To use optimized battery charging on Android, open your phone’s Battery settings and enable the manufacturer’s charging-protection feature—called Charging optimization, Adaptive Charging, Battery protection, Smart charging, or a similar name. The exact path and behavior depend on the phone model and software; Pixel, Galaxy, Xiaomi, OnePlus, and Motorola use different controls.
Adaptive modes delay the final part of charging until near your usual unplug time, while fixed-limit modes stop around a selected percentage such as 80%. The instructions below cover the major Android manufacturers and explain what to do when the setting is missing or the phone charges past its apparent limit.
Key takeaways
- Android has no single optimized battery charging setting or universal menu path; manufacturers use names such as Charging optimization, Adaptive Charging, Battery protection, Smart charging, and Optimised charging.
- On a supported Pixel, the control is under Settings > Battery > Battery health > Charging optimization, with Adaptive Charging and Limit to 80% options.
- Google documents Limit to 80% for Pixel 6a and later, while Pixel Adaptive Charging is available on Pixel 4a and later, including Fold models, when supported software is installed.
- Samsung Galaxy phones commonly provide Basic, Adaptive, and Maximum modes under Settings > Battery > Battery protection, but available modes vary by model and One UI version.
- Optimized charging changes when or how far the phone charges; Adaptive Battery separately manages app battery use and is not a charging cutoff.
What is optimized battery charging on Android?
Optimized battery charging on Android reduces the time a phone remains at a very high charge level by delaying the final part of charging, limiting the maximum charge, or both. The exact behavior depends on the manufacturer, phone model, software version, temperature, charging duration, and whether the phone has learned a regular schedule.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsOptimized charging is not one standardized Android feature. A Pixel may call the control Charging optimization, a Galaxy may use Battery protection, Xiaomi may use Smart charging, and OnePlus may use Optimised charging or Optimised night charging. A phone may also omit the feature entirely or offer only one protection mode.

Some implementations hold the battery near 80% and complete charging shortly before the expected unplug time. Other implementations impose a user-selected ceiling, such as 80% or 85%. Temporary protection can also reduce charging during prolonged high-temperature charging or after the phone has remained connected for several days. The manufacturer’s descriptions of Pixel Charging optimization, Samsung Battery protection, Xiaomi Smart charging, and OnePlus Optimised charging show these differences.
Which Android phones have optimized charging?
Pixel, Galaxy, Xiaomi, Redmi, POCO, OnePlus, and Motorola phones can expose a charging-optimization or battery-protection control, but availability is model- and software-specific. Use the following table as a starting point, then verify the path in the support guide for the exact phone.
| Phone family | Common settings path | Available behavior documented by the manufacturer | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Google Pixel | Settings > Battery > Battery health > Charging optimization | Adaptive Charging or Limit to 80% | Limit to 80% is documented for Pixel 6a and later; labels require supported software. |
| Samsung Galaxy | Settings > Battery > Battery protection | Basic, Adaptive, or Maximum; Maximum may offer 80%, 85%, 90%, or 95% | Modes and limits vary by Galaxy model and One UI version. |
| Xiaomi, Redmi, and POCO | Settings > Battery > Battery protection | Smart charging, Optimized charging, Regular charging, or an 80% Battery protection mode | Menus and available modes differ across models and regions. |
| OnePlus | Battery or Battery health; some manuals use Settings > Battery > Advanced settings > Optimized night charging | Delays charging beyond approximately 80% until shortly before the usual usage time | The label and location depend on the OnePlus model and OxygenOS version. |
| Motorola | Settings > Battery > Optimized charging | Optimized charging and, on some phones, separate Overcharge protection | The exact controls are model-specific. |
How do you use optimized battery charging on a Google Pixel?
On a Pixel with the current Charging optimization controls, open Settings > Battery > Battery health > Charging optimization, turn on Use charging optimization, and select Adaptive Charging or Limit to 80%.
- Open Settings.
- Tap Battery.
- Tap Battery health.
- Tap Charging optimization.
- Turn on Use charging optimization.
- Choose Adaptive Charging or Limit to 80%.
Google provides this Pixel-specific path and explains the two modes in its official Pixel battery guidance. A Pixel running different software may show a different label or may not expose both choices.
How does Pixel Adaptive Charging work?
Pixel Adaptive Charging learns the user’s charging habits and delays completion of the final portion of charging, so the phone spends less time at 100%. Pixel 4a and later models, including Fold models, can learn charging habits when the feature is supported.
Google says Adaptive Charging generally needs about 14 days to learn a routine. Irregular schedules, travel, and changing wake-up times can prevent Adaptive Charging from activating consistently. When Adaptive Charging is active, the Pixel displays a notification showing when the phone expects to finish charging.
Adaptive Charging is most useful when the phone is regularly connected overnight and needs to reach full charge near the usual start of the day. Adaptive Charging is less predictable for a phone that is charged at widely different times.

