Have an AI agent write or run a short Playwright script, then set the browser context’s viewport and locale before navigating to the page. Playwright—not the AI agent—provides the browser controls that determine the screen dimensions, locale signals, and screenshot capture.
What the viewport and locale settings do
A viewport is the browser’s visible page area, specified in CSS pixels. Set its width and height to reproduce a target layout, such as a desktop or narrow mobile-sized view. Playwright documents a consistent default viewport of 1280 × 720; specifying your own dimensions makes the intended capture explicit. Playwright BrowserType documentation
Locale emulation changes browser signals and formatting behavior: it affects navigator.language, the Accept-Language request header, and number and date formatting rules. It does not guarantee that a site will translate its content or show a particular regional version; that depends on the site. Playwright Emulation documentation
Capture a page with Playwright JavaScript
Ask your AI agent to create or execute a script like this. Install Playwright in the project first, and replace the example URL, dimensions, locale, and output filename with your own values.

Use fullPage: true when you need the page beyond the initially visible area:

Playwright also provides page.setViewportSize():
await page.setViewportSize({ width: 1440, height: 900 });Prefer setting the viewport on browser.newContext() before navigation when possible. Playwright cautions that many websites do not expect a phone-sized page to change size after loading. Changing the viewport also resets the screen size; if you need screen size and viewport to be controlled separately, configure the context’s screen and viewport settings. Choose the capture area and image scale
- Visible viewport: omit
fullPageto capture the currently visible area. - Entire page: set
fullPage: trueto capture the full scrollable page. - Image scale: Playwright’s Page API documents screenshot scale options. The Playwright MCP screenshot tool also documents CSS-pixel and device-pixel scaling; device-pixel output can produce a higher-density image. Keep the output path descriptive and include useful inputs such as locale and dimensions in the filename. If visual correctness matters, inspect the resulting image in your workflow rather than assuming that a successful script captured the intended layout or language.
Ways an AI agent can run the capture
The direct Playwright API is suitable when you want a script with explicit context settings and capture steps. If your agent environment already exposes them, Playwright also documents screenshot commands in its agent CLI and a screenshot tool in its MCP server. The CLI supports viewport, element, and full-page captures with filename and image-type options; the MCP screenshot tool documents viewport, element, and full-page targets as well as image scaling. Their exact availability depends on the runtime and installed version, so check the relevant interface before relying on a command or tool. Troubleshooting
- The page is in the wrong language: confirm the locale was set on the browser context before navigation. Locale changes browser language signals and formatting, but the site may not localize based on those signals alone.
- The layout does not match the requested size: verify the numeric width and height in the context’s
viewport. Set them before navigation so responsive behavior can take effect during page load. - The image only shows the top portion: that is the default viewport capture. Set
fullPage: truefor the full scrollable page. - The saved image is missing or unexpected: check the screenshot path and format options, then inspect the output. The documented example saves to the path supplied in the screenshot options.
- A CLI or MCP instruction is unavailable: confirm that the chosen agent runtime exposes that interface and check its installed version’s documentation. The direct Page API remains an option when the environment can run Playwright JavaScript.

Can an AI agent take the screenshot without Playwright?
Yes, if its environment provides another browser automation interface or a screenshot tool such as an MCP server. The Playwright example uses Playwright as the browser-control layer; an agent can generate or run that code.

Does setting `fr-FR` translate every website into French?
No. It changes browser locale signals and formatting behavior. Whether a site translates or selects regional content is determined by that site.
