Yes—an AI agent can open your staging site, follow a specified user journey, and save screenshots at useful checkpoints. Give it the staging URL, exact actions, the visible result you expect, the viewport or breakpoints to check, and descriptive filenames. Have it use structured page state—such as an accessibility snapshot—to find and operate controls, then use screenshots to review appearance. A screenshot shows what the page looked like; it does not, by itself, prove that the whole flow passed.
Plan the capture so the evidence answers a question
Before choosing a browser tool, define what the agent should demonstrate. A request like “take screenshots of staging” leaves important decisions open: which route, what actions, what state, and what counts as a useful capture.
Specify the site, journey, state, and capture points
- URL and route: give the staging origin and the exact page or route to visit.
- Actions: describe the user journey in order, such as opening a menu, submitting a form, or selecting a filter.
- Expected visible state: say what should be on screen at each checkpoint. Avoid asking the agent to infer whether an outcome is correct.
- Viewport: name the dimensions or responsive breakpoints to inspect. If mobile and desktop both matter, request both explicitly.
- Capture extent: say whether you need the current viewport, one component, or the full scrollable page.
- Output and scope: choose a filename pattern and image format, and say whether the agent should only collect evidence or also fix defects and repeat checks.
For example, you could ask: “Open the staging site at [staging URL]. Visit [route], complete [user flow], and check for [expected visible state]. At each named checkpoint, capture [viewport dimensions] and save as [route]-[viewport]-[state].png. Report the route, actions performed, and any console errors. Do not say a check passed unless you observed the expected state.” This is a prompt template, not a guarantee that a particular agent supports every requested action.

Microsoft’s VS Code browser-tools guidance similarly recommends specifying the app or URL, journey, expected result, edge cases or viewport sizes, whether to fix issues, and whether to repeat checks.

Choose the browser runtime that fits your project
Browser agents do not all use the same commands or session model. Pick the integration that can reach the staging environment and provide the state and evidence you need; do not assume one tool’s syntax applies to another.

Decide based on where the app runs, how the agent connects, whether it needs authentication or other existing state, and whether execution should be local or hosted. Each option has its own setup and availability.
Use page state to operate controls, then screenshots to inspect appearance
A screenshot is useful for judging layout, visual regressions, chart or canvas appearance, and documenting a bug. It is a poor substitute for structured page information when the agent must identify a button or understand page content. Use an accessibility snapshot or the equivalent structured state to locate controls, interact with them, and confirm that the expected state appeared; use a screenshot to see how that state looks.

playwright-cli closeFor a journey, extend that sequence to open → snapshot → interact → snapshot → capture. Take a fresh snapshot after navigation or a meaningful state change: the CLI’s refs correspond to the observed page state, so old refs may no longer identify the intended controls. Follow the selected tool’s own guidance for its interaction commands.
Select the right screenshot extent and resolution
Decide what the reviewer needs to see before capturing. A viewport shot is quick to scan but omits off-screen content. A full-page shot includes scrollable content but can become very tall. A component shot focuses on a dialog, form, or widget, but may leave too little context to identify the page.

Without a filename, it creates a timestamped page-{timestamp} output. High-resolution device-pixel output can make details easier to inspect, but the CLI warns that coordinates then differ from CSS-pixel mouse coordinates. With the Playwright API, the documented basic form is await page.screenshot({ path: 'screenshot.png' });. A locator can capture a component, fullPage: true captures scrollable content, and omitting path returns a buffer for further processing. Plan authentication and staging access deliberately
Do not assume that a browser opened by an agent shares the cookies, storage, or sign-in state of your ordinary browser tab. VS Code documents that its browser agent uses an isolated, ephemeral session by default. Its guidance distinguishes opening that isolated session from sharing an existing page, which carries the tab’s cookies, storage, and sign-in state.
If the flow requires authentication, choose the session arrangement before asking the agent to test it, and follow the credential-handling documentation for your particular platform. Avoid putting secrets in prompts, screenshots, logs, or filenames. There is no universal login or secret-storage recipe across browser providers and staging setups; confirm that you are authorized to access the environment and use the mechanism documented for your deployment.

Use stable names that identify the route, viewport, and state, such as checkout-mobile-error.png or pricing-desktop-loaded.png. For repeated captures or visual comparisons, keep the route, viewport, checkpoint, and relevant state consistent. Pick the format explicitly when the review pipeline requires it; otherwise, the CLI’s default is PNG.

Ask the agent to list each saved file and identify the checkpoint it represents. The report should distinguish the fact that an image was captured from the claim that a flow passed. A pass requires observing the expected state; visual acceptance may require a reviewer or a defined comparison process. VS Code’s documented feedback loop also calls for reviewing reported verification results and code changes, not treating a screenshot as the entire test record.

Troubleshoot common capture problems
The agent cannot reach the staging URL
Check that the URL is correct and that the selected browser runtime can reach the staging environment. A locally accessible development server may not be reachable from a hosted runtime. Verify network access and environment requirements in the provider’s documentation rather than assuming every integration runs in the same network context.

The agent cannot find a control or clicks the wrong one
Ask it to take a fresh accessibility snapshot and use the current refs or structured page state to locate the control. Re-snapshot after navigation or a state change. Avoid relying on screenshot coordinates as the default way to identify controls.
The expected signed-in page does not appear
Check whether the agent is using an isolated session without the existing tab’s cookies or storage. Select the supported shared-page or configured-session approach for your integration, and use its documented credential mechanism.
The screenshot is incomplete or too hard to review
Confirm whether the request needs a viewport, target element, or full-page capture. Use a full-page option when below-the-fold content matters; use a component capture for a focused review while retaining enough surrounding context. If fine detail is illegible, consider a device-pixel capture and account for the CLI’s warning that device-pixel output changes the relationship to CSS-pixel coordinates.
The file is missing or has the wrong name or format
Specify a unique filename and supported format in the selected runtime’s screenshot command or API. For the Agent CLI, a missing filename produces a timestamped output, and PNG is the default unless another supported format is selected. Confirm the tool’s output location and current command syntax in its reference.
A screenshot exists, but the test result is unclear
Require the agent to report actions performed, the observed expected state, and any console errors alongside each capture. If it cannot confirm the state, label the capture as evidence collected rather than a passing check, and inspect the page or run a suitable functional check.
