You can use ChatGPT by messaging OpenAI’s verified 1-800-CHATGPT WhatsApp contact if your WhatsApp number’s country code is eligible in the European Economic Area (EEA), or by calling 1-800-242-8478 from a U.S. or Canadian number in a supported country. Neither route requires a ChatGPT account. WhatsApp availability is rolling out by country code and has usage limits; U.S. and Canadian callers currently get 30 minutes of calls per month free, though standard carrier charges may apply.
Can I still use ChatGPT on WhatsApp?
Yes, according to OpenAI’s current English Help Center guidance, ChatGPT is available again on WhatsApp in the EEA. The contact is the verified 1-800-CHATGPT account at +1-800-242-8478. You can message it without a ChatGPT account. Eligibility depends on the country code associated with your WhatsApp number, availability may roll out gradually, and usage limits apply; OpenAI does not state a WhatsApp usage allowance in that guidance. This is a change from the earlier shutdown notice, not evidence of worldwide access. On October 21, 2025, OpenAI announced that WhatsApp access would end after January 15, 2026, citing a policy and terms change from WhatsApp. The current Help Center subsequently reported that access was available again in the EEA. How do I call ChatGPT?
- From a U.S. or Canadian phone number, while in a supported country, call 1-800-242-8478 (1-800-CHATGPT).
- Speak to ChatGPT when prompted. You do not need to sign in or have a ChatGPT account.
- For clearer voice conversations, choose a quiet place. OpenAI says background noise can trigger unintended responses; headphones or earphones may help reduce interruptions, but they are optional.
OpenAI’s phone instructions do not provide a country-by-country list of supported locations, so the number should not be assumed to work from every country. If the service is unavailable, OpenAI points users to the ChatGPT app or chatgpt.com. OpenAI Help Center: 1-800-ChatGPT

What is the ChatGPT phone number—and is it OpenAI support?
1-800-CHATGPT is 1-800-242-8478. It is the consumer ChatGPT access service for WhatsApp messaging and phone conversations. It is not the same as OpenAI’s separate AI phone support service, which answers routine product and troubleshooting questions.

OpenAI lists these separate AI phone support numbers: U.S. and Canada, 1-888-GPT-0090 or 1-888-478-0090; Australia, (61) 1-800-298-478. That support agent cannot submit reports, connect callers to a live agent, initiate an escalation or account review, or guarantee follow-up. What happens to call recordings and transcripts?
OpenAI says calls and transcripts for 1-800-CHATGPT may be stored and reviewed for a limited period for safety and abuse prevention. It also says these phone conversations are associated with the phone number used to call. This describes the 1-800-CHATGPT phone service; it should not be read as a statement about all ChatGPT conversations or about the separate AI phone support line. OpenAI Help Center: 1-800-ChatGPT

Can I transfer my WhatsApp chats to ChatGPT?
When announcing the 2026 transition, OpenAI advised users to link a ChatGPT account through the WhatsApp contact before January 15, 2026. It said linking could associate the phone number with the account and make past WhatsApp conversations appear in ChatGPT history. OpenAI also warned that conversations would not transfer automatically after that date and that WhatsApp does not support chat exports. OpenAI’s October 21, 2025 announcement attributed the earlier end of WhatsApp access to a policy and terms change from WhatsApp. In that same announcement, OpenAI said more than 50 million people had chatted, created, and learned with ChatGPT on WhatsApp in 2025. That number is OpenAI’s own reported figure, not an independently audited count. The later EEA availability update means the shutdown announcement should be understood as a dated transition notice, not as a statement of current availability everywhere.
