The Free option comes with lower message limits and may reduce access to some tools; paid plans cost more. Ads and availability vary by region and account eligibility.
Turn off ads on ChatGPT Free
If your account has the Ads-Free option, open ChatGPT and follow the controls described in OpenAI’s Ads in ChatGPT Help Center article:
- Open Settings.
- Select Ads controls.
- Choose the option to change your plan for an ad-free experience.
- Select the reduced-message-limits option and confirm.
Labels and availability can vary. The option is not guaranteed for every account: OpenAI says its ads test began in the United States on February 9, 2026, and is rolling out gradually to eligible users in selected regions. If you do not see Ads controls or an Ads-Free choice, your account may not be eligible.
What the Free Ads-Free option changes
It removes ads but also reduces message limits and may remove access to features such as image generation or deep research. OpenAI does not establish one fixed limit or feature set for every account in its help article, so check the option shown in your account. If you reach a usage limit, OpenAI says you may be offered a choice to upgrade or return to the ad-supported Free experience.

Personalized ads, Temporary Chats and ad-free plans are different
Turning off ad personalization is not the same as turning off ads. OpenAI says personalization controls affect which ads are selected; they do not remove ads. The Ads-Free Free option is the setting that removes them, with the usage and feature tradeoffs described above.
OpenAI says ads are displayed below responses, labeled, and do not influence ChatGPT’s answers. Temporary Chats do not show ads, according to the Help Center, but using that chat mode is not a permanent account-level ad-free plan.

- Want to stay with ChatGPT without paying? Use Ads-Free Free if your account offers it and its reduced limits and tool access suit your needs.
- Want ChatGPT without ads and without choosing the reduced-limit Free option? OpenAI says Plus and Pro are ad-free; compare their current limits, features and prices before subscribing.
- Prefer a free ad-free alternative? Anthropic says Claude will remain ad-free, but its Free tier has limited usage. Check that Claude is available where you live.
- Need more usage in Claude? Compare Claude Pro’s current regional price and features with your needs; the ad-free commitment is Anthropic’s stated policy.
