Use AI to challenge and extend your thinking, not to make your judgment for you. Before asking for an answer, form your own provisional view; then use AI to surface counterarguments and missing evidence, verify important claims against original sources, and explain your conclusion in your own words. This routine is a practical synthesis of current guidance and research—not a tested, guaranteed method.
Why the way you use AI matters
A fluent, well-organized answer can still contain errors, weak reasoning, or claims that its cited sources do not support. The key question is not simply whether AI is involved, but whether you remain engaged in evaluating evidence and making the judgment.
UNESCO’s 2023 guidance asks whether people might hand basic thinking and skill-acquisition processes to AI while concentrating on higher-order thinking. That is a policy and learning-design concern, not proof that every use of AI causes skill loss. Read UNESCO’s guidance.
The evidence does not support a simple rule that AI always improves critical thinking or always damages it. A 2026 scoping review of 29 empirical studies describes two possible paths: AI can reduce routine demands and leave more room for synthesis, or it can encourage superficial engagement and offloading. A practical routine for keeping your judgment in the loop

Make an attempt before you prompt
Write a provisional answer, outline, or list of assumptions first. For a decision, note what you currently believe and why. This gives you something to compare with the AI’s response instead of treating its first answer as your starting point.

Ask AI to add friction, not just finish the task
Ask for the strongest counterargument, another plausible explanation, missing information, or evidence that could disprove your view. You can also ask it to separate factual claims from assumptions. Use the response to widen the possibilities you consider—not to decide which one is true.

Check consequential claims at their source
Open the original article, report, study, law, or documentation behind an important claim. Confirm that the source exists, is suitable for the claim, and actually supports the wording. A citation in an AI answer is a lead to check, not proof that the source is real or relevant.

Make the inference yourself
State what the evidence shows, what it does not show, and why it supports your conclusion. If you can only repeat the AI’s phrasing, return to the source material and reconsider the reasoning.

Practice evaluating outputs
Ask AI to present two competing claims, then assess their evidence; correct a flawed argument; synthesize several sources; or appraise a generated answer for unsupported statements. These kinds of activities—debate, synthesis, proof correction, and claim appraisal—appear in the tasks discussed by the 2026 review. This practice is a useful application of its findings, not a proven formula for preventing skill loss.
Choose the right amount of AI help for the task
Before delegating a step, ask whether AI is removing routine effort or replacing the central thinking the task is meant to develop. Help with brainstorming or organizing notes may leave the key judgment to you; asking AI to decide what evidence means, then submitting its conclusion unchanged, does not.

For learning, try solving a problem or drafting an argument before requesting hints or critique. For research, use AI to generate questions or identify possible sources, then read and assess those sources yourself. For decisions, use it to lay out options and trade-offs, but set your own criteria and decide how much weight each consideration deserves.
Raise the verification bar when a mistake could have serious consequences. In higher-stakes situations, seek authoritative sources or qualified professional advice where appropriate; do not treat an AI response as a substitute for either.

A 2025 experiment followed 36 sophomore undergraduates in a specific STEM and entrepreneurship course for eight weeks, with three hours of work per week. The ChatGPT-assisted collaborative group had 21 students, and the non-ChatGPT comparison group had 15. The assisted group performed better on learning performance, AI awareness, and cognitive load; the comparison group performed better on critical thinking. A 2025 systematic review examined 19 documents covering higher-education publications from 2023 to 2024. It reported benefits for analysis and argument construction alongside concerns about over-reliance, self-reflection, academic integrity, and accuracy verification. The 2026 scoping review included 29 empirical studies, with a search covering November 2022 to January 2025. It found that critical-thinking tasks often involved error detection, credibility evaluation, and source verification, while describing both scaffolding and offloading patterns. The count describes the review’s scope, not a population-wide estimate of AI’s effects.

A quick check before you rely on an AI answer

Did I think first? Can I state my initial view or the question I am trying to resolve?

Did I look for what could change my mind? Have I considered a serious counterargument or alternative explanation?

Did I verify the important claims? Have I checked the original sources and confirmed they support the claims?

Does the task need stronger safeguards? If the consequences of error are substantial, have I sought appropriate authoritative or professional input?
