To restyle a photo with Google Photos Remix, open Create, choose Remix, select a template, add a reference photo if asked, then tap Generate. You can save or share the result, or regenerate it using the same template.
How to use Remix in Google Photos
Google’s current step-by-step instructions are for Android. Labels and availability may differ on other devices.

Open Google Photos and tap Create at the bottom of the screen.

Open Remix by tapping the Remix your photos header or Photo remix.

If you see an acknowledgement the first time, review it and tap Try now.

Choose a featured template, tap View all to browse, or use the category labels to filter templates.

Tap the template you want. If it asks for a reference image, tap Add photo and choose an existing photo or take a new one with your device camera. Some personalized templates may start generating without a reference photo, subject to Gemini feature eligibility.

Tap Generate. When the result appears, choose Save, Share, or Regenerate to try another output with that template.
Google says templates are updated regularly and may change or be removed, so the options you see can differ from examples in older instructions. See Google Photos Help: Use AI to create with Google Photos.
What Remix does—and what to expect
Remix applies a generative style to a photo through a template. Google’s original announcement described styles such as anime, comics, sketches, and 3D animation. On September 24, 2026, Google announced 15 new templates, with examples including red-carpet moments, birthday cards, and photo-booth shots. That is a count of new templates, not a measure of output quality; the update is available on Android and iOS in select countries for users over 18. Results are not guaranteed to match the original photo exactly. Google Photos Help cautions: “These features may give unexpected or inaccurate results.” If an output is not what you wanted, you can regenerate it, but Google does not publish a measured accuracy rate or quality ranking for templates.

Google says Remix-generated photos and videos include an invisible SynthID digital watermark. Its separate statement about a visible watermark applies to generated videos, not still photos.

Google’s Help page says Photo Remix is for people aged 18 or older using a personal Google Account. Workspace and school accounts are excluded.

Generative creation features are not available in every region, and functionality can vary by location. Even if you meet the account and age requirements, the feature may not yet be available to you.

Google limits the number of daily generations. Its Help page says a Google AI plan increases that number, but does not describe a paid plan as necessary to try Remix. Check the current terms if you reach the limit; specific allowances may change.

Start by checking that you’re signed into a personal Google Account, are at least 18, and have backed up photos. Remix also needs a network connection. If those conditions are met and the option is still missing, regional availability or rollout may be the reason; Google says access and functionality can vary by location. Its September 2026 template announcement also specifies select countries, rather than universal availability. Updating the app may be a reasonable basic check, but Google’s cited instructions do not identify an app update as a guaranteed fix.
