Yes. OpenCode can connect to OpenRouter, where you can choose a model currently marked free. You’ll need OpenCode installed and an OpenRouter API key; free access is limited, model availability can change, and provider data terms vary. To avoid accidental charges, select a free model explicitly rather than relying on automatic routing.
What OpenCode and OpenRouter do
OpenCode is the coding-agent interface; OpenRouter is the service that routes requests to models from different providers. OpenRouter describes OpenCode as “an open-source AI coding agent available as a terminal interface and desktop app (beta)” in its OpenCode integration guide. The guide documents connecting OpenCode to OpenRouter through the app’s provider setup.
This is hosted model access, not local inference: the documented workflow uses an OpenRouter API key and sends requests to the selected model provider. The sources do not establish a need for a special GPU or other physical hardware.
How to connect OpenCode to OpenRouter
- Install OpenCode. Follow the current instructions and package-manager options on the official OpenCode site. Installation commands can change, so use the site rather than treating a copied command as permanent.
- Create an OpenRouter account and API key. Use OpenRouter’s official key interface, linked from its integration guide. Treat the key like a password: do not include it in a prompt, screenshot, public post, or checked-in repository.
- Connect from OpenCode. In OpenCode, run
/connect, choose OpenRouter, and enter the key when prompted. Follow the integration guide if the displayed labels differ or authentication fails. - Choose a free model deliberately. Find a model in OpenRouter’s free-model catalog, confirm its current model ID and pricing, then select that model in OpenCode. Do not assume a general automatic router will stay on free options.
- Check capabilities and data terms before using real code. Confirm the model supports the tools the coding agent needs, has enough context for your task, and has acceptable provider-specific privacy terms. Start with a non-sensitive task to see whether it works reliably for your use.
What “free” means on OpenRouter
As displayed on OpenRouter’s pricing page on October 3, 2026, the Free plan listed 25+ free models, four free providers, and a limit of 50 requests per day. These are time-sensitive service figures, not a promise of unlimited or permanently available inference. Check the current pricing page and limits documentation for the applicable account limits; eligibility and free-model ceilings can depend on account conditions.

OpenRouter’s support documentation cautions that automatic routing may choose paid models. If avoiding charges matters, choose a model explicitly identified as free and verify the model’s displayed price before sending substantial work. Free models can also become unavailable or change terms, so recheck the catalog when you use the setup again.
How to choose a free model for coding
There is no universal winner established by the cited official sources. OpenRouter says its free-model catalog rankings reflect total API token usage during the preceding seven days—adoption, not quality or benchmark performance. A high ranking alone does not establish that a model is the best choice for coding.

- Tool support: Check that the model supports the tool or function calling OpenCode needs for your workflow.
- Context capacity: Match the model’s context window to the size of the files and instructions you plan to provide.
- Availability and responsiveness: Free access is quota-limited, and provider availability can vary. Try a small task before depending on a model for a longer session.
- Data handling: Read the notices attached to the particular model and provider in the catalog. Terms are not uniform; some offerings may retain inputs or outputs or use them for training.
Protect your code and your budget
- Do not expose the OpenRouter key in source control, screenshots, logs, or prompts.
- Review the selected model’s provider terms before sending proprietary or sensitive code. The free catalog contains provider-specific notices, so do not assume prompts are private or never used for training.
- Use a clearly free model ID, not an automatic model router, when you need to avoid paid inference.
- Check current pricing and account limits before substantial use; free-model quotas and availability can change.
