What Claude Code plan mode does
Anthropic’s Claude Code documentation describes plan mode as a way for Claude to read project files and propose a plan without editing files until you approve. The status bar indicates when plan mode is on. This gives you a checkpoint to catch misunderstandings before implementation begins.
Plan mode does not replace your judgment: you act as the planning advisor by checking whether the proposed work fits the request, reflects the repository, and includes a way to verify the result.
How to start a planning session
Launch Claude Code from the project root so it can inspect the relevant repository. Begin with a broad question about the project, then narrow the discussion to the components involved. Anthropic’s Common workflows guide recommends this broad-to-specific approach for understanding areas such as architecture and how components interact.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Start in plan mode: Run
claude --permission-mode planfrom the project directory. The CLI reference listsplanas a supported permission mode; see Anthropic’s CLI reference. - Or switch modes during a session: Press Shift+Tab until the status bar displays
⏸ plan mode on. This is useful if the conversation already contains project context and you want to pause before editing. - Define the task and its checks: State the requested outcome, constraints, and what would count as completion. Ask Claude to inspect before proposing edits.
For example, for password reset support, you could ask: “First inspect the existing authentication flow and tests. Identify the files involved, dependencies, security-sensitive decisions, and acceptance criteria. Do not edit files yet; propose an ordered plan and list assumptions and tests.” Adapt the prompt to your project rather than treating this as a fixed command.
Review the plan before approving edits
Read the proposal as a reviewer, not as a formality. Ask Claude to investigate specific files or clarify a dependency when the plan rests on something unknown. Anthropic’s workflow guide recommends targeted questions about the codebase and how its parts fit together.

- Scope: Does the plan deliver the requested outcome without unrelated changes?
- Repository grounding: Does it identify relevant files and explain how the affected components connect?
- Dependencies and order: Are prerequisites scheduled before work that depends on them?
- Assumptions and risks: Does it surface uncertainty about existing behavior, compatibility, data changes, or edge cases?
- Acceptance and verification: Does it define success and name relevant tests or other checks?
- Reviewability: Can the work be delivered in small increments that are straightforward to inspect and test?
Do not approve a plan just because it sounds plausible. If it assumes an interface, migration, compatibility promise, or test command that has not been established, ask Claude to inspect the relevant code or explain the dependency first.
Implement in small steps, then verify
After the plan is clear, approve implementation and keep the work in increments small enough to review. Ask Claude to preserve required behavior or backward compatibility, run the relevant tests, and explain failures rather than treating them as a pass. Anthropic’s workflow guidance recommends small, testable increments and running tests to verify changes.

Before accepting the result, inspect the diff and test output yourself. Claude Code can help review and refine changes or highlight risks, but generated work still warrants human review before submission.
