Give an AI agent the page URL and the visual brief, have it inspect the page, create and export a social card, then add the image URL to the page’s Open Graph metadata and test the deployed preview. The key is to make the agent work from the page’s actual content—not just its URL—and to verify that the final image is publicly reachable and survives platform-specific crops.
What the agent needs to do
A social preview image, also called an Open Graph image, link preview image, or social card, is the image a platform may show when someone shares a page. It is one part of a preview; the page title and description also come from metadata. The Open Graph protocol describes how a web page can become a rich object in a social graph and specifies core properties for each page: og:title, og:type, og:image, and og:url (Open Graph protocol).
A useful agent workflow has five stages: inspect the real page, select an image-making method, create a clear card, publish it at a public URL, and check the actual share preview. An agent can help with the work, but a generated file alone does not ensure that a social platform can fetch or display it.
Choose a creation method
| Method | Best suited to | Trade-offs to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Prompt-based image generation using page content and screenshots | Original illustration or a less templated visual | Check brand consistency, repeatability, editability, and how much human review the result needs. |
| Deterministic code-generated layout | Repeatable cards, consistent typography, template-driven sites, and repository workflows | Consider design flexibility, template maintenance, and how reliably the agent can populate structured fields. |
| HTML template rendered to an image | Data-driven layouts, exact composition, and teams already comfortable with web design | Account for browser-rendering setup, available fonts, output integration, and maintenance. |
These are practical distinctions among documented approaches, not benchmarked speed or quality rankings. OpenGraph.io describes using URL metadata, extracted page content, and screenshots as context for image generation; its generator describes 16:9, 1:1, 9:16, and 4:1 scenarios. Those are vendor-described options, not guarantees that every platform accepts or displays those proportions. OSIG describes a typed canvas with text, image, and rectangle layers and PNG or JPEG export for repository or publishing workflows. AgenticFlow documents rendering HTML into a static image in a headless browser, including for social-card use cases (OpenGraph.io MCP, OpenGraph.io AI Image Generator, OSIG, AgenticFlow HTML-to-image documentation).

Give the agent page context and a specific brief
- Provide the exact public page URL. Ask the agent to inspect the title, description, headings, existing Open Graph and Twitter metadata, and—if it helps—an image or screenshot. Have it base the card on the page’s actual subject, not on a guess from the URL.
- Specify the audience and purpose. Say what the page is about, who should recognize it in a feed, and what the card should communicate. Ask the agent to distinguish verified page facts from any visual concept it proposes.
- Set design constraints. Request one clear subject, brief readable copy, the brand colors and authorized logo if applicable, generous space around text, and a wide social-card composition unless you have a target platform with different requirements. Ask for the intended pixel dimensions and file format.
- Choose how it will be made. Ask for original artwork when the card needs illustration, structured layers when consistency matters, or an HTML template when the design is essentially a data-filled layout.
- Require a reviewable deliverable. Ask the agent to return the exported asset, its dimensions and format, the public asset URL or repository path, and the metadata tags to add. Do not treat an unreviewed generation as ready to publish.
For an agent that needs to inspect page metadata, extracted content, and screenshots as generation context, OpenGraph.io documents an MCP workflow that includes fetching page information, capturing screenshots, generating and iterating images, inspecting sessions, and exporting assets. These are capabilities described by the service itself, not independent performance findings (OpenGraph.io MCP).
Export, publish, and connect the image to the page
Put the final image in the site’s asset pipeline or another stable public location, then point the page’s metadata at the deployed image URL. An asset stored only on a developer’s machine, behind authentication, or in a protected directory cannot serve as a public share image. LinkedIn’s guidance specifically warns that a blocked crawler or protected image URL can prevent retrieval (LinkedIn shareability guidance).
The Open Graph protocol’s required properties include the image URL, and it defines optional image properties such as MIME type, width, height, an HTTPS alternate URL, and alternative text. Example tags for a public page might look like this; replace the example values with the page’s real information and deployed asset URL:

Also supply an accurate description where the target platform uses it. LinkedIn’s example calls for og:title, og:image, og:description, and og:url. Check the current documentation of the platform you are targeting rather than assuming a single metadata set or image format works identically everywhere.

