent posts and comments to understand the community’s tone, recurring questions, and accepted formats.
  4. Decide whether you can contribute something useful without asking readers to buy, sign up, or click through.

Reddit’s sitewide rules apply across the platform, and moderators enforce additional rules in their own communities. If you are uncertain whether a post belongs, check the rules or ask moderators before submitting. Reddit’s rules overview describes this division of responsibility.

Build trust through useful, transparent participation

Answer relevant questions, share practical information, and make your role clear when you are discussing your employer, company, or product. A useful contribution should make sense in the discussion even if the reader never follows a link. If a mention or link is relevant and allowed, explain why it belongs rather than presenting it as an independent recommendation.

  • Do not post the same promotional link across unrelated discussions.
  • Do not send mass invitations or messages to recruit users into a community or campaign.
  • Do not use multiple accounts to make a business recommendation look independent.
  • Do not assume that a single promotional post is acceptable just because a ratio or rule of thumb is met.
  • If a community’s policy is unclear, contact its moderators politely before posting.

Reddit’s community-growth advice recommends precise descriptions, interactive content, relevant sharing, and thoughtful moderator outreach; it also warns against mass messages and repetitive links. See Reddit’s guidance on growing a community.

What Reddit Pro does—and does not do

Reddit Pro is a business-facing account and engagement option, not an exemption from Reddit’s rules or a shortcut to permission in a subreddit. Reddit says Pro accounts are subject to the same Reddit Rules as other user accounts. Businesses still need to identify themselves accurately, respect users’ privacy, and follow local community rules.

As described by Reddit’s signup guidance accessed October 7, 2026, applying requires a Reddit account with a verified email and a safe-for-work profile, plus business or organization details, a website, and a category; business size is optional. Reddit describes Pro as open to people who meet its eligibility requirements, but features and verification options can change. Check Reddit’s Reddit Pro signup page for current requirements.

When Reddit Ads may fit

Consider paid promotion when you have a defined campaign goal and want paid distribution rather than relying only on community participation. Reddit’s advertising materials describe several targeting signals, including communities, interests, keywords, locations, and custom audiences. Which options are available depends on campaign and ad type, and on the account setup. Community targeting can reach people who have joined or recently engaged with selected communities; keyword targeting can be behavioral in feeds or contextual in conversation placements. Confirm the options shown in your own account before planning around them.

Promoting an existing post is a specific flow, not a description of every Reddit Ads campaign. In the flow described by Reddit’s current help material, eligible users can promote their own eligible safe-for-work text, image, video, or link post from a profile or eligible public community; polls are not supported. Those promoted posts are reviewed under Reddit Ads Policy, use a traffic objective with cost-per-click billing, default to maximize clicks, use community targeting, appear in feeds, and support daily rather than lifetime budgets. If moderators remove the original post, the ad stops spending and the promoted post is removed. Check Reddit Ads Policy and the current promoted-post options before launching, since features can change.

Choose targeting, placement, and measurement around the goal

Audience signals and placements answer different questions. Community targeting is useful when selected communities reflect a relevant audience; interest targeting groups users by interests; keyword targeting uses relevant terms, with behavior or context depending on placement. Feed and conversation placements also reach people in different settings, and not every campaign type supports every combination. Compare the available settings in your account rather than assuming every option can be combined.

Decision What it signals What to verify
Community targeting People who joined or recently engaged with selected communities Whether those communities match the campaign audience and are available for the ad type
Interest targeting Users associated with selected interests Which interests and campaign formats are available in the account
Keyword targeting Relevant terms; targeting may be behavioral in feeds or contextual in conversation placement How keywords work in the selected placement and campaign type
Feed or conversation placement Different locations in which people encounter an ad Available placements, objective, and measurement for the chosen campaign

Set the objective and measurement plan before spending. Reddit’s Ads materials describe reporting for post, consideration, and conversion metrics and refer to additional measurement solutions. Choose measures that correspond to the campaign goal rather than treating a broad platform statistic as a forecast for an individual campaign. See Reddit’s advertising materials for current targeting, placement, and reporting details.

Reddit’s Conversation Ads page reports that 43% of Redditors spend time in conversation threads, attributed to Reddit Insights powered by Community Intelligence, Global, Q4 2025. The same page reports 83% higher brand awareness for campaigns that run feed and conversation ads together versus feed alone, attributed to Reddit Internal, Reddit Brand Lift, 6/17–8/17; the cited excerpt does not state the year. These are Reddit-published figures with limited attribution, not a guarantee or an independently established forecast for a particular advertiser. Reddit’s Conversation Ads page provides the figures and their stated attribution.

Run giveaways with clear rules and safeguards

Contests, sweepstakes, and lotteries carry responsibilities beyond ordinary posts. The organizer is responsible for applicable law and Reddit policies. Make official rules available, include the required release of Reddit from promotion-related liability, and clearly state that the promotion is not sponsored, endorsed, or associated with Reddit.