What does Pixel Limit to 80% do?
Pixel Limit to 80% prioritizes long-term battery preservation over the maximum runtime available from a single charge. Google documents the option for Pixel 6a and later devices. The phone normally stops charging at about 80% instead of charging to 100%.
Pixel periodically charges fully—approximately every tenth cycle—to keep battery-capacity readings accurate. When a full charge occurs, Google recommends leaving the Pixel connected for at least 30 minutes after the battery reaches 100%.
Limit to 80% is the more predictable choice for people who usually finish the day with substantial charge remaining. Limit to 80% may be inconvenient for travel, long workdays, or any situation where maximum runtime matters.
How do you disable Pixel Charging optimization?
To disable Pixel Charging optimization, return to Settings > Battery > Battery health > Charging optimization and turn off Use charging optimization. Disabling Use charging optimization turns off the user-selected Adaptive Charging or Limit to 80% control.
Pixel phones can also temporarily limit charging to approximately 70–80% during extended charging in high temperatures or after continuous charging for several days. Temporary protection is separate from the user-selected Charging optimization setting. When a temporary-protection notice appears, select Charge to full or restart the phone if a full charge is needed.
How do you turn on optimized charging on a Samsung Galaxy?
On a supported Galaxy phone, open Settings > Battery > Battery protection and choose Basic, Adaptive, or Maximum. Samsung warns that menu names, available modes, and operating behavior vary by Galaxy model and software version.
Samsung documents the three common modes as follows:

| Galaxy mode | Charging behavior | When to choose it |
|---|---|---|
| Basic | Charging stops at 100% and resumes when the battery falls to 95%. | Choose Basic when full capacity is more important than minimizing time at 100%. |
| Adaptive | The phone learns the user’s routine, stops around 80% during the relevant period, and switches to Basic before the expected wake-up time. | Choose Adaptive for a regular overnight charging routine with a full battery needed in the morning. |
| Maximum | Charging stops at a selected limit. Samsung documents limits such as 80%, 85%, 90%, or 95%, depending on the phone and software. | Choose Maximum when a predictable charge ceiling matters more than maximum runtime. |
Samsung’s Battery protection documentation describes these modes, while Samsung’s Canada support guidance notes that older Galaxy models or other One UI releases may show fewer modes or a fixed 85% limit.
How do you use Smart charging on Xiaomi, Redmi, or POCO?
On a supported Xiaomi phone, open Settings > Battery > Battery protection > Smart charging. Smart charging learns charging habits, may stop charging at 80% in applicable situations, and can slowly complete charging to 100% overnight so the battery spends less time fully charged.
The exact Xiaomi-family menu can differ. Some Xiaomi and POCO phones show Regular charging, Optimized charging, and Battery protection under Settings > Battery > Battery protection. Xiaomi describes Battery protection as the mode that stops at 80%, while Optimized charging adjusts charging according to usage scenarios.
Use Xiaomi’s Smart charging instructions for the first menu layout and Xiaomi’s POCO battery-protection explanation for an example of the alternative layout. A POCO or Redmi phone may not expose every mode listed in Xiaomi documentation.
Where is optimized charging on OnePlus?
On OnePlus, look in Battery or Battery health for Optimised charging or Optimised night charging. Some OnePlus manuals use Settings > Battery > Advanced settings > Optimized night charging, while newer manuals may place Optimised charging directly under Battery or Battery health.

How do you enable Motorola Optimized charging?
On a supported Motorola phone, open Settings > Battery > Optimized charging. Motorola documentation also describes a separate Overcharge protection control under Battery.
Motorola’s available labels and behavior are model-specific, so use the current user guide for the exact phone. The presence of Overcharge protection does not necessarily mean that the phone has the same adaptive schedule or 80% limit offered by Pixel, Galaxy, or Xiaomi devices. Motorola’s official Optimized charging and Overcharge protection guide is the appropriate reference for model-specific behavior.

