The right setup depends on whether you want Claude’s Google Workspace connector, Google’s Drive MCP server, or a developer-built Gemini API workflow—there is no universal handoff feature established for every Gemini app.
Choose a way for both assistants to access the handoff
A Drive document works as a shared handoff when each stage of your workflow can access it. The connection options are not interchangeable: Claude’s Workspace connector is a native route inside Claude, Google’s Drive MCP server connects Drive to supported MCP clients, and Gemini API function calling is a developer route.

Google’s Drive MCP setup documents a remote endpoint at https://drivemcp.googleapis.com/mcp/v1, using OAuth 2.0 and Streamable HTTP for general clients. It requires enabling the Drive API and Drive MCP API, configuring OAuth, and setting up the client. The route is more involved than connecting a native Workspace connector, and an administrator may control whether it is allowed.
Pass a draft from Claude to Gemini and back
For a practical editorial or planning task, keep the handoff explicit and preserve each assistant’s contribution rather than letting one silently replace the other’s work.

- Define a bounded task. Ask Claude to turn a project brief into a one-page plan with goals, assumptions, open questions, and risks. This is an example workflow, not a vendor-tested recipe.
- Create a named Drive handoff file. Use a stable name such as “Website launch plan — review draft.” Include the task, source links or files, constraints, requested output format, and questions for the reviewer. Google’s Drive MCP tool list includes searching, reading, and creating files.
- Ask Gemini to review the file. Use a supported MCP client, such as Google Antigravity, or a developer-managed Gemini API integration. Request specific comments on unsupported assumptions, missing cases, or alternative approaches. Ask for a review section rather than an overwrite.
- Return the critique to Claude. Ask Claude to address each comment, identify which suggestions it accepts or rejects, and produce a revised version in a separate section or file version.
- Inspect the final document and access. Review edits and file operations yourself, then check that sharing permissions still match the intended audience.
A useful handoff structure is: task; source links or files; constraints; current draft; requested review; required output structure; unresolved decisions. Keeping the draft and critique separate makes disagreements visible for a person to resolve.
Understand the limits of Gemini and Workspace integrations
Gemini in Workspace integrations are third-party services surfaced in supported Gemini apps, not proof that any Gemini consumer app can open an arbitrary Claude-created Drive file or coordinate freely with Claude. Google describes the documented integrations as read-action integrations. If your particular Gemini app or account does not provide a supported connection to the file, use an MCP-capable host or a developer-built API flow instead.

Likewise, Gemini API function calling is an orchestration building block, not a turnkey bridge to Claude. The application must implement the custom function, execute it when Gemini requests it, and return the result. A developer can build a workflow around that behavior, but the exact connection to Claude and Drive depends on the application they create.

Connections inherit meaningful access. Claude says its Google Workspace connectors mirror the user’s existing Workspace permissions. Its help documentation says retrieved connector data is stored with the associated chat and can be removed by deleting that chat; it also describes encryption in transit and at rest. For consumer-product users who have opted into model training, content copied or pasted from connector sources or Claude responses may be used to improve models. Check the account type and applicable settings rather than assuming the same data treatment for every user.

Google warns that indirect prompt injection can arise when an agent processes untrusted data. A document can contain instructions that should be treated as content to evaluate, not automatically followed. Limit connections to the Drive content the workflow actually needs, use trusted tools, inspect proposed edits and file operations, and follow your organization’s data policies.
Before using the Drive MCP route in an organization, confirm that the Cloud project, OAuth scopes, client, and account plan are allowed by the administrator. Google’s setup guide lists Drive read-only and file scopes for OAuth consent configuration; grant only the access needed for the work and verify who can view the handoff file.