Size the image for its destination, then check the crop
There is no single image dimension established here as universal across social services. Use the target platform’s current guidance and preview checker, and keep essential copy and visual details away from the edges so they are less likely to be lost to cropping.
LinkedIn’s shareability help page lists a maximum file size of 5 MB, minimum image dimensions of 1200 × 627 pixels, and a recommended 1.91:1 ratio. It also says images narrower than 401 pixels display as thumbnails and that blocked or protected image URLs can prevent retrieval. The page itself says it was last updated two years before the research date of 2026-10-03, so confirm those limits in LinkedIn’s current guidance before relying on them for a release (LinkedIn shareability guidance).

Review before you publish
- Confirm that the card text names and represents the page accurately.
- Check that the main image is relevant and that you have rights to use it.
- View the image at small preview size; confirm that its text remains legible.
- Verify that brand assets are authorized and that important content has room around it for cropping.
- Check the exported dimensions and file size against the target platform’s current documentation.
- Open the image URL without a logged-in session and confirm it is public and stable.
- Inspect the deployed page source and confirm its tags point to the final asset.
- Test the final public page in a platform preview or audit tool after deployment.
The reviewed creation and metadata documentation explains mechanics; it does not establish a validated quality-control protocol or clear legal rights for generated output. Human review remains necessary.
Or skip the browser setup
If the agent needs a clean screenshot of the source page as context, ScreenshotNeo can return a screenshot or PDF from one GET request. Its API accepts the page URL, can remove cookie and consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture, and reports page verdict and billing information in response headers. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for AI agents.

Troubleshooting
The generated card does not match the page
The agent may have inferred the subject from the URL or received too little content. Supply the public page URL and ask it to inspect the title, description, headings, and relevant page imagery before generating another version. Correct any inaccurate copy yourself before publishing.
The image appears blank or is missing from a share preview
Check the deployed page’s og:image value, then open that exact URL without authentication. Confirm the file exists at the public URL and that the crawler is not blocked from retrieving it. Re-run the platform preview check after deployment.
Recommended Free Tools
The image is cropped or rendered as a thumbnail
Compare the export with the destination platform’s current image guidance. Keep text and key content away from the edges, and check the preview at its displayed size. LinkedIn’s cited guidance says images narrower than 401 pixels display as thumbnails; verify the current rule before using that threshold.

The card looks inconsistent across pages
Move repeated elements into a structured template or deterministic layer-based layout. Keep page-specific fields—such as title and image—separate from shared typography, colors, and spacing so each card is populated consistently.
The HTML-rendered card uses the wrong font or layout
Check that the headless browser can load the required fonts and assets, that the template has the intended viewport and dimensions, and that the rendered file is integrated into the published asset pipeline. Recheck the exported image, not only the HTML template in a local browser.
What an image-selection study does—and does not—show
A 2021 study, “Automatically Selecting Striking Images for Social Cards,” reports Precision@1 of 0.83 on NEWSROOM news articles and 0.78 on PLOS ONE scholarly articles. Those figures describe an automatic image-selection task on the named datasets; they are not a measure of generative AI’s ability to create social cards or a general quality score for a finished preview (study abstract).

Does an AI-generated image automatically become the page’s social preview?
No. The generated asset must be published at a reachable URL, referenced by the page’s metadata, and checked in the destination platform’s preview tool.
Should I use the same social image dimensions for every platform?
Not without checking the target platform’s current documentation. The available guidance does not establish one universal size that every service displays identically.
Can an AI agent decide whether an image is legally safe to publish?
The described tools do not establish rights clearance for generated output. Review the image, source assets, and permissions before publication.
