Windows does not include a built-in AirPlay receiver. That means an iPhone or iPad cannot natively mirror its screen to a Windows PC, and pressing Windows logo key + K will not make an Apple TV appear. That shortcut opens Windows’ Miracast wireless-display feature instead.
Windows can still send AirPlay audio through iTunes for Windows to compatible speakers, HomePod speakers, Apple TV, and other AirPlay-enabled devices. For screen mirroring, you need either a compatible third-party AirPlay receiver or a different wireless-display method such as Miracast.
What AirPlay functions work from Windows?
| Task | Windows support | What to use |
|---|---|---|
| Send audio to an AirPlay speaker or Apple TV | Yes | iTunes for Windows |
| Mirror an iPhone or iPad to Windows | Not natively | A compatible third-party AirPlay receiver |
| Mirror Windows to an Apple TV | Not through Windows’ built-in tools | An AirPlay-compatible sender or receiver solution |
| Connect Windows to a Miracast display | Yes, if the PC and display support Miracast | Windows logo key + K |
Apple’s documented AirPlay sender workflow is available on iPhone, iPad, and Mac. On Windows, Apple documents AirPlay speaker output in iTunes rather than native screen mirroring.

Important: iTunes is not Windows’ main Apple media app anymore
Apple now separates its Windows software into several apps:
- Apple Music handles music libraries and Apple Music.
- Apple TV handles movies and television shows.
- Apple Devices handles iPhone and iPad management.
- iTunes remains documented for podcasts and audiobooks and retains Apple’s documented AirPlay speaker-output procedure.
If you are looking specifically for the AirPlay speaker controls described above, use iTunes for Windows. Apple’s current Windows app documentation does not document the same AirPlay speaker procedure in the Apple Music app.
Why Windows logo key + K is not AirPlay
Pressing Windows logo key + K opens Windows’ wireless-display connection panel. The underlying technology is Miracast, not AirPlay.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Therefore, an Apple TV or an AirPlay-only television generally will not appear in that list. It would need to support Miracast as well, or you would need software or hardware that provides a compatible bridge. If Windows reports that an external display must be connected with a cable, the PC may lack Miracast support because of its wireless adapter, graphics hardware, or drivers. That is a Miracast capability problem—not an AirPlay error.

Use Windows 11’s built-in wireless display feature instead
This option is useful when the receiving display or PC supports Miracast. It does not turn Windows into an AirPlay receiver.
Install Wireless Display on Windows 11
On Windows 11 version 22H2 and later:
- Open Start → Settings → System → Projecting to this PC.
- Under Optional features, select View features.
- Search for wireless display.
- Select Wireless Display, choose Next, and select Install.
- Search the taskbar for wireless display, then open the Wireless Display app.
Older Windows versions may use the Connect app, but “install the Connect app” is not the current Windows 11 path for version 22H2 and later.
Connect to a Miracast display
- Turn on the Miracast-compatible television, adapter, or display.
- On the Windows PC, press Windows logo key + K.
- Select the target display from the connection panel.
- Follow any pairing prompt shown on the display.
For a Windows PC to receive a Miracast projection, Wi‑Fi must be enabled, the Wireless Display optional feature must be installed, and the Wireless Display app must be running. If the receiving PC does not appear, check all three conditions before troubleshooting anything else.
Can an iPhone or iPad AirPlay to Windows?
Not using Windows’ built-in features. An iPhone or iPad uses AirPlay, while Windows’ built-in wireless projection uses Miracast. The two protocols are different.
To mirror an iPhone or iPad to a Windows PC, you need a compatible AirPlay receiver application or external receiver hardware installed on or connected to the Windows side. The exact setup depends on the product. After it is running, the usual Apple-side process is:

