To send a file directly to a Mac, the Android phone must support Quick Share with AirDrop: set the Mac’s AirDrop visibility to Everyone for 10 minutes, send from Quick Share, then accept the AirDrop notification. If your phone is not compatible, use Quick Share’s QR-code option to download the files through a browser instead.
Choose a transfer method
There are two ways to send from Android to Mac. Direct transfer relies on a compatible Android model and the Mac’s AirDrop receiving settings. The QR-code route works as a browser download and is the documented alternative when direct interoperability is unavailable.
| Transfer method | Android compatibility | Internet | What the Mac user does | Availability and limits |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Direct Quick Share to AirDrop | Only supported Android models; availability can vary by region, carrier, device, and rollout. Check the exact model on Google’s compatibility page. | Google’s instructions do not specify an internet requirement for this direct route. | Set AirDrop to Everyone for 10 minutes and accept the incoming AirDrop notification. | No transfer caps or expiry for this route are stated in Google’s cited instructions. |
| Quick Share QR code and browser | Documented alternative for phones without direct AirDrop interoperability. | Both devices need internet access. | Scan the QR code, open the Google webpage, and download the files. | Files are available for 24 hours; Google documents up to 10 GB per 24 hours, 1,000 files per session, and 20 Apple-device recipients per session. |
Send directly to your Mac with AirDrop
- On the Mac: Open AirDrop receiving settings and set visibility to Everyone for 10 minutes. The exact settings path can vary by macOS version.
- On Android: Open the photo, video, or file, tap Share, then Quick Share. Some devices may still display the former name, Nearby Share.
- Select the Mac when it appears among nearby devices.
- On the Mac, accept the AirDrop notification. The transfer then proceeds.
Check that your Android model is supported
Direct sharing is not available on every Android phone. Google’s support documentation lists Pixel 8a or later and certain Samsung, Oppo, OnePlus, Vivo, Xiaomi, Honor, Transsion, and Motorola devices. Google’s live compatibility page identifies selected models, including Pixel, Galaxy, Xiaomi, OnePlus, OPPO, HONOR, and vivo phones. Because support can change and availability varies, check your exact model on Google’s current compatibility page rather than relying on a brand name alone.
Use a QR code if direct sharing is unavailable
- On Android, open Quick Share and select Use QR code.
- Scan the displayed code with the Mac’s camera or a QR scanner.
- Open the link in the Mac’s default browser. The transfer starts on the Google webpage; download and save the delivered files from there.
This route requires internet access on both devices. Google says the files are end-to-end encrypted, uploaded to Google servers rather than your personal Google Drive storage, and available to download for 24 hours. Google documents a limit of 10 GB per 24 hours, 1,000 files in one session, and 20 receiving Apple devices per session. Mobile data charges may apply if either device uses cellular data.

If your Mac does not appear or the transfer fails
- Confirm compatibility: Direct AirDrop interoperability depends on the exact Android model and may vary by region, carrier, and software rollout. Use the current Google device list; choose QR sharing if your phone is unsupported.
- Check the Mac’s AirDrop setting: Set receiving visibility to Everyone for 10 minutes, then try selecting the Mac again. Accept the notification on the Mac to complete a direct transfer.
- For direct discovery: Keep the devices nearby and make sure Wi-Fi is enabled. Google’s general Quick Share troubleshooting also suggests Bluetooth on both devices and bringing the devices within 1 foot (30 cm); those are general recommendations, not guaranteed Mac-specific fixes.
- For QR sharing: Check that both devices have internet access and open the QR link in the Mac’s browser. The browser route does not rely on the Mac appearing in the nearby-device list.
- For Samsung phones: Samsung users may need to enable Share with Apple devices in Quick Share settings.
- If the phone still says Nearby Share: Google says the feature continues to work on devices that retain the former name. Follow the current Quick Share steps where available.
- Other general Android checks: Google’s Quick Share troubleshooting guidance suggests toggling Airplane mode, checking Location on Android 12 or earlier, and restarting the device. These are broad troubleshooting suggestions and are not established as fixes specific to Android-to-Mac sharing.
Why Nearby Share is called Quick Share
Nearby Share is the former name of Android’s feature; Google now calls it Quick Share. Google announced the initial AirDrop interoperability rollout for the Pixel 10 family on November 20, 2025, but that announcement is a launch milestone, not a complete or lasting compatibility list. For current support, check Google’s compatibility page and Quick Share instructions.
