These options serve different purposes: Gemini receives your prompt, while Gboard enters text where your cursor is.
Choose the right voice workflow

Speak a prompt to Gemini on Android
- Open the Gemini mobile app and tap the microphone.
- Speak your question or instruction. Google Gemini Apps Help says, “The microphone stays open for up to 5 minutes to listen to your prompt.”
- Use Stop to pause listening, then the microphone control to resume. Submit the prompt when you are ready.
This is for giving Gemini a voice prompt, not for leaving an unlimited background dictation session running. The Gemini mobile app’s availability can depend on language, device, account, and location. Some features powered by Google Assistant are unavailable to certain work or school accounts.
Use Gemini hands-free with “Hey Google”
On supported Android setups, “Hey Google” can launch Gemini when the assistant and Voice Match settings are enabled and available. Depending on the device, touch-based ways to open the assistant may include holding the power button or swiping from a screen corner.
Wake-word and quick voice-action availability varies by language and account. Google notes that some hands-free actions are unavailable for supervised accounts and certain languages, so do not assume the wake word works on every work or school device.

Start a spoken back-and-forth with Gemini Live
- Open the Gemini mobile app on Android or iPhone/iPad.
- Tap Live, or swipe to the Live screen where that option is supported.
- Speak naturally; you can interrupt Gemini while it is talking and continue the conversation.
On supported Android devices, Google also documents starting Live with “Hey Google, let’s talk Live” or “Hey Google, let’s talk.” Live is not available in the Gemini web app according to Google’s cited help, and availability is subject to Google’s rollout and eligibility conditions. If other people may be included in a Live chat or recording, Google asks users to respect their privacy and get permission.
Dictate directly into Gmail, Keep, or another work app
- On Android, open an app with a text field, such as Gmail or Keep, and tap where you want the words to appear.
- With Gboard active, tap the keyboard microphone.
- Speak the text. To add formatting, say supported commands such as “comma,” “question mark,” “new line,” or “new paragraph.”
- Review the text in the field and make corrections before sending or saving it.
Spoken punctuation and commands differ by language. This is the documented route when the desired result is text in the selected field, rather than a prompt in Gemini.

Know which Gboard features your device supports
Standard Gboard voice input and Pixel-specific advanced voice typing are not the same feature. Google says advanced voice typing requires Pixel 6 or later. On supported devices it can insert punctuation automatically and recognize commands such as “delete last word,” “clear,” “next,” or “stop.”
- Detailed voice edits are limited, according to Google’s cited help, to Pixel 8 and later and English (US).
- Voice commands for writing tools are available on Pixel 9 and later.
- Check the device, keyboard language, and feature settings before relying on advanced editing or commands.
A Pixel is not required for every Gemini voice feature or for standard Gboard voice input; the Pixel requirement applies to advanced Gboard voice typing.

Understand the documented voice-typing privacy details
Google’s advanced Gboard voice typing documentation says spoken text stays on the device except when you invoke “Fix it” or detailed edits. For detailed edits, Google says both the voice-command transcript and the full text in the input field are sent to its servers for processing; the page says no audio is sent and no text or audio is stored on Google servers. These statements describe the documented advanced voice-typing behavior, not every Gemini or keyboard workflow. Check Google’s current privacy documentation and the settings for your own device and account.
