Render or reveal the page’s core content on its own path, then start optional widget loads independently. Promise.allSettled() is useful for handling each widget’s success or failure, but it waits for every supplied promise to settle. If you await it before rendering the core content, the core content still waits.
Keep core content and optional widgets on separate paths
The key is where you put the wait. Load and render required page content without depending on the optional-widget aggregate. Start widget loaders alongside one another, then update each widget’s container when you handle their outcomes.
renderCoreContent(coreData);
const widgetLoads = [
loadRecommendations(),
loadRelatedArticles(),
loadWeather(),
];
Promise.allSettled(widgetLoads).then((results) => {
const [recommendations, articles, weather] = results;
if (recommendations.status === "fulfilled") {
renderRecommendations(recommendations.value);
} else {
showWidgetFallback("recommendations");
}
if (articles.status === "fulfilled") {
renderRelatedArticles(articles.value);
} else {
showWidgetFallback("articles");
}
if (weather.status === "fulfilled") {
renderWeather(weather.value);
} else {
showWidgetFallback("weather");
}
});
This example illustrates the pattern; it is not tested in a specific application. The loaders are invoked before the aggregate is created, so they can run concurrently if each loader begins its work when called. The aggregate does not make them finish faster: its callback runs only after all supplied promises settle.
Each result corresponds to the input promise at the same array position. Keep destructuring in the same order as the loader list; positional mismatches can make a valid result render in the wrong widget.

Use await without making the core wait for widgets
An async function pauses at each await in that function, not the entire program. Code later in the same function still depends on the awaited promise, however. Render core content before awaiting optional widget work:
async function loadPage() {
const coreData = await loadCoreData();
renderCoreContent(coreData);
const results = await Promise.allSettled([
loadRecommendations(),
loadRelatedArticles(),
]);
updateOptionalWidgets(results);
}
Here, core data is required, so the function waits for it before rendering. The optional-widget aggregate is awaited only after that render. If later code in this function is not needed to show core content, this ordering keeps it out of the core-content path.

Keep widget identity with each task
For a longer or changeable widget list, store each widget’s identity beside its loader. This makes the relationship between a result and its destination explicit while preserving the required input order:
const optionalWidgets = [
{ id: "recommendations", load: loadRecommendations },
{ id: "articles", load: loadRelatedArticles },
];
const results = await Promise.allSettled(
optionalWidgets.map(({ load }) => load()),
);
results.forEach((result, index) => {
const { id } = optionalWidgets[index];
if (result.status === "fulfilled") {
renderWidget(id, result.value);
} else {
hideWidgetOrShowFallback(id);
}
});
Handle each outcome deliberately
Promise.allSettled() fulfills with one outcome record per input, whether that input fulfilled or rejected. Check status before reading value or reason:

- For
status === "fulfilled", usevalueto render the widget. - For
status === "rejected", usereasonfor diagnostics and show an appropriate fallback, empty state, or no widget.
A graceful page need not display a technical error to users, but failures should remain observable in logs or monitoring. Otherwise, a widespread service problem can look indistinguishable from normal absence of optional content.
A late widget can also shift surrounding content as it appears. Reserve space or use a clear loading state where that would make the page disruptive. This is implementation guidance, not a quantified performance result for this pattern.

Choose between Promise.all() and Promise.allSettled()
Choose according to whether the tasks are independently useful and how failures should affect the overall operation. Neither method makes content render sooner by itself.
| Behavior | Promise.all() |
Promise.allSettled() |
|---|---|---|
| On an input rejection | The aggregate rejects as soon as an input rejects. Other operations continue, but their outcomes are not included in the rejected aggregate. | The aggregate fulfills after every input settles and includes a status record for each one. |
| Individual outcomes | On success, provides the fulfilled values. If one input rejects, the aggregate does not provide a complete set of outcomes. | Reports whether each input fulfilled or rejected, with its corresponding value or reason. |
| Good fit | Use when the results are jointly required and any failure should fail the operation. | Use when tasks are independent and each result should be handled separately. |
What Promise.allSettled() does not solve
- It does not impose a deadline. A promise that never settles keeps the aggregate pending. If widgets need a deadline, implement a separate timeout or cancellation policy suited to the application.
- It does not cancel or accelerate work. A slow request remains slow, and the other operations continue while the aggregate waits.
- It does not move JavaScript off the main thread. Synchronous JavaScript can still delay rendering and interaction.
- It does not control browser loading strategy. A synchronous script can block parsing or painting before promise handling becomes relevant.
Keep non-critical work off the rendering path
Promise aggregation addresses how your code handles asynchronous outcomes; it is not a rendering optimization on its own. MDN’s guidance is to keep non-critical resources and JavaScript out of the critical rendering path, defer non-critical JavaScript when appropriate, and minimize main-thread work. See MDN’s lazy-loading guide and critical rendering path guidance.

MDN’s lazy-loading guide reports historical median resource weights from 2011–2019: desktop rose from about 100 KB to 400 KB, and mobile from about 50 KB to 350 KB. These figures describe that historical period, not current resource sizes or the effect of this widget pattern; they are not a benchmark of Promise.allSettled().
For the precise API behavior, consult MDN’s Promise.allSettled() reference. The examples here make no browser-version support claim.
