To start GameChat on Nintendo Switch 2, open the C Menu from the HOME Menu or press the C Button on a supported controller, then create a room and invite friends or join an invitation. Voice chat uses the console’s built-in microphone, so you do not need to buy a headset or microphone. Nintendo currently requires an internet connection and a Nintendo Switch Online membership.
What you need to use GameChat
- A Nintendo Switch 2 with an internet connection that can support GameChat. The console checks the network during initial setup.
- A Nintendo Switch Online membership. Nintendo’s no-membership Open-Access Period ran from June 5, 2025, through March 31, 2026, and has ended. See Nintendo’s GameChat Guide and FAQ for current requirements.
- Friends on your Nintendo Switch friend list who have approved you for GameChat.
- A compatible USB camera only if you want video chat. A separate microphone is not required.
Start or join a GameChat room
- From the HOME Menu, open the C Menu, or press the C Button on a Joy-Con 2, Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controller, or Nintendo Switch 2 GameCube Controller.
- Follow the first-time setup prompts if this is your first use. Nintendo checks the internet connection during setup.
- Create a GameChat room and invite approved friends, or accept an invitation to join someone else’s room.
- In the room, open the C Menu and select the microphone control to mute or unmute yourself. Voice chat uses the console’s built-in microphone.
Nintendo allows up to 12 friends in a chat group. The limit for people using video and/or sharing a game screen at the same time is four, combined across those activities.
Turn on video chat
Video chat requires a compatible USB camera, sold separately. Nintendo’s own Nintendo Switch 2 Camera is a supported example. A USB-C camera can connect directly to the console; a standard USB camera can connect to the dock. Open the C Menu in the room and select the camera control to enable video.
Other USB cameras may work, but Nintendo does not guarantee their compatibility. To check a camera, use the console’s Test USB Camera setting. If you only want voice chat, you do not need a camera.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Share your game screen
Open the C Menu during a room session and select Share Game Screen. Up to four people can use video chat and/or share a screen at once, so video and screen sharing count toward the same limit.
A game’s age rating and parental-control settings can affect whether another person can see shared gameplay. Nintendo may also turn off sharing temporarily for privacy, such as when you enter a password or payment information. Some games have their own GameChat behavior; consult that game’s support information if its sharing options differ.

Set up GameChat for a child or supervised account
Users under 16 and users with a Supervised Nintendo Account need GameChat parental controls configured in the Nintendo Switch Parental Controls app before using the feature. Nintendo’s GameChat parental controls guide and parent first-time setup guide explain how to arrange the family group and supervised account, link the console and app, and configure GameChat. A parent or guardian must register a phone number to their own Nintendo Account on the child’s behalf.
Parents can approve the friends a child may use GameChat with. If the other person also has a supervised account, approval is needed on both sides. Parents can enable or disable video chat, set the permitted camera view to face only, person only, or full video, and withdraw permission. When video is enabled, permission may be requested for each session. Disabling video prevents the child from seeing other users’ camera feeds; game-screen sharing is controlled separately.

Troubleshoot common GameChat problems
- Voice chat does not work: Check that first-time setup is complete, the console has a continuing internet connection, you are in a room with friends who have approved you, and your microphone is not muted.
- A USB camera does not work: Check it with the console’s Test USB Camera setting. Nintendo does not guarantee that third-party cameras are compatible.
- A friend cannot see shared gameplay: Check the game’s age rating and parental settings, and consider whether sharing has temporarily stopped during a private entry such as a password or payment detail.
- A game behaves differently in chat: Some GameChat features depend on the specific software. Check the game’s own support information.
