Use app-store data as a structured evidence base, not as a single download number. Start with first-party analytics for apps you own, define the market question and denominator, segment by source and territory, connect acquisition to retention and revenue, then add clearly labeled third-party estimates for competitors. The result is a defensible view of demand, channel quality and market opportunity.
1. Start with a decision, not a dashboard
Write the decision your analysis must support before opening App Store Connect or Google Play reports. A useful question has a population, period, metric and action attached.
- Which discovery source appears to produce the strongest product-page conversion?
- Which territories justify localization or a launch investment?
- Was a product-page change associated with a conversion change?
- Do users from one source or territory retain, subscribe or purchase at different rates?
These are hypotheses, not causal conclusions. A dashboard can show that two measures moved together; it cannot by itself prove that a campaign, country or design change caused the movement.
2. Map the acquisition funnel and its denominators
For an Apple app, examine impressions, unique impressions, product-page views, downloads and conversion by source. App Store Connect identifies sources such as App Store Search, App Store Browse, app referrers, web referrers and campaign links. Territory and device filters let you compare markets and hardware segments.

Always write the formula beside a reported rate. For example: “Search conversion = downloads and pre-orders attributed to Search ÷ unique-device Search impressions, 1–31 March.” Do not silently substitute page views for unique impressions or total downloads for first-time downloads.
Keep attribution comparable
Campaign links can support channel comparisons, but attribution rules and look-back windows matter. Use the same link setup, date range and source definitions for every channel. If one channel is measured by impressions and another by sessions, present separate series rather than ranking them.
3. Use App Store Connect for owned-app evidence
App Store Connect is the primary source for apps your account publishes or can access. Its analytics include acquisition, sales, proceeds, paying users, usage, subscriptions, cohorts and, for eligible categories and business models, peer benchmarks.
Segment the data
Build a repeatable export with these dimensions where available:
- Store and territory.
- Discovery source or campaign.
- Device type.
- Download date and cohort window.
- Business model, such as paid, subscription or in-app purchase.
- App version or product-page treatment.
A territory with high conversion may reflect better localization, a different acquisition mix, pricing, product fit or simply different data availability. Treat the result as a lead for interviews, pricing analysis or experiments—not as proof of a single explanation.
Connect acquisition to value
Compare proceeds, paying users, subscription starts and subscription lifecycle events by source or cohort when those measures are enabled. A channel with lower download volume can be more valuable if its users retain or pay at higher rates. Report sales and proceeds separately: proceeds reflect the amount after applicable adjustments shown by the platform, while sales describe the transaction value.

Use cohorts instead of snapshots
Follow groups by download date, acquisition source or offer-start date. Choose a fixed observation window—such as day 7 or day 30—and apply it to every cohort. Do not compare a complete 30-day cohort with a cohort that is only three days old.
4. Export data for analysis and auditability
Download Analytics reports for a spreadsheet or warehouse, and use Apple’s Analytics Reports API when recurring offline analysis is worthwhile. Preserve the raw export, report name, extraction date, time zone and metric definition in a data dictionary.

- Record the business question and the exact numerator and denominator.
- Export the smallest set of dimensions needed to answer it.
- Normalize dates, currencies, territories and app identifiers without changing the raw values.
- Calculate rates only after validating that both sides of the formula cover the same period and attribution scope.
- Save a versioned summary with filters and exclusions so another analyst can reproduce it.
Some metrics require a particular app feature or a minimum number of events or downloads. Apple states that certain App Store metrics become available after at least five first-time downloads or pre-orders; this is an availability threshold, not a market-size statistic.
5. Treat privacy limits and missing values correctly
Usage and App Clip measures depend on users opting in to share diagnostics and usage data. Apple also applies minimum thresholds to some source and segment reports. A blank, grouped or suppressed value does not mean zero activity.
- Label suppressed segments as “not available because of privacy or threshold rules,” not zero.
- Avoid publishing a rate from a tiny denominator that the platform has rounded or withheld.
- When comparing markets, state whether opt-in coverage and thresholds may differ.
- Do not infer inactivity from missing usage events.
These constraints can change which questions are answerable. Design a fallback, such as combining a longer date range or reporting a broader territory, before you begin.
6. Add Google Play data with a documentation caveat
Google Play reporting can support acquisition, country, retained-installer, buyer and revenue-per-user analyses. Buyer measures require the appropriate financial permissions. However, the Google acquisition documentation commonly encountered for these concepts explicitly describes a legacy report removed from the console in 2020. Use it to understand metric ideas, not as current UI instructions. Verify the present Play Console labels and export options before documenting a procedure for a team.

