Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWindows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallOn an immutable openSUSE host such as Leap Micro, choose the installation method by what you need: Flatpak for a supported desktop app, Distrobox for extra command-line tools in a container, Podman for containerized services, and transactional-update when software must be installed on the host itself. These approaches keep different things in different places, and host package changes require a reboot.
The hands-on openSUSE procedure described here is for Leap Micro 5.4 Beta, documented on 28 March 2023—not a guarantee that commands or packages are unchanged in current releases. The Distrobox engine details below come from the openSUSE Leap 16.0 man page; check the documentation shipped with your installed release before relying on compatibility.
Choose the right way to install software
| What you need | Approach | Where it lives |
|---|---|---|
| A desktop application packaged as a Flatpak | Flatpak | As an application rather than a host RPM change. The cited Leap Micro walkthrough demonstrates a per-user install, but does not document a complete remote setup for every release. |
| Command-line tools or a development environment | Distrobox | In a container using a chosen Linux image and package ecosystem. The openSUSE walkthrough recommends this route for adding tools without rebooting. |
| A service or workload | Podman and an OCI image | In a container; mount host directories when application data or configuration needs to persist outside it. |
| A package or integration that must be on the host | transactional-update |
In a new system snapshot, activated after reboot. |
Leap Micro is described by openSUSE as an “immutable operating system with read-only root.” Its read-only base is not where you install software as if it were a conventional mutable system. The Leap Micro guide describes Btrfs snapshots and automatic rollback if booting a new snapshot fails. That mechanism concerns system snapshots; it is not a substitute for backing up user data or a guarantee that every application problem can be undone.
Install a desktop app with Flatpak
The Leap Micro 5.4 Beta guide demonstrates installing Fedora Media Writer for the current user:

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
flatpak --user install org.fedoraproject.MediaWriter
The example uses Media Writer to write installation media without adding the image-writing application to the immutable host. It does not establish that this command configures a Flatpak remote, or that every app you want is available as a Flatpak. For other applications and releases, follow the Flatpak and openSUSE instructions applicable to your system.
Use Distrobox for additional tools
Distrobox lets you work with the package ecosystem of a Linux container image for command-line tools or development needs, rather than making those tools host package changes. The openSUSE Leap 16.0 distrobox(1) man page lists Podman, Docker, and Lilipod as supported container managers and describes using OCI images from registries such as Docker Hub and Quay, or another chosen registry.

Check engine compatibility for your release
For its Leap 16.0 packaging context, the man page lists minimum versions of Podman 2.1.0, Docker client 19.03.15, and Lilipod v0.0.1. These are the values in that man page, whose publication date is not shown; consult the manual installed for your exact release rather than assuming they apply unchanged elsewhere. The man page’s setup guidance describes rootless Podman or Docker configured for use without sudo.
Choose an image and account for its contents
A cloud image may be stripped down and lack common utilities, so you may need to install additional packages inside the container. The man page also documents optional --init support for an init system in a container and an --nvidia option to try host-driver integration. These are specific capabilities, not assurances that every image, driver setup, or workload will work.

- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
Distrobox wraps a container engine, so its behavior depends on that engine’s configuration. Treat it as a practical environment for tools, not as a complete security boundary from the host.
Run a service with Podman
The Leap Micro walkthrough uses Podman as its example container engine and demonstrates a Pi-hole service. An OCI container can keep service software out of the host base, while port mappings expose selected container ports on the host and volume mounts put persistent files at host paths. Follow the service’s own instructions to choose appropriate mappings and mounts.

In the cited example, the web interface is mapped to host port 8888 and DNS uses port 53. Those are example values, not universal recommendations. The same guide discusses Cockpit management on port 9090 and advises against exposing Cockpit publicly for home use; keep management access local to the network.
Many Docker deployment instructions may be adaptable to Podman, but not universally. Verify the service-specific instructions and configuration rather than assuming the engines are interchangeable in every case.

Install a package on the host with transactional-update
Use a transactional update when software genuinely needs to be installed on the host. The Leap Micro guide demonstrates either installing Docker directly into a new snapshot or opening a transactional shell and using zypper there:
sudo transactional-update pkg install docker
Alternatively:
sudo transactional-update shell
Inside the shell, run the required package command, such as zypper install docker, then exit the shell. Reboot to start using the modified snapshot; the host change is not active in the currently running root before that reboot. The exact package name and procedure should be checked against the Leap Micro release in use.
Choose physical or virtual installation media
For a physical installation, the Leap Micro guide’s workflow includes writing the downloaded image to a USB flash drive. For a virtual machine, skip the USB-writing step and use the image through the VM’s installation workflow instead. The guide does not specify a required USB capacity, brand, or speed.
