You can try Copilot in Microsoft Edge without signing in: select the Copilot icon in the upper-right toolbar and enter a prompt if the pane opens. Microsoft’s guidance is inconsistent, however. One support page describes no-account access, while its Edge setup guide says to sign in with a personal Microsoft account. The signed-out option may not appear for everyone.
Try Copilot in Edge while signed out

If the Copilot pane opens, enter a prompt and see whether it responds without asking you to authenticate. Microsoft’s separate guidance says Copilot can be used through Edge without a Microsoft account. That does not guarantee every browser, region, or account state will show the same option; Microsoft’s setup guide also tells users to sign in.

For a question about a webpage, video, or PDF, open it in Edge and ask Copilot about it or request a summary. Copilot’s use of page context depends on the prompt and your context settings.

Why Edge may ask you to sign in
Microsoft documents two different paths: its page How grounding works if you don’t have a Microsoft account says Copilot is available through Edge without an account, while its Edge getting-started guide answers that sign-in is needed and says: “Yes. Sign in to Edge with your personal Microsoft account to get started.” If you are redirected to sign in or Copilot is unavailable, the documented setup route is to sign in with a personal Microsoft account.
Signing in to an Edge profile and signing in to Copilot are not necessarily the same state; Microsoft’s guidance does not fully explain how they interact in every configuration. The pages also do not establish a universal signed-out bypass or specific feature quotas.

What you can do without an account
Microsoft says that, without a Microsoft account, Copilot prompts rely on public web data only. In that mode, Copilot cannot access your personal files, email, or organizational content. This is the documented boundary for no-account grounding, not a promise about every signed-in feature.
With Edge context clues enabled, Copilot may also use your prompt, recent conversation history, and browsing context, including the current webpage, its title, open tabs, and browser history. Microsoft says the sources used depend on whether your prompt refers to page content. Details are in How context clues work in Copilot in Edge.

Stop Copilot from using browsing context

In Edge, open the More menu.

Select Copilot and AI.

Turn off Allow Copilot to read context clues on the web.
Microsoft says browsing context is not saved to conversation history; only the prompt and Copilot response are saved. That statement is specifically about browsing context and conversation history, not every form of service processing or retention. Menu names or availability may change. Privacy notes for unsigned-in use
Microsoft’s Copilot privacy FAQ lists users who are not signed in to Copilot among groups whose data is not used to train its models. This is the FAQ’s claim about model training; it should not be read as a broader statement about all data handling or other signed-in experiences. Microsoft also advises against submitting confidential or sensitive personal information you would not want used for purposes described in its FAQ and Privacy Statement.
