To automate desktop Chromium-based Opera with Selenium, start OperaDriver as a service, connect Selenium to it with webdriver.Remote, and pass Opera’s executable path through ChromeOptions if automatic detection is unreliable. Choose the OperaDriver release by the Opera Stable version named in its release entry—not by assuming the driver’s version number matches Opera’s.
What OperaDriver does—and which Opera it supports
OperaChromiumDriver is Opera’s ChromeDriver-derived WebDriver implementation for automating Chromium-based Opera. It works with Selenium bindings and supports desktop and Android automation. WebDriver lets a test interact with a page—for example, by navigating, clicking links, entering text, and submitting forms. The project README says no extra setup is needed for Chromium-based Opera starting at version 26; that statement does not guarantee that every current Opera and OperaDriver pairing is compatible.
This guide covers the documented desktop Python workflow. Presto-based Opera is a different case: the project points readers to OperaPrestoDriver rather than OperaChromiumDriver.
Choose an OperaDriver release for your Opera version
Before installing or changing capabilities, check your installed Opera version and the target browser named on the official OperaChromiumDriver releases page. The driver’s release number is not necessarily the Opera version it targets. At the time the releases page was accessed on October 3, 2026, its latest entry was OperaDriver 152.0.7977.120, labeled for Opera Stable 136 and shown as published September 22, 2026. Release listings can change, so verify the current entry when setting up.

- In Opera, open the browser’s About page to identify its installed version and channel.
- On the releases page, find the driver entry whose description names the corresponding Opera Stable version.
- Download the binary for your operating system and make it executable where required. Keep its path handy.
- Keep the Opera executable path handy too, particularly if you have multiple browser installations or the driver does not detect Opera.
Do not choose a build just because its number looks close to the browser’s. If no release description identifies your target browser version, compatibility is not established by the version number alone.
Set up desktop Opera automation in Python
The desktop documentation uses Selenium’s RemoteWebDriver with an OperaDriver service. Install Selenium in your Python environment, download the compatible OperaDriver binary, and substitute the real paths for your platform. This example follows the documented service-and-remote-driver pattern, with navigation and cleanup added:

The example uses the Selenium 4 pattern; service construction can vary across Selenium binding versions. If startup fails before the try block is reached, stop the service in your surrounding cleanup or rerun after confirming no orphaned driver process remains.

Use the browser’s default executable
If Opera is installed where the driver can find it, the desktop documentation also describes passing empty capabilities and allowing the driver to auto-detect Opera. Auto-detection is convenient, but an explicit binary_location is easier to reason about when several Opera installations are present or detection selects the wrong one.

The documentation describes a third mode: start Opera with a remote debugging port, then configure the matching debugger address when connecting. Use this when the browser must be launched separately or prepared with a particular profile. The port used to launch Opera and the address supplied to the driver must match; an instance not started for remote debugging cannot be attached this way.
Use other Selenium languages
The Opera desktop documentation’s detailed examples are in Python and includes a separate capabilities-based example for Selenium 2 and 3. For Java, JavaScript, or another Selenium binding, follow that binding’s current RemoteWebDriver and options syntax; do not copy legacy constructor details as if they were verified for every current version.

OperaDriver offers browser options similar to ChromeDriver, and the desktop documentation notes support for logPath for browser logs. Consult the project documentation for the exact option syntax appropriate to your binding version.
Troubleshoot session startup and navigation
Session creation fails
- Record the exact Selenium, Opera, and OperaDriver versions. Check that the release entry names the Opera Stable version you actually installed.
- Confirm that
opera_driver_pathpoints to the downloaded driver executable and that it can run on your operating system. - Set
options.binary_locationto the intended Opera executable if auto-detection may be choosing another installation. - Inspect driver logs, including
logPathwhere supported, before changing capabilities at random.
An issue opened on November 8, 2021 reports one user’s session-creation error with Opera 81.0.4196.31 and OperaDriver 95.0.4638.54 despite specifying a binary. That historical report illustrates that setup failures can occur; it does not establish a current general defect or explain that individual failure.
The wrong Opera opens
Set binary_location explicitly and verify the path points to the intended browser installation. If attaching to a running instance, verify that Opera was launched with remote debugging enabled and that the configured debugger address matches its port.

The page loads, but the test behaves unexpectedly
First confirm which browser executable was launched and whether the page itself is reachable in that same instance. Log the browser and driver versions with each run so a changed installation or release pairing is distinguishable from a page-level problem.

The project also documents using OperaDriver with Appium on Android. Appium can switch between native UI and web contexts, which can help dismiss a native Opera dialog before testing a web page. This is an optional Android workflow, not a requirement for the desktop Selenium setup above; use the project’s Appium instructions for that configuration.