Why does an Android phone charge past 80%?
An Android phone charging past an apparent 80% limit does not automatically mean that optimized charging has failed. Several normal explanations apply:
- The selected mode is adaptive rather than fixed. Adaptive modes may hold the phone near 80% temporarily and finish at 100% shortly before the expected unplug or wake-up time.
- The phone is calibrating its battery estimate. Pixel Limit to 80% periodically allows a full charge, approximately every tenth cycle, so the phone can maintain accurate battery-capacity readings.
- Temporary protection has ended. Pixel can limit charging to approximately 70–80% during extended heat or several days of continuous charging, then return to normal behavior when the triggering conditions end.
- The phone uses a different manufacturer implementation. Samsung, Xiaomi, OnePlus, and Motorola do not all use a fixed 80% ceiling.
- The setting is unavailable on that model or software version. A similarly named menu on another phone does not prove that every Android model supports the same feature.
First check the selected mode and any charging notification. Next check the phone’s temperature, software version, and exact model guide. On Pixel, select Charge to full from the temporary-protection notice or restart the phone when a full charge is needed.
What is the difference between optimized charging and Adaptive Battery?
Optimized charging controls the phone’s charging timing or charge ceiling, while Adaptive Battery controls how apps use battery power. The two features have similar names but solve different problems.
| Feature | What the feature controls | Where to look on Pixel | Does the feature set an 80% charging limit? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Charging optimization | Charging timing, completion schedule, or maximum charge level | Settings > Battery > Battery health > Charging optimization | Yes, when Limit to 80% is available and selected; Adaptive Charging may instead finish near the expected unplug time. |
| Adaptive Battery | App battery usage and background activity | Settings > Battery > Battery Saver > Adaptive Battery | No. Adaptive Battery is not a charging cutoff. |
| Battery Saver | Power use while the phone is running | Battery Saver controls, separate from Charging optimization | No. Battery Saver is not optimized charging. |
Google places Adaptive Battery separately from Charging optimization in its Pixel battery-optimization guidance. Turning on Adaptive Battery will not create an 80% charging limit, and selecting Limit to 80% will not manage app background activity.
Which charging mode should you choose?
The best mode depends on whether the phone needs maximum daily runtime or spends long periods connected to a charger.

| Your charging pattern | Recommended choice | Reason | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| The phone is plugged in overnight on most nights and must be full in the morning. | Adaptive Charging, Adaptive Battery protection, Smart charging, or Optimised night charging | The phone can delay the final portion and finish near the expected usage time. | Irregular schedules, travel, or changing wake-up times can make adaptive behavior inconsistent. |
| The phone normally finishes the day with plenty of charge remaining. | Pixel Limit to 80% or Samsung Maximum/Battery protection | A fixed or selected ceiling reduces unnecessary charging to the highest levels. | The phone starts the day with less available runtime. |
| The phone is used for travel, navigation, long shifts, or other unusually long days. | Charge to full or use Basic when available | Maximum capacity is available for the demanding day. | The battery can spend more time at a high charge level. |
| The phone has no charging-optimization control. | Use the manufacturer’s normal charging controls and prioritize temperature management. | Not every Android model supports the feature. | There is no software setting to add a manufacturer feature that the model does not provide. |
No universal battery-life extension or guaranteed number of additional years can be promised from optimized charging. Official documentation explains how the controls reduce high-charge exposure, but the outcome depends on the phone, usage pattern, heat, and charging routine.
How can you keep optimized charging working reliably?
Keep the phone and charger cool during charging. Google advises avoiding overheating, and Samsung and Xiaomi document temperature-related charging safeguards. High temperature can change charging behavior or cause the phone to pause or limit charging.
Use a compatible charger and cable, but do not expect an accessory to add optimized charging. Optimized charging is controlled by the phone’s operating system and battery settings, not by buying a particular charger. If a replacement is needed, a compatible USB-C phone charger can provide power; verify compatibility with the phone manufacturer’s charging documentation, such as Google’s general Pixel battery and charging information.

What should you do if the setting is missing?
- Identify the exact phone model. “Android phone” is not enough because the feature is implemented by the manufacturer.
- Check the Android and manufacturer software version. Menu names and locations can change after software updates.
- Search Settings. Try Charging optimization, Adaptive Charging, Battery protection, Smart charging, Optimized charging, Optimised charging, Optimized night charging, and 80% limit.
- Update the phone. Install available system updates, then search Battery settings again.
- Read the model-specific support page or manual. Verify that the model supports the feature rather than copying a path from a different phone.
- Contact the manufacturer for persistent battery problems. In its January 23, 2025 Android battery guidance, Google directs users with persistent battery issues to the device manufacturer because charging controls are device-specific. See the official Android battery guidance.
Google documents the Pixel 80% option as available on Pixel 6a and later, not universally on every Pixel or Android phone. A missing Limit to 80% option can therefore be a model limitation rather than a software fault.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Optimized battery charging on Android is a manufacturer-specific battery-protection feature. Find it under Battery settings, choose an adaptive schedule for regular overnight charging, or choose a fixed 80% or Maximum limit when battery preservation matters more than maximum daily runtime.
