To test a Chrome extension end to end, launch an automation-controlled Chrome or Chromium browser with the built extension loaded, perform a user-like action, and assert an observable result. The loading method and headless setup depend on the framework: Puppeteer, Playwright, and Selenium do not use interchangeable configuration. Start with an unpacked extension directory for development, then choose the framework-specific setup below.

Prepare the extension and choose what to test

Build the extension before launching the test browser. An unpacked extension is a directory of extension files that includes manifest.json; a packed extension is a .crx package. For a local development test, the unpacked directory is usually convenient because the browser can load the files directly. Chrome’s overview of extension end-to-end testing describes the broader workflow and supported automation routes: Chrome extension end-to-end testing.

Structure tests around what a person using the extension can observe: a changed page, a popup, an options page, or another user-facing result. Chrome recommends basing tests on what is visible to the user where possible. Directly inspecting extension state can be useful for a focused test, but it couples that test more tightly to implementation details.

  • Use a stable, test-only extension build and a known page or fixture.
  • Decide whether the test needs only the page effect, or must also access an extension page or service worker.
  • Keep browser state isolated between tests when stateful behavior could leak from one test to another.

Choose the automation route

Framework Documented extension setup Best fit Important caveat
Puppeteer puppeteer.launch({ enableExtensions: [EXTENSION_PATH] }) Node.js teams writing extension-focused tests. The official tutorial’s API example is version-sensitive. Confirm it against the installed Puppeteer version; reusing a browser across tests can weaken isolation.
Playwright Persistent context with its documented Chromium setup. Teams already using Playwright and comfortable following its extension-specific browser configuration. The cited guide is on the next documentation branch. Verify current stable instructions and installed browser versions.
Selenium / ChromeDriver Packed CRX with addExtensions; unpacked directory with the load-extension argument. Selenium also documents a WebExtension installation flow. WebDriver suites and Selenium-supported languages. Chrome and ChromeDriver major versions must match. Debugger attachment can affect service-worker shutdown behavior.
WebdriverIO Chrome’s automation overview points to Web Extension Testing guidance. Existing WebdriverIO suites. Use the current official WebdriverIO guide for the exact setup; avoid assuming another framework’s flags apply.

For browser and driver management, Chrome for Testing provides paired Chrome and ChromeDriver binaries across channels; see Chrome automation and testing. The right route is the one supported by your framework version and CI browser, not a universally best framework.

Load the extension with Puppeteer

Chrome’s official Puppeteer walkthrough uses enableExtensions at launch, then waits for an extension service worker when the test needs extension context. See Test Chrome Extensions with Puppeteer. A minimal Node.js example, based on that documented API, is:

const puppeteer = require('puppeteer');

(async () => {
  const extensionPath = '/absolute/path/to/extension';
  const browser = await puppeteer.launch({
    headless: false,
    enableExtensions: [extensionPath],
  });

  try {
    const page = await browser.newPage();
    await page.goto('https://example.com');

    // Assert an observable effect here, such as changed page content.
    // If extension context is needed, wait for the matching worker:
    const workerTarget = await browser.waitForTarget(target =>
      target.type() === 'service_worker' &&
      target.url().includes('background')
    );
    const worker = await workerTarget.worker();
    // Use worker only for an assertion that requires extension context.
  } finally {
    await browser.close();
  }
})();

Use an absolute path and replace the worker predicate with one that identifies your own extension and worker script. A generic substring such as background is only illustrative: projects can have different filenames, and multiple extensions can create multiple service workers. If the test does not need the worker, omit that wait and assert the effect through the page or extension UI instead. Check the Puppeteer documentation corresponding to your dependency version before adopting the launch option.

Load the extension with Playwright

Playwright’s extension guide demonstrates a persistent browser context and its bundled Chromium workflow. The guide describes using the Chromium channel for headless extension tests or running headed. Follow the current instructions at Playwright: Chrome extensions; the linked page is the next documentation branch, so check the stable docs and your installed Playwright release before copying configuration.

The essential test shape is to create the documented persistent context with the extension enabled, open a page, exercise the feature, and wait for a service worker only when needed. Unlike a regular ephemeral page context, the persistent context is part of the extension setup described by Playwright. Do not substitute Puppeteer’s enableExtensions option or ChromeDriver’s load-extension argument and assume Playwright will interpret them identically.

Playwright notes that an extension service worker can be suspended after 30 seconds of inactivity and restarted. Tests that rely on worker state should tolerate lifecycle transitions: wait for the worker when needed and avoid treating the worker’s uninterrupted existence as user-visible behavior.

