To use Focus Filters, open the settings for the Focus you want to customize, add an available app or system filter, and choose what it should show while that Focus is active. Focus Filters change supported apps’ information or behavior; they do not control whether an app can send notifications.
What Focus Filters change
Apple describes app filters as controls for what information apps show during a Focus. For example, you can choose which calendar or mail account is available while a particular Focus is on. The options you can add are shown on your device, and not every app necessarily offers a filter.
Filters are separate from notification permissions. A filter might show a work calendar during Work Focus; Focus notification settings separately determine whether notifications from a work chat app are allowed or silenced. See Apple’s iPhone Focus setup guide and notification settings guide.
Add a Focus Filter on iPhone
- Open Settings and tap Focus.
- Select the Focus you want to customize, such as Work or Personal.
- Scroll to Focus Filters and tap Add Filter.
- Choose an available app or system filter, then select the information to use while this Focus is active.
- Tap Add.
Apple’s example is choosing a calendar or mail account for the Focus. Follow the choices displayed in your own Add Filter screen, since supported options can vary. See Apple’s iPhone instructions.

Add a Focus Filter on iPad
- Open Settings > Focus and select the Focus to change.
- Tap Customize Focus, then Add Filter.
- Choose a filter, select the calendar, mail accounts, conversations, or Safari Tab Group you want, and tap Add.
Apple lists Calendar, Mail, Messages, and Safari filters in its iPad Focus instructions. The available choices on your iPad are the ones to use when setting it up.
Add or manage a Focus Filter on Mac
- Open System Settings > Focus and select a Focus.
- Under Focus Filters, click Add Filter.
- Choose an available filter and configure its options, then confirm the addition.
Apple documents Calendar, Mail, Messages, and Safari filters for Mac. For a Safari filter, select a Tab Group and choose whether external links should open in that Focus Tab Group. You can later edit a filter, temporarily turn it off, or remove it in Focus settings. The instructions are for the macOS 26 guide; labels may differ in other versions. Set up filters separately on each Apple device
Focus settings can be shared across Apple devices signed in to the same Apple Account when Share Across Devices is enabled, but Focus Filters themselves do not sync. If you want the same app customization on an iPhone, iPad, and Mac, add the filter separately in each device’s Focus settings. Apple explains this in its iPhone and iPad setup guides.
