Use Quick Assist only with someone you trust. The helper creates a six-digit code, but entering it does not give them control: you must separately allow screen sharing and, if needed, approve a request for full control. Never share a code or accept an unexpected support session prompted by a caller, message, or pop-up.

Before you start: use Quick Assist safely

Quick Assist is a remote connection. A helper can see your screen after you allow sharing, and can control your PC only if you approve a separate request. Microsoft describes the app as a way to get help with a computer problem from family or friends, or help them out (Microsoft Support: Quick Assist).

  • Start a session only with someone you know and trust.
  • Do not share a code, accept a connection, or grant control because an unexpected caller or pop-up tells you to. If you need Microsoft Support, initiate contact yourself through Microsoft’s official support channels.
  • Close private files and pages before sharing your screen. The helper may see anything displayed during the session.
  • You can stop full control with Cancel control. Either person can end the session by selecting Leave.

Microsoft says the Quick Assist web app is for use only with verified Microsoft support agents. Its macOS Quick Assist offering is also limited to Microsoft Support interactions, rather than general-purpose help between friends or family.

Install and open Quick Assist

Quick Assist is a Microsoft Store app and requires WebView2. Use the current Store app, which has a new icon, rather than an old shortcut.

#1 Best Overall
  1. Open Microsoft Store and search for Quick Assist.
  2. Select Get or Install, depending on the button shown.
  3. When installation finishes, open Start, search for Quick Assist, and launch the app. Microsoft’s documented shortcut is Ctrl+Windows logo key+Q.

How to use Quick Assist as the helper

  1. Open Quick Assist and select Help someone.
  2. Give the recipient the six-digit code shown in the app. Send it only to the person you intend to help; the code is for starting the session, not a reason to bypass the recipient’s approval.
  3. Wait while the recipient enters the code and allows the connection and screen sharing.
  4. Use the available tools, such as chat, annotation, or the laser pointer, to guide the recipient without taking control.
  5. If you need to operate the PC, select Request control. Wait for the recipient to approve it; do not assume that sharing the screen also grants control.
  6. Select Leave when the help session is finished.

How to accept Quick Assist as the recipient

  1. Open Quick Assist and enter the helper’s six-digit code in Code from assistant.
  2. Select Submit, check that you intended to connect to this helper, then select Allow to share your screen.
  3. If the helper asks for full control, decide whether it is necessary and whether you trust the helper. Approve only if you want them to operate the PC.
  4. Select Cancel control to stop allowing full control. Select Leave to end the session.

Fix Quick Assist installation and launch problems

Quick Assist is missing

Install it from Microsoft Store: search for Quick Assist, then select Get or Install. If the Store app is unavailable on a work or school PC, an organization policy may block downloads; ask your IT support person or administrator rather than trying to bypass the restriction.

Microsoft Store installation fails

  1. Press Windows logo key+R, type wsreset.exe, and press Enter. Wait for Microsoft Store to reopen.
  2. Install the latest available Windows updates.
  3. Check that the device’s time and location settings are correct, then try installing again.

WebView2 appears to be installing or Quick Assist does not launch

Quick Assist depends on WebView2. Microsoft says it should already be installed with Windows 11 or Microsoft Edge; otherwise, Quick Assist may install it the first time it launches. Allow that installation time to complete before retrying.

The device runs an older Windows release

Microsoft identifies some older releases that may not install the Store version, including Windows 10 LTSC 2019 (1809), Windows 10 versions 20H2, 21H1, and 21H2, and Windows 11 version 21H1. Check the device’s edition and build before treating an older release as the cause. Microsoft suggests installing the latest Windows updates to get the original version running.

Microsoft’s Quick Assist guidance does not establish a universal firewall, network-port, or network-side fix. Avoid changing those settings based on guesswork; for managed devices, ask the administrator.

Quick Assist vs. Remote Desktop and Windows Remote Assistance

Tool Best suited to How the session works Key requirement or distinction
Quick Assist A one-off help session with a friend, family member, or another trusted helper The helper shares a six-digit code; the recipient enters it and separately approves screen sharing and any full-control request Microsoft Store app; requires WebView2. Store installation may be blocked on managed devices.
Remote Desktop Connecting to a remote PC for remote access A remote-access setup, rather than Quick Assist’s code-and-consent help flow Microsoft’s setup guidance requires the remote PC (host) to run Windows Pro. The connecting client can run Windows Home or Pro, or another operating system. See Microsoft’s Remote Desktop instructions.
Windows Remote Assistance A separate Windows remote-help option Uses an invitation-based process; Microsoft documents Easy Connect as another option It is distinct from Quick Assist. See Microsoft’s Remote Assistance instructions.

Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025, according to Microsoft. Microsoft says it no longer provides free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, or security fixes for Windows 10; that lifecycle change is separate from Quick Assist itself (Microsoft’s Remote Desktop and Windows support guidance).
