You can use an AI coding assistant more safely by keeping credentials out of its context, limiting what an agent can access, and supplying secrets only at runtime when a task truly needs them. Do not rely on .gitignore to hide files from an assistant: Git ignore rules control versioning, not what an IDE extension or agent can read.
What an AI coding assistant may see
The assistant may receive more than the text you type into chat. Depending on the product and mode, its context can include open files, project structure, repository content, terminal output, issue or pull-request details, and arguments passed to tools. OWASP’s Secure Coding with AI guidance states: “AI coding assistants send code context (open files, project structure, terminal output) to the model provider’s API.” Check the current product documentation for context collection, retention, and exclusion controls; behavior is not uniform across assistants.
A command-capable agent presents an additional boundary: it can act with privileges available in its environment. Depending on configuration, that may include running commands, accessing files, using network connections, writing to a workspace, or invoking connected tools such as MCP servers. Treat those capabilities as access that must be limited, not as a reason to assume secrets are safe.
Prepare the project before using the assistant
Choose an approved tool and data boundary
Review the assistant’s data-handling terms and settings before sharing source code or project context. For sensitive or regulated work, use the organization-approved enterprise or self-hosted option, or keep that material out of a cloud assistant. OWASP recommends defining which tools are approved and what data categories may be used with them.

Explicitly exclude secret files
Use the assistant’s own context-exclusion or ignore feature for files and folders that should not be included. Consider patterns such as:
.envand.env.**.pemand*.keycredentials.jsonandserviceAccountKey.json- Directories containing credentials, private configuration, or production data
Verify how the specific assistant interprets exclusions, and avoid opening a secret file in the active IDE while the assistant is running. A file can be excluded from Git yet still be readable by an editor extension or local agent.

Restrict agent capabilities
For command-capable tools, enable approval prompts for commands and network access where available. Limit filesystem access to the workspace, restrict write permissions and connected tools, and use a sandbox or disposable VM/container for untrusted tasks. Remove production credentials from that environment. Review and pin MCP servers, and protect repository instructions and configuration files: malicious tool descriptions or changed instructions can influence later agent actions.
Keep credentials out of prompts and project context
Use a placeholder such as API_KEY in examples, and redact credentials from error messages, logs, screenshots, and chat. Do not paste a real key merely to make a code example work. Also avoid putting secrets in terminal commands while the assistant can inspect terminal context; command history and captured output can expose them.

Environment variables are not automatically hidden from an agent. If an agent can inspect its process environment or run commands with access to it, it may be able to read those values. Keep credentials outside assistant-readable project files and do not treat a vault as protection against an agent that is authorized to retrieve a secret.
Supply access only when the task needs it
If the task genuinely requires authentication, design the workflow so a trusted runtime or secret broker supplies the credential during execution, rather than placing it in a prompt or source file. Use the narrowest permissions and shortest lifetime that will work, and avoid granting an assistant or its environment access to production credentials when a test credential or isolated environment will do.

GitHub’s documentation describes a product-specific option for GitHub Copilot cloud agent: data and tokens it should not access can be kept in GitHub Actions variables or secrets. GitHub also documents using fresh GitHub-hosted runners or ephemeral self-hosted runners and minimum permissions for workflow configuration. These protections apply to the documented cloud-agent workflow; they do not establish that local IDE extensions or other terminal agents have the same isolation. Check current documentation and plan settings before relying on a feature.

Run secret scanning and relevant dependency and security checks on generated changes, then have a person review them. Give particular attention to build scripts, CI workflows, and deployment configuration, where a change can alter what credentials are exposed or what code runs with elevated permissions. GitHub documents secret scanning with Copilot agent mode and compatible MCP tools, but scanning is a backstop: it does not make it safe to expose a credential to an assistant.

If you exposed an API key or other credential
- Revoke or rotate it immediately in the service that issued it. Do not wait to establish whether it was used.
- Check access and usage logs for unexpected activity, and investigate any suspicious use.
- Clean up copies and repository history if the credential was committed, and notify affected collaborators. History cleanup is remediation, not a replacement for revocation; a copied key may remain usable even after the commit is removed.
- Follow your incident-response process and any applicable privacy or breach-notification requirements.
