Install the Microsoft Copilot app for macOS, sign in, and press Option + Spacebar to open its compact prompt window from anywhere. Basic Copilot chat is available without a paid Microsoft 365 subscription; account type and plan affect additional features and limits.
Install and sign in to Copilot on your Mac
- Get the Copilot app for macOS. Microsoft’s macOS guide covers using the desktop app. You can also use Copilot on the web if you do not want to install the app.
- Open Copilot and sign in. Choose a personal Microsoft account or a work or school account. Microsoft explains that the account type shapes the experience in its Copilot app getting-started guide.
- Ask a question or make a request. You can type into the main app or use the compact prompt window opened by the keyboard shortcut.
Open Copilot with a keyboard shortcut
Press Option + Spacebar to bring up Copilot’s compact prompt window from anywhere on your Mac. Type a request in the window to start a conversation. This shortcut applies to the Copilot app; it is not a macOS-wide Copilot feature.
To change or remove the shortcut, open Account > Keyboard Shortcut in the app. If the shortcut does not open Copilot, check that the app is installed and running, then review that setting for a change or disabled shortcut.
Choose light or dark appearance
By default, the app follows your Mac’s appearance setting. To choose a mode in Copilot instead, open Account > App Appearance and select light or dark mode.

Use Copilot for Mac-related questions
You can ask device-context questions about using your Mac—for example, how to take a screenshot. Treat the response as guidance rather than a system action: check the steps before relying on them, particularly if a feature or instruction may have changed.
Microsoft’s current macOS support guide lists Copilot Pages and Deep Research as unavailable in the Mac app. Feature availability can change, so consult the current macOS support guide if you are looking for either feature.

Choose between the Mac app and Copilot on the web
The desktop app provides the system-wide Option + Spacebar prompt and app appearance controls. The web version offers another way to access Copilot without relying on the Mac app. Choose based on whether you want those app-specific controls or prefer a browser; neither route is universally better.

Basic Copilot chat on the Mac app does not require a paid Microsoft 365 subscription. Microsoft distinguishes free Copilot from Copilot features in Microsoft 365 apps in its guide to free Copilot and Copilot in Microsoft 365. Paid plan features and usage limits depend on the plan and account, so check the applicable plan details rather than assuming a particular entitlement.

Personal and work or school accounts are different routes, not interchangeable access to content. A work or school account is managed by your organization, and access can depend on its configuration and license. Microsoft describes account-specific experiences and limits in its Copilot account updates guide.