Keep Google and Apple series separate when definitions differ. A retained installer, an Apple cohort user and an active device are not automatically equivalent populations. State the platform, country set, cohort window and revenue definition in every chart.
7. Estimate competitors without presenting guesses as facts
Your console data describes your app, not the whole category. Competitor analysis requires public listing observations or an app-intelligence provider. Third-party figures are modeled estimates, so identify the provider, report period, store coverage, geography, counting basis and methodology.
For example, the reviewed Sensor Tower Mobile App Insights methodology excerpt describes estimates for Apple App Store and Google Play data and counts downloads per Apple or Google account for its report period. That does not establish actual publisher-reported downloads, universal accuracy or applicability to another year, category or vendor.

Use competitor estimates for directional ranking, share-of-voice questions and hypothesis generation. Avoid false precision such as claiming an exact market share when the inputs are ranges or estimates.

8. Compare alternatives on matching axes
Before comparing apps, channels or platforms, align all of the following:
- Store, country or region.
- Start and end dates, plus update cadence.
- Funnel stage and denominator.
- Cohort window and attribution rules.
- Business model and revenue definition.
- First-party observed data versus third-party estimate.
- Privacy thresholds, opt-in coverage and grouped values.
If an axis cannot be aligned, show the series separately and explain the mismatch. A neat chart with incompatible definitions is less useful than two plainly labeled charts.

9. A practical analysis template
- Question: “Should we localize the product page for Germany?”
- Evidence: Compare German impressions, unique impressions, page views, first-time downloads, conversion, day-30 retention and proceeds with a matched control group of similar territories.
- Checks: Confirm the same dates, device mix, campaign treatment, pricing and privacy availability.
- Interpretation: Describe associations and plausible explanations; do not claim localization caused the difference without an experiment.
- Action: Run a controlled product-page test or qualitative research, then revisit the same cohort measures.
10. Troubleshooting common analysis failures
The conversion rate does not match your spreadsheet
Check whether you used unique-device impressions, included pre-orders and kept total downloads distinct from first-time downloads. Also confirm that source filters and dates match.
A competitor’s number looks much higher than yours
Check whether the competitor figure is an estimate covering both stores or more countries, while yours is first-party data for one store. Compare definitions before comparing values.
A usage segment is empty
Review opt-in requirements and minimum thresholds. Treat unavailable data as unknown, and widen the cohort or territory only if that still answers the question.
A Google Play tutorial does not match the console
The legacy acquisition report documentation is not a reliable current UI guide. Use the current Play Console help for navigation and retain the older page only for conceptual definitions.
Revenue totals disagree
Separate sales, proceeds, in-app-purchase revenue and subscription measures. Check currency, refunds, time zone, taxes and whether the report uses transaction date or event date.

Store analytics should remain your quantitative source. Screenshots are useful for recording how a listing, price, review summary or product-page treatment appeared on a given date. If you capture pages manually, record the URL, timestamp, viewport, device setting and any consent interaction so the evidence is interpretable.

12. Cost, reliability and governance
- Prefer first-party exports for decisions about your own app; they are closest to the underlying events.
- Schedule API downloads after reporting windows close, and retain raw files for audit.
- Document retries, partial exports, time zones and currency conversion.
- Use estimates to prioritize investigation, not to manufacture precise market shares.
- Limit access to revenue and buyer reports to authorized team members.
A sound market-research brief therefore contains the question, definitions, filters, source type, privacy caveats, calculation method, uncertainty and proposed next test. That record is more valuable than a single headline number.
