Use Lighthouse as a repeatable audit-and-diagnosis tool: measure one representative WordPress page, save the report, investigate a specific finding, change one thing, and rerun under comparable conditions. Its results point to issues worth checking; they do not prove that a particular plugin, host, or optimization will help your site.
Choose a page and configure Lighthouse
Start with a page that matters to a real visitor—for example, a landing page, article, or product page. A single audit describes the URL and conditions you tested; it does not establish how every page or visitor experience performs.
You can run Lighthouse in Chrome DevTools, from the command line, as a Node module, or with Lighthouse CI. It can audit public pages and pages that require authentication. For a first audit in Chrome, open the page, launch DevTools, select the Lighthouse panel, choose the device that matches your question, and select the relevant report categories. - Choose mobile to investigate the mobile experience, or desktop when that is the comparison you intend to make.
- For a first-visit scenario, use DevTools’ option to clear storage. If you are investigating repeat visits, use consistent storage conditions that reflect that scenario.
- If a run errors or behaves unexpectedly, Chrome recommends trying a clean Incognito window without other tabs; browser extensions can interfere with audits.

Save a baseline before changing WordPress
Keep the initial report or record its URL, device, selected categories, storage conditions, and results. That baseline lets you compare a later run without confusing a change in test setup with a change to the site.
Read the metrics alongside the page-load screenshots, Opportunities, Diagnostics, and passed audits. Opportunities identify potential performance improvements; Diagnostics offer clues for investigation. A failed audit is not automatically a one-click fix, and an item that appears on one URL may not apply to another page or template. Lighthouse’s report guide explains how to read the results.

Investigate the finding that matches the report
If the page feels slow to respond
The main thread handles work such as parsing HTML and CSS, evaluating and running JavaScript, rendering the page, and processing user events. When it is busy, the page may not respond promptly to taps or clicks. Inspect script work, unnecessary third-party code, complex style or layout work, and unused code before choosing a fix. Chrome’s main-thread guidance describes the work involved; audit labels and thresholds can vary by Lighthouse version.
If JavaScript execution is prominent
JavaScript has costs beyond downloading the file: the browser also has to parse, compile, execute, and retain code in memory. Chrome recommends sending only code a page needs, using code splitting where appropriate, minifying and compressing, removing unused code, and caching. On WordPress, first trace the script to its source—theme, plugin, or third party—then assess what disabling or changing it would do to the site’s functions. If requests or transfer size stand out
Use the resource summary to see request counts, transferred bytes by resource type, and third-party contributions. That diagnostic does not directly change the Performance score, although reducing requests or bytes may improve other metrics. Follow the evidence in your report: inspect images and other media, fonts, document size, or third-party assets as relevant rather than applying a blanket optimization. Chrome explains the diagnostic in its resource summary documentation.
If the document takes a long time to arrive
A slow document response points toward server-side or WordPress configuration as well as the page itself. Chrome’s WordPress guidance lists possible avenues to investigate: a lightweight theme, full-page caching or static delivery, removing unnecessary plugins, and—in cases where the diagnosis supports it—different hosting. It also mentions PHP OPcache and memory caching such as Redis or Memcached. These are options to evaluate against the observed issue, not a guaranteed checklist or ranking. Audit names are version-sensitive: Chrome’s guide says the response-time audit moved into the Document request latency insight in Lighthouse 13. The same guide documents a 600 ms failure threshold for that audit, but that number is specific to the documented audit and version context—not a universal measure of acceptable user experience. Check the current documentation and the wording in your own report before relying on a threshold.

- Choose one intervention tied to a finding—for example, investigate one identified script rather than changing several plugins and cache settings at once.
- Apply that change and keep the test page, device, categories, and relevant storage conditions the same.
- Run Lighthouse again and compare the specific metrics, screenshots, and audit observations with the baseline, not only the overall score.
- Check that the page still works as intended. If the result is unclear, restore or adjust the change before testing another intervention.
Testing changes individually helps show whether a particular change affected the observed result. It does not by itself prove that every visitor will experience the same outcome. Chrome’s DevTools guidance recommends auditing after changes to understand their individual effects.

Use scores as signals, not guarantees
Lighthouse’s performance score is a summary, and its metric weights have changed over time. A score is useful in context, but chasing a fixed target is not a substitute for inspecting the underlying metrics and findings. Keep the run conditions consistent and focus on the user-facing issue you set out to investigate. Repeat across important templates and watch for regressions
Once you have worked through one page, audit other high-impact pages or templates separately. An article, product page, and landing page can load different assets and behave differently, so do not treat one URL as a sitewide verdict.
