Use ProtonDB to find recent, Steam Deck-specific reports about the same problem you’re seeing, then test a suggested fix one change at a time. ProtonDB is a community source of clues—not Valve certification—so start with Steam’s basic troubleshooting steps and treat individual workarounds as hypotheses to verify.

What ProtonDB can—and can’t—tell you

ProtonDB collects reports from people testing games with Proton on Linux and aggregates community ratings. It is a community project and says it is not affiliated with Valve. Its score is not the same thing as a Steam Deck compatibility label.

Steam’s categories are Verified, Playable, Unsupported and Unknown. Verified means a game works well by default; Playable may need manual configuration; Unsupported means Steam does not currently consider it playable; and Unknown means it has not been tested for compatibility. For Playable or Unsupported games, Steam directs users to the Steam Store’s Steam Deck Compatibility section for details about unmet Verified requirements. These labels apply to both Steam Deck LCD and OLED models. See Steam’s Deck troubleshooting guide.

Find reports that match your game and device

Open the exact game page

Search ProtonDB using the game’s exact title or Steam app ID. This helps avoid reports for a similarly named game. ProtonDB pages can show an overall rating, Steam Deck certification status, a Steam Deck report count, device filters and individual dated reports. For example, the Unravel Steam Deck page and My Time at Sandrock Steam Deck page illustrate device-specific reports and the kinds of details users may include.

Filter to Steam Deck

Select the Steam Deck device filter rather than treating reports from other Linux PCs or handhelds as directly interchangeable. Other devices may differ in hardware, controls and configuration, so their reports are less direct evidence for what will happen on your Deck.

Read individual reports, not just the aggregate

Start with the newest reports that describe your symptom. Check the report date, whether the user actually launched and played the game, playtime if shown, and the specific issue. A short rating alone is less useful than an entry that describes what happened and under what setup.

Separate the observed problem from the suggested solution. Identify whether the report concerns a launch failure, crash, visual or audio issue, controls, a launcher, or low performance. Then note any stated Proton version, launch options, graphics settings or workaround. Reports may include structured observations about battery, input, readability, performance and fixes, but not every report supplies all of that context.

When reports conflict, compare them by age, Deck relevance, symptom, Proton/configuration details and evidence depth. A recent report of the same failure is more actionable than an old report about a different issue, but age alone does not make older information irrelevant. A single failure does not show that every Deck user will encounter it, and an old positive report does not prove the current game build works. ProtonDB displays dates and user details, but there is no established formula for scoring the reliability of reports; treat these comparisons as practical clues, not a quantified measure.

Apply fixes in a controlled order

1. Establish a clean baseline

Install available Steam Deck system updates and restart the device before experimenting. Steam Support lists updates and a restart among its first steps for instability. Retest the same part of the game so you can tell whether the baseline change helped.

2. Test one Proton version change

If a recent Steam Deck report that matches your issue suggests a Proton version, record the current selection before changing it. In Steam, open Library > select the game > Menu > Properties > Compatibility, then enable Force the use of a specific Steam Play compatibility tool and choose the suggested tool. Steam’s guide suggests trying the latest Proton. It also notes that Steam might download the Windows version if only the Linux version is installed.

Valve Steam Deck 1TB Upgraded Handheld Gaming Console with Carring case, 1280 x 800 OLED Display Silicone Soft Cover Protector & Joystic Cap & Tempered Glass Film Bundle
  • Valve is entering the gaming console marketplace with the new Steam Deck, a console geared towards PC gamers. The Steam Deck can be docked to a monitor, and used as a PC, or docked to a TV.
  • Players can play a huge variety of games at any time with the comfort of a console and the freedom of a PC. Not anti-glare screen.
  • Like the name suggests, the Steam Deck will include upgraded 1TB storage, and will include a carrying case. A micro SD slot will also enable expanded storage.
  • Valve partnered with AMD to create a specialized APU optimized for handheld gaming, and Valve says the chip will deliver performance to run AAA gaming titles.
  • The Steam Deck is outfitted with a 7-inch touchscreen, and two trackpads under the control sticks that allow gamers to operate games never designed outside of mouse and keyboard capabilities.

Retest the same section of the game. If the change does not help, restore the original setting before testing another suggestion. ProtonDB reports do not establish one universally best Proton version for every game or Deck.

3. Reduce graphics load for performance problems

If the game launches but runs poorly, try lowering its graphics preset or adjust one individual setting to reduce system load, as Steam Support recommends. Change one setting at a time and retest the same scene or activity; this makes it easier to identify which adjustment, if any, improves performance.

4. Verify files for missing content or crashes

Use file verification when content appears to be missing or the game crashes—not as a universal compatibility fix. Open the game’s Properties > Installed Files page and choose the file-verification option. Steam warns that some files may fail verification because local configuration files are intentionally not replaced. Follow Steam’s instructions for verifying game files.

Know when to stop experimenting

If the problem remains after updates, a restart and a relevant, reversible test, contact Steam Support or the game developer. Be especially cautious with reports that propose unusual launch options, custom compatibility builds or deleting data: look for corroborating reports, understand what the change affects and have a way to undo it before proceeding.
