An embedded database can give an AI agent durable local state without requiring a separate database service for every read or write. For a straightforward example, the OpenAI Agents SDK can store conversation history in SQLite: use its default in-memory session for temporary state, or provide a database file path to keep session data across process restarts. Conversation history is not automatically a searchable long-term memory system; choose storage and retrieval to match what the agent needs to remember.

Choose what the agent needs to remember

Before selecting a database, identify the state the application needs to retain. These needs are related, but they are not interchangeable:

  • Temporary conversation state: Useful while a process is running, but disposable when it ends.
  • Durable session history: Conversation turns that should remain available after the application restarts.
  • Structured facts: Records the application can retrieve by known fields or identifiers.
  • Searchable documents or knowledge: Content that may need keyword or semantic retrieval to provide relevant context.

The OpenAI Agents SDK documentation shows how to persist session history; it does not define a universal schema for an agent’s long-term memory. Storing turns is persistence, not by itself a retrieval strategy.

Persist an OpenAI Agents SDK session with SQLite

The SDK’s SQLiteSession accepts a session ID and, optionally, a database path. Its default database is :memory:, which is temporary. For history that should survive a process restart, pass a file path, as shown in the SQLite session reference:

from agents import SQLiteSession

session = SQLiteSession("support-ticket-482", db_path="agent_sessions.sqlite")

Here, support-ticket-482 identifies the conversation, while agent_sessions.sqlite is the SQLite database file. The SDK’s documented guidance is: “For persistent storage, provide a file path.” See the Sessions guide for how sessions fit into agent use.

Choose a stable session ID

Use an identifier whose scope matches the conversation boundary your application intends to preserve—for example, a user, support ticket, or thread. A session ID is a lookup key, not a credential. The SDK’s session documentation warns that the SQLite backend assumes the application trusts the database; the ID does not authenticate a user or authorize access to that session’s history.

Protect the database as application data

Enforce authorization in the application before loading session history. Restrict access to the database file and protect its backups, since they may contain conversation data. Decide how long history should be retained and apply that policy to both the live database and copies.

Use the asynchronous option when it fits your application

The SDK also documents AsyncSQLiteSession for an aiosqlite-based implementation. Consult the advanced SQLite session guide for that approach; choose it when it fits the application’s asynchronous design rather than treating it as a different persistence model.

Know when an embedded database fits

SQLite is a practical fit when the application can own a local database file and the relevant state belongs to that application or deployment. It avoids operating a separate database service for local session reads and writes. SQLite’s guidance on appropriate uses can help assess whether a file-based database suits a broader application workload.

File-backed persistence also means the application must account for the database file as part of its deployment: its location, access controls, retention, and backups. SQLite’s write-ahead logging documentation explains a database operating mode worth reviewing if considering WAL; do not assume that choosing SQLite alone resolves deployment or access requirements.

Move to shared storage when deployment requires it

A local database file becomes a poor fit when independent workers or services must read and update the same session state, or when deployment requirements call for horizontally scalable shared storage. The Agents SDK lists Redis for shared, low-latency sessions, along with SQLAlchemy-, MongoDB-, and Dapr-backed session implementations for other production or cloud-native arrangements. These are options for particular deployment needs, not a reason every agent should use a remote database. See the SDK’s session backend documentation.

Make the decision against the application’s actual requirements rather than an unsupported performance threshold. Consider whether state must be shared across workers, what retrieval the agent needs, which infrastructure the team already operates, and how identity, authorization, retention, and backups will be handled.

Add retrieval for searchable knowledge

If an agent needs to find relevant material in documents or a knowledge collection, session persistence alone may not be enough. Retrieval can require indexing or a separate store. MongoDB’s guide to building AI agents with MongoDB describes an architecture in which an agent can use semantic vector search or full-text search tools according to the task’s context.

That is an alternative retrieval architecture, not evidence that SQLite must be replaced for ordinary conversation history. An application can keep session state and searchable knowledge as distinct concerns, choosing storage for each according to sharing, retrieval, and operational needs. SQLite’s FTS5 documentation describes its full-text search extension, but the need for search does not by itself determine which storage design is right for an agent.

Decide with the workload, not a benchmark claim

The cited documentation establishes implementation choices and trade-offs, not a universal performance ranking or concurrency threshold. To choose, answer these questions for your deployment:

  • Does state need to outlive a process, or only a single run?
  • Must separate workers or services share and update it?
  • Is the agent saving conversation turns, structured facts, searchable documents, or more than one of these?
  • Does the application need keyword search, semantic retrieval, or neither?
  • Who owns database-file access, authorization, retention, and backups?
  • Does the team already operate a suitable shared database backend?

For a single application that needs durable local conversation history, a file-backed SQLite session is a simple starting point. Revisit the design if sharing across workers or searchable knowledge becomes a requirement.
