Connect it to the source, run an HDMI cable from the adapter to the TV, monitor, or projector, and select the matching HDMI input. A USB-C-shaped port alone does not guarantee that it can send video.
Check what your device’s port can do
Start with the exact model of the laptop, tablet, phone, or other source device—not just the shape of its connector. Check the manufacturer’s specifications or support page to confirm that the port you plan to use supports external video.
USB-C can carry different signals. Some compatible USB-C sources support HDMI Alt Mode; others send DisplayPort over USB-C and use an adapter to convert that signal to HDMI. These are distinct paths, so match the adapter to the source’s documented capability. HDMI’s USB Type-C guidance notes that manufacturers choose which HDMI features their products support: HDMI Alt Mode. VESA explains that adapters can connect DisplayPort over USB-C to HDMI displays and advises checking for DisplayPort support on the device: VESA’s DisplayPort FAQ.
Microsoft also cautions that the device, port, cable, or dongle may not support the Alternate Mode feature being used. Its USB-C troubleshooting guide describes these compatibility issues.

Choose an adapter for the right signal path
Most HDMI adapters used with computers and mobile devices carry video from the source to an HDMI display. Connect the adapter to the video-output port on the source and the HDMI cable to the display. A display’s HDMI input is not an HDMI output: if you need to bring video from an HDMI source into a computer, you typically need a capture device rather than a standard display adapter.
Before buying, check the adapter maker’s specifications against the source device and the display. Compare the exact video mode—resolution and refresh rate together—and verify any features you need, such as audio, HDR, HDCP for protected content, or charging. A claim such as “4K” alone does not say which refresh rate is supported.

- Source compatibility: Confirm the exact source model supports video over the port you will use.
- Direction: Make sure the adapter is designed to carry video from that source to an HDMI display.
- Display mode: Check the required resolution and refresh rate for the source, adapter, HDMI cable, and display.
- Additional features: Check audio, HDR, HDCP, and HDMI-CEC support where relevant.
- Other ports: If you need to charge a device or connect USB accessories while using HDMI, consider a multiport adapter with the ports you need.
Specifications are model-specific. For example, Belkin lists up to 8K at 60 Hz and 4K at 144 Hz for its Connect USB-C to HDMI 2.1 Adapter AVC013. Those are Belkin’s published maxima for that adapter, not a guarantee that a particular source, cable, and display will support either mode. The product FAQ also lists HBR3, HDR DSC, VRR, HDCP 2.2, and plug-and-play operation; check the Belkin AVC013 support information and the specifications of the rest of your setup.
Apple’s Mac guidance for connecting to HDMI displays lists capabilities by model. It identifies some Mac models that can connect through built-in HDMI at up to 4K and 240 Hz, and says adapters are not supported for those cited combinations. That limitation applies to the arrangements Apple describes, not to every adapter or computer.

Connect the adapter and set up the display
- Confirm the source port. Check that the exact port supports external video and that the adapter supports its video protocol.
- Attach the adapter to the source. For a USB-C-to-HDMI adapter, plug its USB-C connector into the source’s video-capable USB-C port.
- Connect the HDMI cable. Run a cable rated for your desired display mode from the adapter to the TV, monitor, or projector.
- Select the display input. Use the display’s input controls to choose the HDMI port where the cable is connected.
- Adjust display settings if needed. Use the operating system’s display controls to arrange screens or choose a supported resolution and refresh rate.
- Set audio output if sound stays on the source. Choose the HDMI display as the audio output. On a Mac, Apple documents this selection in Sound settings.
- Test features separately. First confirm ordinary video, then check higher refresh rates, HDR, protected streaming, or charging as needed.
Apple also sells a USB-C Digital AV Multiport Adapter for supported Macs and iPads. It connects to an HDMI display while providing USB-A and USB-C charging connections; confirm the exact adapter and device specifications before relying on a particular display mode. Why an HDMI adapter may not work
No picture
- Confirm that the source port supports video output; connector shape is not proof.
- Check that the adapter is connected to the source and is intended for that source-to-display direction.
- Verify that the display is set to the HDMI input used by the cable.
- Check that the source, adapter, cable, and display support a compatible video mode.
- If the device has another documented video-output port, try it.
A USB-C warning or accessory failure
The port, cable, or adapter may not support the required Alternate Mode, or the adapter may be connected to the wrong port. Check the device and accessory specifications, then reconnect using a documented video-capable port.

The picture works, but resolution or refresh rate is lower than expected
Check the supported resolution-and-refresh-rate combination for every part of the connection, including the HDMI cable, then select a mode supported by the complete setup in the operating system’s display controls. A maximum printed on one component does not establish the capability of the full chain.
Video works, but there is no sound
Select the HDMI display as the audio output in system settings and check that the display can play audio. Apple lists audio-output selection as a troubleshooting step for Macs connecting to HDMI displays.

Protected video fails while ordinary video works
Check HDCP support across the source, adapter, cable path, and display. Apple says that protected-content playback on an external display requires an HDCP-compatible display.
The connection is intermittent
Reconnect the adapter and cable, then simplify the path by testing without an external hub or dock. Microsoft identifies hubs and multiple USB-C accessories as possible sources of USB-C connection problems.

Do not assume that getting a picture means every feature is supported. Audio output may need to be selected separately. Protected video can require HDCP-compatible components throughout the connection. Other features, including HDR and HDMI-CEC, also depend on support across the devices and adapter.
HDMI’s page gives examples of HDMI 1.4b features associated with HDMI Alt Mode, including resolutions up to 4K, surround sound, ARC, 3D, CEC, and HDCP 1.4/2.2. These examples are not a promise that every USB-C device or adapter supports them; verify the features listed for your particular products.