- Connect the iPhone or iPad and the receiver to the appropriate network.
- Open Control Center on the iPhone or iPad.
- Tap AirPlay or Screen Mirroring.
- Select the receiver shown in the list.
Windows itself will not appear as an AirPlay destination merely because it is on the same Wi‑Fi network.
Troubleshoot AirPlay speakers missing from iTunes
If the AirPlay button is present but your speaker or Apple TV is missing, check the following:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Confirm the PC is online. The Windows PC must be connected to the wireless network.
- Check the receiver. Make sure the Apple TV, HomePod, AirPort Express, or network speaker is powered on, connected to Wi‑Fi, and not sleeping or inactive.
- Check the network. AirPlay discovery normally uses Bonjour multicast. Devices generally need to be on the same IP subnet. A guest network, client isolation, VLAN separation, or a router blocking multicast can prevent discovery even when both devices have internet access.
- Check enterprise network configuration. A managed network may need Bonjour gateway or service-advertisement support for
_airplay._tcpand_raop._tcp, along with working device discovery. - Check Apple TV pairing. Apple TV must be connected correctly and associated with the iTunes library being used.
- Check HomePod status. HomePod and HomePod mini must be powered on and connected to Wi‑Fi.
- Restart discovery. Close and reopen iTunes, then restart the receiver and, if necessary, the router.
Apple devices can sometimes use peer-to-peer AirPlay discovery through Bluetooth Low Energy and a temporary Wi‑Fi connection. That is an Apple-device capability and should not be assumed to work for a Windows sender or receiver.
Understand the icons in iTunes’ AirPlay menu
| Icon | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Speaker or TV with a lock | The device requires a password. |
| Exclamation point inside a triangle | The device has an error. |
| Exclamation point, triangle, and lock | The device was selected, but its password has not been entered. |
Check Apple TV security settings
Apple TV can require authentication before allowing an AirPlay connection. On the Apple TV, open:
Settings → AirPlay → Security → Require Device Verification

- Spotify & Internet Radio Ready — Stream from Spotify and support internet radio stations directly via the AudioCast app — great for playlists, talk shows and more.
- Multi-Room Music Playback — Group multiple AudioCast units to enjoy music in several rooms at once or play different audio on each speaker.
- Easy Setup + Wide Compatibility — Quick setup via the free AudioCast app; compatible with most Wi-Fi routers and speaker systems with AUX input (Power adapter not included).
When device verification is enabled, the source must authenticate during the initial AirPlay connection. If iTunes detects the Apple TV but cannot start playback, complete the requested verification or review this setting.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteOn Apple TV devices running tvOS 18 or later, AirPlay receivers no longer advertise their device ID or MAC address for the relevant discovery process. For the RequestMirror operation, the Apple TV’s device name is used instead. This is an internal protocol detail, not a command you type into Windows.
Remove and reconnect a Miracast display in Windows
If a Miracast display previously worked but now fails, remove its saved connection and pair it again:
- Open Settings → Bluetooth & devices → Devices.
- Find Wireless displays & docks.
- Select the display or adapter.
- Choose Remove device.
- Press Windows logo key + K and connect to it again.
This procedure applies to Windows’ wireless-display connections. It does not remove an AirPlay speaker from iTunes.

Is Windows logo key + K the AirPlay shortcut?
No. Windows logo key + K opens the Miracast wireless-display connection panel. It will not find an AirPlay-only Apple TV or television.
Can I AirPlay music from a Windows PC?
Yes. Apple documents AirPlay speaker output in iTunes for Windows. Open iTunes, click the AirPlay button, and select the checkbox beside the speaker, Apple TV, HomePod, or other supported device.
Why is my AirPlay speaker not listed in iTunes?
Check that the PC and receiver are connected to the network, the receiver is powered on, and both devices are normally on the same IP subnet. Guest networks, VLANs, client isolation, and multicast-blocking router settings can stop Bonjour AirPlay discovery.
Can I mirror an iPhone to a Windows laptop without installing anything?
Not with Windows’ native tools. Windows receives Miracast, whereas iPhone and iPad use AirPlay. You need a compatible AirPlay receiver application or hardware for the Windows side.
Why does Windows say an external display must be connected with a cable?
The PC may not support Miracast because of its wireless adapter, graphics hardware, or drivers. This message concerns Miracast capability and does not indicate a missing AirPlay setting.
The Bottom Line
For AirPlay audio, open iTunes for Windows, click its AirPlay button, and select the target speaker or Apple TV. For screen mirroring, Windows has no native AirPlay receiver: Windows logo key + K is Miracast, not AirPlay. Use a compatible AirPlay receiver solution for iPhone or iPad mirroring, or use Miracast when both Windows and the display support it.
