How to open standard emoji on a Samsung phone

In a messaging app or another app, tap a text field to open the on-screen keyboard.

On Samsung Keyboard, tap the smiley or emoji control. If you do not see it, open the keyboard toolbar or expand its options and look for the emoji button.

Tap an emoji to insert it into the text field, then send or post your message as usual.

The exact button and toolbar layout can vary. Samsung’s instructions for toolbar settings apply to the default Samsung Keyboard, and available controls can differ by model, carrier and software version. See Samsung’s Samsung Keyboard settings guide. If the toolbar is hidden or disabled, check the keyboard’s settings for a toolbar option; the available settings and labels may differ on your device.
Choose between emoji, stickers and GIFs
These options can all make a message more expressive, but they are not interchangeable. A standard emoji is the simplest character to insert in text. Stickers and GIFs are graphical items, and personalized Avatar or AR Emoji stickers represent a character you customize. What appears in the keyboard panel depends on the active keyboard, app and device configuration.

Samsung’s toolbar can include emojis, stickers, GIFs, voice input and settings. Samsung also describes emoji pairs and kaomoji on supported software. Its One UI 5.1.1 feature page reported “88 new emojis and 10 new animations” for emoji pairs in that release; those are additions described for One UI 5.1.1, not the current total emoji catalogue or a count that applies to every Galaxy phone. Find Galaxy Avatar or older AR Emoji
Samsung renamed AR Emoji features to Galaxy Avatar beginning with the Galaxy S25 launch for compatible Galaxy devices running Android 15 and One UI 7.0 or later. Older devices or software may still use the AR Emoji name and a different route, so do not assume the newer menu exists on every Galaxy phone.
On compatible software with Galaxy Avatar
Samsung’s newer route is Settings → Advanced features → Galaxy Avatar. Menu availability and labels vary by model and software version. Samsung’s Galaxy Avatar and AR Emoji guide was updated on 19 March 2026 and describes creation on One UI 7; it notes that images are illustrative and interface details can vary by operating system, device and region.
On older software using AR Emoji
Some older instructions use Camera → More → AR Zone → AR Emoji Camera or AR Emoji Studio. The route and feature availability are model-dependent. Samsung’s Colombia guidance says the feature is available on some models running Android 9.0 or later; that regional minimum should not be treated as a guarantee that every Galaxy device or market supports every Avatar feature. Send an Avatar or AR Emoji from the keyboard

Open a messaging app and tap its text field.

Open the Samsung Keyboard emoji panel.

Select Galaxy Avatar or AR Emoji, depending on the name shown on your device, then choose a character or sticker.

Send the selected item using the app’s usual controls.

Samsung documents this sharing route through its keyboard and warns that other keyboards may not support it. If the avatar option is absent, check that Samsung Keyboard is active and that your device’s software supports the feature. App support also affects how stickers and other graphical content are handled. Samsung’s Avatar and AR Emoji support guide covers keyboard sharing and related uses.

Create or personalize stickers
On supported configurations, Samsung offers Avatar or AR Emoji stickers for messaging and social apps, and tools to customize avatar stickers. You can also turn a photo in Gallery into a sticker. Samsung documents AI sticker creation from a prompt on supported configurations, but it is an optional feature rather than a universal control. The available tools and menus vary by device and software version; see Samsung’s custom-sticker guide.

Check which keyboard is active. The toolbar directions above are for Samsung Keyboard, and Samsung notes that other keyboards may not support the Avatar sharing flow.

Look in the expanded toolbar. A control may not appear in the compact layout. Toolbar availability and arrangement vary.

Check the app and text-entry context. Some keyboard options are limited to particular input contexts or require an additional app, according to Samsung’s keyboard onboarding guide.

Match the name to your software generation. Newer compatible software may show Galaxy Avatar; older versions may still say AR Emoji or use the Camera and AR Zone route.
Samsung cautions that available features, settings and menu options may vary by device and software version. Regional support pages also show that feature guidance can differ by market, so a path documented for one region or model is not a promise that it will appear on yours.
