On the Pixel 11 Pro, HiLight uses the rear light to signal selected activity while the phone is face down. Google currently documents two uses: Gemini interaction cues and incoming calls from favorite contacts. It is not a general-purpose notification light for messages or other apps.
Which Pixel phones support HiLight, and what does it signal?
Google lists the Pixel 11 Pro, Pixel 11 Pro XL, and Pixel 11 Pro Fold as HiLight-compatible. The light can give visual cues while the phone is face down. Its documented signals are:
- Speaking with Gemini: a cue during Gemini interactions.
- Calls from favorites: a cue for incoming calls from favorite contacts through Phone by Google or WhatsApp.
Google’s current setup instructions do not describe HiLight as supporting general message alerts or per-app notifications. Google’s August 13, 2026 announcement mentioned possible future additions, including messages from favorite contacts, but those are not among the uses in its HiLight Help instructions.
Turn HiLight on and choose its cues
- Open Settings.
- Tap System > HiLight.
- Turn on Use HiLight.
- Choose whether to enable Speaking with Gemini, Calls from favorites, or both.
Set up light cues for favorite callers
Mark the contacts you want to recognize as favorites in Contacts. Then open Settings > System > HiLight and enable Calls from favorites. When a favorite calls through Phone by Google or WhatsApp, HiLight can glow while the phone is face down.
