Gemini can place a regular call through an Android phone’s calling app, or—if you meet narrower eligibility requirements—handle some routine business calls for you. Gemini Live is different: it is a spoken conversation with Gemini, not a call to a person or business. Choose the right mode, verify what will be shared, and use your phone’s calling app directly for emergencies.
Choose the right Gemini calling mode

These are distinct features, not different names for the same calling function. The eligibility rules and data handling differ, and Google’s documentation does not establish that one mode is more accurate than another.
Make a regular call with Gemini on Android
Check setup and permissions
Google lists an Android phone or tablet, an active mobile plan, the Gemini mobile app, contact information saved on signed-in devices, and Phone permission for the Google app as requirements for standard calls. Allowing Contacts and Call Logs permissions can improve contact matching. Gemini uses the device’s default phone app. This feature is not available in Gemini in Google Messages, the Gemini web app, or Live chats.
If Keep Activity is off, you can still request basic calls. A request that depends on another Google service—for example, using Maps to find a nearby business—may not work. Google’s setup and availability details are in its standard calling help.

Give Gemini a clear destination
In the Gemini mobile app, ask for the call plainly. For example:
- “Call Jordan Lee.”
- “Call [phone number].”
- “Call [business name].”
For a business you just discussed, refer to it clearly—for example, ask Gemini to call the restaurant it identified. If Gemini does not select the Phone app, add @Phone to your prompt. Check the destination shown by your device before proceeding, especially when a contact has multiple numbers or a business name could match more than one listing.

Use “Call for me” for a routine business task
Check eligibility first
As of Google’s current feature documentation, “Call for me” requires the user to be at least 18 and located in the US, a Pixel 11 with a US SIM, the Gemini mobile app signed in, a Google AI subscription, the Public Beta Phone by Google app, the latest Gemini mobile app, and English as the device language. Calls are limited to US phone numbers. The feature is rolling out gradually, so meeting the listed conditions does not guarantee that it has reached your account. These are date-sensitive requirements; check Google’s eligibility and availability page for current details.
Describe the outcome and review the call
- State the task and useful details. Give Gemini a specific goal, plus dates, times, preferences, and acceptable alternatives. For example: “Call [Restaurant Name] and book a table for two at 7 PM tomorrow.”
- Review the proposed call before starting. Check Gemini’s summary, the phone number it will call, and the information it proposes to disclose. Edit the task if anything is wrong or too personal.
- Start only when the details are right. Tap Call for me. You can cancel before the call connects.
- Monitor the interaction. Follow the live transcript or listen to the audio; the microphone is muted by default. Tap Take over if you need to speak. Gemini announces the handoff and leaves the call.
- Check the outcome. Read Gemini’s result summary. If the reservation, quote, or other outcome matters, confirm it with the business rather than treating the summary as a guarantee.
Google says daily call limits apply; if you reach the limit, you must wait until the next day. The feature’s controls and task examples are described in Google’s Call for me help.

Use Gemini Live for conversation, not for calling someone
Start a Live chat when you want to talk through an idea or rehearse a conversation with Gemini. You can interrupt it mid-response to add context or redirect the discussion. Live does not dial a person or business through your Phone app; use standard calling or “Call for me” for that.
Google advises respecting other people’s privacy and asking permission before recording or including them in a Live chat. When Keep Activity is on, Live recordings and transcripts are stored in Gemini Apps Activity and handled under the Gemini Apps Privacy Notice. Safety checks before and during a call
- For an emergency, open the regular calling app and dial directly. Google explicitly says not to use the Phone app in Gemini for emergency calls; “Call for me” cannot call emergency services such as 911. See standard calling limitations and Call for me limitations.
- Do not delegate sensitive or prohibited tasks. Google says not to use “Call for me” to make payments or other financial transactions, share sensitive financial details, passwords, Social Security numbers, or health information, or make telemarketing calls. If a conversation turns toward one of these topics, take over or stop the call.
- Verify the destination and disclosures. Before starting an agentic call, check the number and proposed information Gemini plans to share. Google says every “Call for me” call begins by disclosing that an AI assistant from Google is calling on your behalf on a recorded line, and stating your name. The wording quoted by Google is: “Gemini starts every call by disclosing that it’s an AI assistant from Google calling on a recorded line on your behalf, stating your name.”
- Stay available to intervene. Follow the transcript or audio and use Take over if the call needs your judgment. An automated task can misunderstand a request or receive an unexpected answer.
- Protect the lock screen. If you do not want calls or messages to be possible while the phone is locked, turn off Make calls and send messages without unlocking in Gemini’s Gemini on lock screen setting. See Google’s lock-screen settings help.
Understand what Gemini stores and processes
“Call for me” data
Google’s feature-specific disclosure says call transcripts are sent to and stored on Google servers, but call audio is not stored on Google’s servers. A copy of both the transcript and audio is saved locally in Phone by Google call history. Google says recordings and transcripts are not used to train its AI models. Calling activity is available in Gemini Apps Activity, where you can delete it; you can also delete call history, transcripts, and recordings in Phone by Google. Gemini may share your name, email address, phone number, or other details needed for the task, but Google says you review and agree to the proposed information before the call starts. Standard calls and connected apps
For standard calling through Connected Apps, Google says Gemini may process activity, device calling and messaging logs, contact information, and device information or settings to choose an app and connect with the right person. You can disconnect supported apps in Connected Apps settings or delete activity. Google’s general Gemini privacy terms also warn that some user-provided data may be reviewed, so do not enter confidential information. These broader Connected Apps statements should not be confused with the feature-specific “Call for me” explanation of where its audio and transcripts are stored. Gemini Live activity
Live recordings and transcripts follow the Gemini Apps Privacy Notice and, when Keep Activity is on, are stored in Gemini Apps Activity. You can manage or delete your activity there. For Live-specific privacy guidance, see Google’s Gemini Apps Privacy Hub.
