The exact controls—and whether your current mode provides a compass cue for a placed marker—depend on the mode and input settings, so check them in game rather than relying on a universal key or bearing.
Check your mode and controls first
Fortnite controls can vary by device and can be customized in game. Epic’s [control settings support guide] covers PC and console settings. Its examples for opening Settings are Esc on PC or Mac, Options on PlayStation, Menu on Xbox, and + on Switch. The relevant control options depend on whether you use a keyboard and mouse or a controller.

- Open Fortnite’s Settings using the button or key for your platform.
- Select the input tab that matches your device, such as keyboard and mouse or controller.
- Find the map control in the bindings shown for your current mode. Use that binding to open the map; don’t assume one key works everywhere.
Epic’s controls documentation also states that controls vary by device and can be customized: Controls.
Use the map to choose a destination
Open the map and identify the area or loot destination you want to travel toward. If your mode offers a map-marker feature, use it to make the destination easier to find again. Close the map and check the HUD: if a compass or other directional cue appears, use it to guide your heading. Then reopen the map when needed to confirm your position and adjust course.

Do not assume that placing a marker in every current Battle Royale match will create a compass bearing. The official sources cited here do not establish that behavior for current Battle Royale. Verify what your match displays instead of treating a marker as a guaranteed navigation cue.
Track your position with the minimap
The minimap is the small map in a screen corner. Epic’s Minimap documentation describes it as showing your position in relation to the overall map; your pointer changes position on it as you move. Use it to check whether you are heading toward the destination, and use the full map when you need a broader view.

If the minimap is hidden
Epic’s developer documentation gives this route to turn it on: press Esc, select Settings, open HUD Options, set Minimap to On, and select Apply. Because this is developer documentation, the labels or path may differ in another mode or interface; follow the options shown in your current game.
Use landmarks and recheck your route
- Pick out visible landmarks that help you keep your bearings while traveling.
- Check the minimap as you move to see your position change.
- Open the full map periodically if you need to correct your direction or reassess the destination.
- Use any marker or compass cue only if it appears in your current mode and HUD.
This method helps with orientation; it does not identify where loot will spawn or provide a season-specific route. Loot availability and locations are not established by the navigation documentation cited here.

Creative map devices are different
Epic’s documentation for Map Indicator devices and Player Marker devices describes Creative tools, not universal Battle Royale controls. Map Indicators can add custom points of interest to the minimap and overview map. Player Markers can show player positions and, optionally, distance. Those Creative features should not be taken as proof that a standard Battle Royale loot marker produces a compass bearing.