Load the extension with Selenium and ChromeDriver

ChromeDriver documents two distinct loading options in its ChromeDriver extension guide. For a packed CRX, add the file through Chrome options:

ChromeOptions options = new ChromeOptions();

WebDriver driver = new ChromeDriver(options);

For an unpacked extension directory, pass the load-extension argument:

ChromeOptions options = new ChromeOptions();
options.addArguments("load-extension=/absolute/path/to/extension");
WebDriver driver = new ChromeDriver(options);

These Java examples show the ChromeDriver API shape; other Selenium language bindings expose corresponding browser options with language-specific syntax. Selenium’s Chrome-specific functionality guide also documents installing a WebExtension. Match Chrome and ChromeDriver major versions, or use paired Chrome for Testing binaries to reduce version mismatch issues.

One Selenium-specific limitation matters if a test expects normal service-worker shutdown: ChromeDriver attaches a debugger to service workers, and Chrome documents that this can prevent workers from stopping automatically. Chrome also notes that some testing frameworks, including Selenium, may keep workers from terminating normally. Avoid using automatic worker termination as the sole signal that extension behavior is correct.

Run extension tests headlessly

Headless support is mode- and framework-specific. Chrome’s extension end-to-end guide says to use --headless=new for unattended testing and explains that the old headless mode does not support loading extensions. The Puppeteer tutorial likewise says to consider the new headless mode outside development. For Playwright, use the Chromium channel workflow described in its extension guide for headless runs, or run headed. Do not assume a headless flag that works with one framework or binary works with another.

When a test passes headed but fails in CI, first confirm the browser binary, framework-specific extension setup, and headless mode together. If your existing setup cannot load the extension headlessly, run headed in an environment that supports a display rather than silently dropping the extension from the test.

Open extension pages and identify the service worker

Extension pages use URLs in the form chrome-extension://<id>/index.html. Chrome’s testing guide describes setting a fixed extension ID when tests need a stable origin or must open extension pages. Use the test’s actual extension ID and page path; the sample URL is a pattern, not a universal address.

Puppeteer’s example finds a service-worker target by type and URL, then obtains the worker. Narrow the predicate for your extension, especially if the browser loads more than one extension. Playwright provides its own service-worker access through its persistent-context workflow. In Selenium, the documented service-worker access limitation means opening an extension page and running code there may be a more practical route when direct worker evaluation is needed.

Make assertions reliable and user-centered

  1. Trigger the behavior as a user would. Navigate to a page, click the relevant control, or open the extension UI through the tested workflow.
  2. Wait for a meaningful outcome. Wait for a visible element, changed text, navigation, or another explicit condition rather than using a fixed delay as the only synchronization.
  3. Assert the result the user relies on. Prefer page effects or rendered extension UI over internal data structures when they answer the test question.
  4. Use extension-context access selectively. Inspect a worker or extension page only when the test specifically needs to verify behavior that cannot be established through a user-visible result.
  5. Close the browser reliably. Put cleanup in a finally block or framework teardown so failures do not leave browser processes or state behind.

The Puppeteer tutorial cautions that sharing one browser across many tests can reduce isolation and allow one test to affect another. Use a fresh browser or context where the framework and extension setup allow it, and make any deliberate reuse explicit.

Troubleshoot common failures

Symptom Likely cause Fix
The extension does not appear in the test browser. Wrong path, missing build output, or a loading mechanism from another framework. Check that the unpacked path contains manifest.json, or provide a valid CRX using the framework’s documented mechanism. Use an absolute path while diagnosing.
Extension loading fails only in headless CI. Old headless mode or unsupported framework/browser combination. Use Chrome’s --headless=new guidance or the Playwright Chromium channel workflow as applicable; verify the exact browser binary and framework docs.
Selenium cannot start Chrome. Chrome and ChromeDriver major versions differ. Align the major versions or use paired Chrome for Testing binaries.
The service worker never stops, or a shutdown-based assertion hangs. Automation debugger attachment can alter normal worker lifecycle, especially in ChromeDriver. Assert the functional result instead of requiring worker termination; account for framework lifecycle behavior.
The test waits for the wrong service worker. Predicate assumes a sample filename, or more than one worker matches. Match the actual extension ID and worker URL or another specific property.
Tests pass alone but fail in a suite. Reused browser state or cross-test interference. Isolate browser/context state and ensure teardown runs after both success and failure.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I test a Chrome extension in a normal incognito window?

These setups launch a browser controlled by the test framework and load the extension explicitly; they do not depend on enabling it in a manually configured incognito profile.

Do extension end-to-end tests replace unit tests?

No. They verify browser integration and user-facing behavior; focused unit tests remain useful for extension logic that does not require a real browser.
