The feature is documented in Amazon’s Scribe release notes; a different Kindle model showing version 5.20.1 does not by itself establish support for Scribe’s handwriting tools.
What Kindle update 5.20.1 adds
Amazon’s Kindle Scribe release notes, labeled September 2026, say: “You can now add handwritten sticky notes in fixed layout eBooks or personal documents.” The notes also mention performance improvements, bug fixes, and other general enhancements, but do not describe them in detail. The sticky-note instructions below apply to the Scribe feature, not automatically to every Kindle with software numbered 5.20.1.
How to add a handwritten sticky note on Kindle Scribe
- Confirm the device and software. Check that you have a Kindle Scribe and that its installed software is version 5.20.1. See Amazon’s Kindle software update page for model-specific version information.
- Open supported content. Open a fixed-layout eBook or a personal document.
- Choose an entry point. To start a note directly, open the writing toolbar and choose its sticky-note tool. To associate the note with text, select the text and use the action menu.
- Write the note using the on-screen controls. Amazon’s release-note description does not specify the subsequent controls, exact menu labels, or save behavior, so follow what appears on your device.
The release notes identify these two ways to begin, but do not establish further differences between them. Use the toolbar when you want to start from the writing tools; use the selection-and-action-menu route when you are starting from selected text.
Does version 5.20.1 add sticky notes to every Kindle?
No. Amazon’s update listing includes version 5.20.1 for several Kindle models, but the handwritten sticky-note feature is described in the Scribe release notes. A matching software number on another Kindle is not evidence that it supports Scribe’s writing toolbar or handwritten notes.

This is a list of models for which Amazon shows the software version, not a list of models confirmed to support Scribe’s sticky-note feature. Amazon shows earlier software versions for some older devices, including the 2022 Kindle 11th Generation. Check the model-specific listing rather than relying on the version number alone.
How to check for or install the update
Amazon says Kindle software updates download and install automatically when a device is connected wirelessly. If you need a manual update, first identify the exact Kindle model, then use the corresponding instructions on Amazon’s software update page. Amazon says manual update files should be downloaded onto a desktop computer. The version listing and rollout can change, so consult the page for current model-specific information.
What Amazon’s instructions do not specify
The published feature description identifies supported content in broad terms as “fixed layout eBooks or personal documents,” but does not list particular file formats. It also does not explain the controls after the initial toolbar or action-menu choice, how notes are saved, regional availability, or pen compatibility. Check the on-device prompts for the steps that follow, and do not assume that every file, pen, or Kindle model is supported.
