What Perplexity can—and cannot—do with code
Perplexity’s Help Center says you can upload code and ask for explanations, debugging help, or help understanding a snippet. That makes it useful for discussing code and investigating a failure. It is not, on the evidence documented in the reviewed product pages, a substitute for your language runtime, compiler, test suite, debugger, or IDE.
Use it to generate and examine hypotheses. Then run the proposed change in the environment where the problem occurs and check the result yourself. A plausible explanation is not confirmation that the diagnosis is correct.
Perplexity’s file-upload guidance also says long files may be distilled to the most relevant parts. For a large source file or project, point to the function and error location rather than assuming the whole codebase will be considered. Perplexity’s file-upload help

How to ask Perplexity to investigate a bug
- Start a thread and attach focused code. Use the attachment control in the search bar to upload a file, or provide the smallest snippet that still reproduces the issue. If the bug is in a large file, identify the relevant function and location.
- Give the conditions needed to understand the failure. Include the exact error text, programming language and runtime version, what you expected, what happened instead, and what you have already tried. This information helps narrow the question; it is practical prompting advice, not a published Perplexity template.
- Ask for a diagnosis and a minimal change. For example: “Explain why this error occurs and suggest the smallest change that could fix it.” Ask which assumptions the explanation depends on and what test could distinguish it from other possible causes.
- Check the suggestion outside Perplexity. Apply it locally, then run the relevant command, test, or debugger in your own development environment. Review the output and confirm that the change fixes the reported issue without breaking expected behavior.
For example, instead of asking only “Why is this broken?”, share the function, exact traceback, runtime version, and expected output. Then ask Perplexity to identify the likely failure point, state its assumptions, and propose a minimal patch. This gives you a concrete suggestion to verify rather than an unsupported claim that a fix has been tested.
Uploading a snippet, a file, or several files
A focused snippet is often the clearest starting point because it keeps the question centered on the code path and error. Upload a file when the relevant context is hard to extract, and explain where the issue occurs. Perplexity’s upload documentation warns that long files may be reduced to selected relevant content, so do not assume every line—or an entire repository—will be analyzed in full.

The same Help Center page lists a 25 MB maximum per file and up to four files at once. It also gives historical daily upload limits of three for Free and unlimited (at least 100) for Pro. The page is undated in the search result and appears to reflect older documentation, so treat those quotas as dated figures, not confirmed current limits. Free, Pro, and API use are different
Perplexity’s plan materials describe expanded file-upload and analysis access, along with broader research and model access, for Pro compared with Free. These are general plan descriptions, not a guarantee of a particular coding capability, model, quota, or outcome. Features and limits can change, so consult the current Perplexity Pro overview and subscription plan comparison before choosing a plan for frequent code analysis.

The API is a separate route for developers building their own applications. Perplexity describes its Agent API as supporting workflows with web search, URL fetching, and reasoning controls, and its Search API as providing ranked web results, domain filtering, multi-query search, and content extraction. Those capabilities can support retrieval or search features in a product; they do not establish that the API executes or tests code. Perplexity’s plan comparison distinguishes API use from its consumer web and app subscriptions and says API access is billed separately. - Remove secrets such as API keys and passwords before sharing code.
- Include only the context needed to investigate the issue.
- Reproduce the error locally and run relevant tests after making a change.
- Review the proposed patch for behavior beyond the reported failure.
