For the live feed that carries prerecorded video to YouTube, use H.264 video, AAC audio, constant bitrate (CBR), and a two-second keyframe interval. Choose the video bitrate for the stream’s exact resolution and frame rate, use RTMPS where your encoder supports it, and test the full setup before leaving it unattended. These are settings for the outgoing live feed—not a substitute for preparing the prerecorded source file.

Recommended YouTube Live encoder settings

Setting Recommended choice
Video codec H.264
Video bitrate mode Constant bitrate (CBR)
Keyframe interval 2 seconds; YouTube says not to exceed 4 seconds
Audio codec AAC
Stereo audio 44.1 kHz sample rate; 128 Kbps bitrate
Ingest protocol RTMPS where supported; YouTube recommends it for an encrypted connection

These are YouTube’s live-ingestion recommendations on its encoder settings page, observed October 3, 2026—not results from an independent test. See YouTube’s live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

Choose bitrate for resolution and frame rate

Use the row matching the resolution and frame rate you actually send to YouTube. The figures below are YouTube’s H.264 live-ingestion bitrate recommendations: each entry shows minimum followed by recommended bitrate.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Resolution and frame rate Minimum Recommended
360p30 0.4 Mbps 4 Mbps
480p30 0.4 Mbps 4 Mbps
720p30 3 Mbps 8 Mbps
720p60 3 Mbps 8 Mbps
1080p30 5 Mbps 14 Mbps
1080p60 6 Mbps 17 Mbps
1440p30 7 Mbps 21 Mbps
1440p60 8 Mbps 34 Mbps
2160p30 11 Mbps 42 Mbps
2160p60 14 Mbps 50 Mbps

For example, YouTube recommends 14 Mbps for 1080p30 and 17 Mbps for 1080p60. Do not use one bitrate for every stream: a higher frame rate or resolution can require a different target. The figures are platform guidance observed October 3, 2026, rather than guaranteed minimums for a particular viewer’s connection.

Keep the source file and live feed settings separate

A prerecorded file played into an encoder is not itself the live stream YouTube ingests. Configure the encoder’s outgoing feed using the live recommendations above, even if the source file has different properties. YouTube’s separate upload guidance lists MP4, H.264, AAC-LC, 48 kHz audio, progressive scan, and a closed GOP among supported or recommended choices for uploaded videos. Those upload recommendations do not replace the live-ingest bitrate and keyframe guidance. See YouTube’s recommended upload encoding settings.

Set up the encoder and YouTube connection

  1. Choose an encoding method. You can use software on a computer or a standalone hardware encoder. YouTube does not require dedicated hardware; it notes that higher-production-value streams may benefit from professional-grade encoders. Confirm that your chosen encoder supports RTMPS and your target resolution and frame rate.
  2. Get the connection details. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or select the stream to obtain its stream URL and key. Enter them in the encoder’s YouTube or custom RTMP destination fields. Treat the key like a password; reset it if it is exposed. YouTube’s setup guidance is at Set up your encoder for live streaming.
  3. Prefer RTMPS when available. Select the RTMPS server URL provided for the stream, rather than RTMP, if your encoder offers the choice. YouTube recommends RTMPS because it encrypts the connection to YouTube. Its supported live protocols include RTMP and RTMPS; protocol availability can depend on encoder support. See YouTube’s encoder settings guidance.
  4. Apply the live settings. Set H.264, CBR, and a two-second keyframe interval; do not exceed four seconds. Set AAC stereo audio to 44.1 kHz and 128 Kbps. Enter the bitrate that matches the intended resolution and frame rate in the table above.
  5. Start a controlled test. Start the encoder and check the Live Control Room preview before relying on the stream. Confirm that picture and sound are present and that the incoming resolution and frame rate are what you intended.

Plan bandwidth and unattended operation

YouTube advises that outbound bandwidth must support the total stream bitrate and recommends leaving 20% headroom. For planning, add that margin to the combined video and audio bitrate, and assess the actual sustained upload capacity of the connection—not just its advertised peak. See YouTube’s live streaming tips.

A 24/7 prerecorded stream also depends on more than codec settings. YouTube recommends testing ahead of time, checking the Live Control Room preview, testing backup-encoder failover, verifying local archive files, and checking event accessibility. Those practices support reliability, but YouTube does not specify an uptime guarantee for an unattended 24/7 setup. Plan how you will detect and respond to encoder, network, or playlist interruptions; this operational need follows from the continuous nature of the stream, not from a platform uptime promise. See YouTube’s streaming tips and encoder setup guidance.

Or let it run in the cloud

For prerecorded YouTube programming, StreamNeo keeps an uploaded video or playlist live from the cloud, so your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. Upload the recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It plays uploaded videos rather than broadcasting from a camera, and streams to YouTube.

Troubleshoot common problems

  • The stream will not connect: Check that the stream URL and key are copied into the correct encoder fields and correspond to the selected event in Live Control Room. If the key may have been exposed, reset it and update the encoder. Confirm RTMPS is supported and correctly selected if you are using the RTMPS URL.
  • YouTube reports an unstable or insufficient connection: Check the sustained outbound capacity against the combined audio and video bitrate, including YouTube’s recommended 20% margin. Reduce the video bitrate or target resolution/frame rate if the connection cannot sustain the planned feed.
  • Video appears choppy or differs from the intended format: Verify that the encoder’s outgoing resolution and frame rate match the selected bitrate row, and that it is using H.264, CBR, and a two-second keyframe interval. Inspect the source playlist as well as the encoder output.
  • Audio is missing or unsuitable: Check that the audio track is enabled and routed into the encoder, then verify AAC stereo at 44.1 kHz and 128 Kbps. Listen to the Live Control Room preview rather than relying only on the source file’s playback.
  • The stream stops during unattended playback: Check whether the encoder, network, or source playlist failed, and use the tested backup or recovery procedure. YouTube recommends testing backup-encoder failover and checking archive files before a stream is relied on continuously.

Check rights and YouTube policy before looping content

Encoding settings do not grant permission to use the recording. Confirm that you have the necessary rights for the video, music, and any other material in the stream, and review YouTube’s applicable copyright and reused-content rules before broadcasting a loop. A technically valid H.264/AAC feed can still face restrictions if its content or rights are not compliant. Use StreamNeo’s copyright safety checklist as a preparation aid; it is not a substitute for rights clearance or YouTube’s policy decisions.
